Sairee Beach is the spine of Koh Tao. 2km of sand with everything you need within walking distance. The main strip runs parallel to the beach and packs in dive shops, restaurants, 7-Elevens, pharmacies, and enough beach bars to fill a week without repeating yourself. You're 10 minutes walk from Mae Haad Pier, which keeps the ferry logistics painless.
Book somewhere mid-strip rather than the far north end, which gets hit hardest by the late-night bar noise from the Sairee area clubs. Sairee Cottage Resort and Koh Tao Cabana are both solid anchors right in the action but with enough buffer to actually sleep.
The truth about 'beachfront' in Koh Tao
Half the hotels claiming 'beachfront' on this island aren't. The Ban Tai stretch south of Sairee is the worst offender. there are properties 300 meters from the water calling themselves seaside. Always check the satellite view on Google Maps before booking, not just the listing photos.
True beachfront on Koh Tao means your room is within 50 meters of the sand, no road in between. Haad Tien Beach Resort actually delivers this at its private bay. Haad Tien is only accessible by boat, so the beach access is as real as it gets. For Sairee, the west-facing rooms at Koh Tao Cabana put you genuinely steps from the water.
Koh Tao for divers: where to base yourself
Mae Haad is the dive capital. Crystal Dive Resort sits right on the Mae Haad pier road. you roll out of bed and you're at the dive shop counter in under 3 minutes. For serious divers doing multiple courses, the convenience of being in Mae Haad is worth the slightly less glamorous surroundings.
If you're already certified and just want to do fun dives, Sairee Beach works just as well. Most dive schools operate pickup services from Sairee, and the Japanese Gardens off the north tip of the island and Chumphon Pinnacle. about 13km northwest. are both day-trip dives accessible from either base. Visibility peaks at 20-30 meters between March and May.
Koh Tao on a budget: what's actually possible
You can do Koh Tao on $45-75/night for a bed, but expect a fan room, shared bathroom in some cases, and very little beach proximity. Koh Tao Backpackers Hostel in Mae Haad is the most honest budget option. 3 minutes from the ferry, clean, social, and they don't pretend to be something they're not. Blue Wind Bungalows in Ban Tai adds a bit of character for slightly more.
The real budget trap is food, not hotels. The Mae Haad pier road restaurants will charge tourist prices. 200-350 THB for a plate. Walk 5 minutes inland toward the Ban Tai road junction and the same dish costs 80-120 THB at the local spots that don't bother with an English sign out front.
When to go. and when to stay home
March through May is the sweet spot. Visibility underwater is at its best, rain is minimal, and the island isn't yet at Christmas-level chaos. December and January are great but expect Sairee Beach to be packed and hotel prices to jump 30-40%. Book at least 6-8 weeks ahead if you're coming between December 20 and January 5.
October and November are genuinely risky. The Gulf of Thailand throws serious weather at the east coast and speedboat services from Koh Samui and Chumphon regularly get cancelled. We've seen people stranded on Koh Tao for 2-3 extra days in November waiting for conditions to clear. If you go, have flexible flights and consider travel insurance that covers sea transport delays.
Chalok Ban Kao: the underrated south
Chalok Ban Kao Bay is 20 minutes south of Sairee by songthaew and feels like a different island. The bay is sheltered and calm. the water stays flat even when the north of Koh Tao is choppy. and you've got a real shot at spotting hawksbill turtles near the rocks at the bay's eastern edge. Jamahkiri Resort and The Place Luxury Boutique Resort both sit up in the hills above the bay with views that Sairee flat-out can't match.
The tradeoff is isolation. There's a handful of restaurants around the bay, but nothing like the Sairee strip. That's the point for most people who choose it. If you're here for romance or quiet, Chalok Ban Kao is the answer. it's also about 15-20% cheaper than equivalent-quality rooms on Sairee Beach.

Sairee Beach is where the action is, full stop. The main strip runs almost 2km along the western coast and is lined with dive schools, beach bars, massage shops, and some of the best casual restaurants on the island. You're 10 minutes walk from Mae Haad Pier and the songthaew to Chalok Ban Kao leaves from the southern end of the beach.
The north end of Sairee gets noisy. the cluster of beach clubs around Lotus Bar doesn't quiet down until 2 or 3am most nights. Book mid-strip or south of mid-strip. Rooms here run $105-200/night for anything decent with a real bed and working air-con.
Sairee Cottage Resort and Koh Tao Cabana are our two picks here. Both sit in the heart of the strip with genuine beach access and none of the misleading 'beachfront' nonsense common elsewhere on the island.
