Alsancak vs. Konak: Which side of Izmir should you stay on?
Alsancak is Izmir's pulse. The Kordon seafront promenade, the restaurant-packed 1453 Sokak, the bars on Kıbrıs Şehitleri Caddesi. it's all walkable and alive until well past midnight. Hotels here cost more, but you pay for location, not prestige.
Konak is quieter and cheaper, with the Clock Tower and Kemeraltı bazaar on your doorstep. But it shuts down earlier and the streets around Anafartalar Caddesi get chaotic during market hours. Our take: stay in Alsancak, visit Konak as a day trip.
How to pick a hotel in Izmir without getting burned
We've seen this mistake hundreds of times. Travelers book based on price and end up in Bayraklı or Bornova. technically Izmir, but 25 minutes from everything worth seeing. Always check the exact address against the Kordon or Konak Square, not just the city label.
Check the noise situation too. Hotels near Basmane station deal with freight trains from 5am. Anything on the Kordon side of Alsancak gets bar noise until 2am in summer. Neither is wrong. it depends on you. But know before you book.
Izmir in summer: what no one tells you
July and August in Izmir hit 35-38°C regularly, and the Aegean humidity makes it feel worse. Air conditioning is non-negotiable, not a nice-to-have. Some budget hotels in Konak and Kemeraltı still run old wall units that barely cope. always confirm the AC spec before booking.
The upside of summer: Kordon is electric at night, ferry connections to Çeşme and beyond run multiple times daily, and the rooftop bars at places like Swissôtel Grand Efes are genuinely spectacular. Go for the evenings and mornings. Midday is for the pool.
The short guide to getting around Izmir
The Metro line runs from Üçyol through the city center and out to Bornova. useful if you're based in Alsancak or Konak. The Izban suburban rail is what you want for airport transfers and day trips to Selçuk for Ephesus. A standard HesapKart journey costs under 20 TL.
Taxis are metered but drivers near Konak Meydanı sometimes 'forget' to start the meter for tourists. Agree on the price or watch the meter get turned on before you move. Ride apps like BiTaksi work well and are more transparent on price.
Where to eat near your hotel in Izmir
Don't eat at the hotel restaurant your first night. Head to Kordon for midye dolma (stuffed mussels) from the street vendors. they're a local ritual and they're excellent. For a proper sit-down, the meyhanes on 1453 Sokak in Alsancak serve raki and meze until late.
Kemeraltı has the best cheap eats in the city. The boyoz pastry shops near the bazaar entrance on Anafartalar Caddesi open at 6am and sell out by 9. If you're staying in Konak or Basmane, that's your breakfast sorted for under 30 TL.

The business district is centered around Bayraklı and Mavişehir, north of the old city.
