First timer's guide to Krabi
Start in Ao Nang. It's not the quietest spot in Krabi, but it's the most connected. longtail boats to Railay leave from the northern end of Ao Nang Beach Road every 15 minutes, and every tour operator on the strip can book you onto a Four Islands day trip for $25-35. Give yourself 2 nights here to get your bearings.
On day 3, take the longtail to Railay and spend the morning at Phra Nang Cave Beach before the day-trippers arrive. Get there before 9am. The cave itself is a 10-minute walk from Railay East pier through a jungle path, and it's one of the genuinely stunning spots in Southeast Asia. If you're staying longer than 5 days, consider a night or two in Krabi Town. the riverside at Thanon Khong Kha is a different pace entirely.
Ao Nang vs Klong Muang: which should you choose?
Ao Nang is louder, cheaper, and better connected. Hotels run $45-200/night, restaurants are everywhere on Ao Nang Beach Road, and you're 15 minutes by longtail from Railay. It suits solo travelers, families, and anyone who likes having options within walking distance. The trade-off is noise. the strip gets busy until midnight.
Klong Muang is 25 minutes north on Route 4034 and feels like a different destination. The beach here is longer and less crowded, the resorts start at $170/night and cap out at $1,500, and you'll need wheels to get anywhere. It's worth it for couples on a splurge or anyone who needs actual quiet. We'd pick Klong Muang for 4 nights or more. any shorter and you'll spend half your trip in a taxi.
Getting around Krabi without getting ripped off
Songthaews (shared pickup trucks) run between Krabi Town's Maharat Road and Ao Nang for about $1.50. They're slow and stop running around 6pm, but for daytime moves they're unbeatable. Taxis from Ao Nang to Klong Muang should cost $8-12. agree on the price before you get in, because meters are rare outside Krabi Town.
Longtail boats from Ao Nang pier to Railay cost around $3 per person during the day and $5-6 after dark. The boats only leave when full, usually 6-8 people. Don't let anyone quote you a private charter price of $30+ for a 15-minute crossing unless you genuinely want the boat to yourself. Scooter rental near the Ao Nang roundabout runs $8-12/day and is the smartest option for exploring the back roads around Nopparat Thara.
When to book (and when to wait)
Book by October for December-January travel. That stretch, especially the week between Christmas and New Year, is when Railay and Ao Nang Cliff resorts sell out completely. Rates at Aonang Cliff Beach Resort go from $120 in May to $200+ in late December. If you're flexible, late January and February offer near-identical weather with 15-25% lower rates than the Christmas peak.
March and April are underrated. Temps hit 33-35°C but the sea stays clear, Phi Phi day trips still run daily, and hotels in Klong Muang drop back to shoulder pricing. Avoid booking Klong Muang or Railay for the Thai New Year (Songkran, April 13-15) unless you enjoy water fights on a longtail boat. It's fun, but prices spike and everything books out a month in advance.
How to find the right room (not just the right hotel)
In Ao Nang, room position matters more than most people realise. At Aonang Cliff Beach Resort, the cliff-facing rooms above floor 3 have unobstructed views of the Andaman. rooms on the road side face a car park. At Holiday Inn Ao Nang Center, pool-access rooms are worth the $20-30 premium if you're traveling with kids. Always request high floor, sea side, in writing when booking.
For Railay hotels, ask specifically whether the room faces Railay East or Railay West. Railay East is the functional side: longtail pier, restaurants, mangrove views. Railay West faces the actual beach, the limestone cliffs, the postcard. It's an 8-minute walk between the two sides, but the room price difference can be $50-80/night. Know which one you're paying for.
Krabi for couples: where to actually stay
Skip the Ao Nang strip if romance is the goal. It's great for convenience but not exactly candlelit. Head to Railay Beach Club on Railay East for direct access to arguably the most dramatic beach scenery in Thailand at $135-210/night. Or go further north to Nakamanda Resort on Klong Muang Beach: private pool villas, a quiet stretch of sand, and a spa that doesn't feel like a tourist conveyor belt.
If budget is no concern, Phulay Bay at Klong Muang Bay is one of the best resort experiences in Southeast Asia. Rates start at $600/night, but the pavilion villas with private infinity pools over the Andaman are genuinely worth it for a honeymoon or anniversary. Book the Romantic Dinner on the beach when you arrive. it sells out 3-4 days in advance, and the team at Phulay Bay are excellent at quiet, fuss-free service.

The beach itself is decent. not spectacular. but it's the launchpad for Railay, Phi Phi, and the Four Islands, which is the real reason to be here.
