Queen's Park Savannah is your anchor. It's the largest roundabout in the world, surrounded by the Magnificent Seven mansions on the western edge, and it tells you everything about how this city is laid out. Stay within 15 minutes walk of the Savannah and you'll have the city figured out by day two.
Don't book anything on the southern end of Wrightson Road unless you specifically need the waterfront for ferry or cruise connections. The area around South Quay looks convenient on a map but it's noisy, not particularly walkable at night, and you'll constantly be grabbing taxis to get anywhere interesting. Pay a little more and stay in St. Ann's or Maraval.

Budget means $55-99/night here. That gets you the Hyatt Regency on Wrightson Road or the Sundeck Suites in St. Ann's. Both are clean and functional. Neither is going to surprise you with a rooftop pool, but you won't be disappointed either. Mid-range runs $110-220/night and that's where most travelers should land.
Luxury in Port of Spain peaks at The Brix on Nook Avenue in St. Ann's. At $290-420/night it's the best hotel in the country, full stop. If you can stretch to it, the difference in quality between The Brix and the next tier down is noticeable from the moment you arrive. Don't apologize for spending properly on accommodation in a city where your hotel neighborhood genuinely affects your experience.
When to visit Port of Spain (and when to avoid it).
January to May is peak season. Carnival hits in February or March and the city transforms completely. Bands parade through the streets around the Savannah, Ariapita Avenue fills with fetes every night, and the energy is unlike anything else in the Caribbean. Book 6-9 months ahead if you want Carnival dates. Hotel prices triple.
June through November is the wet season. Rates drop significantly and you'll often have places to yourself. Afternoons bring rain, but mornings are usually clear. It's actually a great time to visit Asa Wright Nature Centre in the Northern Range, about 40 minutes from the city. Serious birdwatchers prefer this window.
St. Ann's vs. Maraval: which neighborhood should you pick?
Both neighborhoods sit north of the Savannah and both are safer and greener than downtown. St. Ann's has the edge on accommodation quality. The Brix, The Chancellor, and the Sundeck Suites are all here. You're also 8 minutes walk from the Savannah and close to the restaurants on Rust Street and Ellerslie Plaza.
Maraval is quieter and a touch more residential. The Kapok Hotel on Cotton Hill is the standout there. If you're renting a car and doing day trips to Maracas Beach via the North Coast Road, Maraval actually puts you 5 minutes closer to the highway. St. Ann's wins on walkability. Maraval wins if you're driving.
Getting around Port of Spain without getting ripped off.
Taxis don't use meters. Agree on the fare before you get in. A ride from St. Ann's to Independence Square should cost TTD 40-60 (about $6-9). From the Hilton on Lady Young Road to the city centre is roughly the same. If a driver quotes you TTD 150 for that trip, walk away. We've seen this mistake hundreds of times.
Maxi taxis are the local bus system and they're color-coded by route. Yellow-band maxis cover Port of Spain to the east. They stop along the Priority Bus Route and cost TTD 4-8. It's chaotic if you don't know the system, but it's cheap and fast once you get it. Ask your hotel front desk to point you to the nearest stop.
What to eat near your hotel in Port of Spain.
Ariapita Avenue in Woodbrook is the main restaurant strip. It's about 15 minutes walk from St. Ann's or a short taxi from most central hotels. Chaud Cafe, Veni Mangé on Lucknow Street, and Jaffa at the Oval are all within this corridor. Don't eat at your hotel every night when this street exists.
For breakfast, find a doubles vendor. Every neighborhood has one. The stand near the Savannah's north side opens early and the doubles with pepper sauce cost TTD 6-10 each. It's the most honest food in the city and you'll regret spending $25 on eggs at the hotel buffet instead.

The Brix, The Chancellor, and the Sundeck Suites are all here within a few blocks of each other. You're 8-10 minutes walk from the Savannah's northern edge and close to the restaurants along Ellerslie Plaza.
Nook Avenue specifically is where the luxury sits. The Brix transformed what a Port of Spain hotel could be, and the street has a calm, residential feel that makes $290-420/night feel earned rather than extravagant. It's also convenient for the Queen's Hall arts venue, just 5 minutes away on foot.
If you want atmosphere without the city-centre grind, this is your neighborhood. Avoid the blocks closer to the Eastern Main Road, which gets noisy with traffic. Stick to the upper St. Ann's area near Perseverance Road and you're in the best pocket of the city.
