The biggest mistake first-timers make is booking on Atatürk Caddesi thinking they're central. You are. but central here means noise, touts, and restaurants that know you'll never come back. The real Marmaris is a 10-minute walk toward the castle district and the old harbor.
Marmaris Castle sits above the old bazaar quarter in Kaleiçi and it's genuinely worth the 10 TL entry. Walk down through the bazaar, turn right onto Tepe Mahallesi, and you hit the quieter marina-facing cafes where locals actually eat. That's your orientation sorted.

Marmaris central beach along the Uzunyali promenade is fine, but it gets packed by 10am in July. The water is clean enough, the sunbeds run about $8-12 for two, and it's flat and easy. But if you want something better, Icmeler Beach is 20 minutes west by dolmuş and noticeably less crowded.
Turunc Bay, another 15 minutes south of Icmeler by boat taxi, is where the water gets genuinely clear. Boats leave from Icmeler harbour from about 9am and the return fare is around $5. It's a narrow shingle beach but worth it, especially on weekdays.
How to get around Marmaris without overpaying.
Dolmuş minibuses are your best friend here. The Marmaris-Icmeler route runs constantly from the main dolmuş stop near the bus station on Mustafa Münir Elgin Bulvarı and costs under $1. Taxis between the same two points cost $8-12, which adds up fast over a week.
For day trips, boats to Dalyan leave from the Marmaris marina in the morning and cost around $20-25 including the Iztuzu beach visit. Renting a scooter near the Netsel Marina is about $25-35/day and gives you access to viewpoints above Armutalan that no tour bus reaches.
Where to eat without getting ripped off.
The restaurants on the front strip near Bar Street are for tourists who won't be back. Walk two blocks inland from the marina toward Tepe Mahallesi and prices drop 30-40% immediately. Look for the places with Turkish-language menus chalked outside. that's always a good sign.
In Icmeler, the seafood places along Icmeler Caddesi toward the eastern end of the beach are legitimately good. Expect $15-25 for a full fish meal with meze and a beer. Avoid anywhere with a laminated photo menu and a guy standing outside waving at you.
The Marmaris sailing scene, explained.
Marmaris is the starting point for the famous Blue Voyage (Mavi Yolculuk) routes through the Gökova Gulf. Charter companies cluster around the Netsel Marina, which is a 5-minute walk from the castle. A gulet for 8 people runs $1,200-2,000 per week in May, and nearly double that in August.
If you just want a day on the water, boat tours leave daily from the harbor near Barbaros Caddesi and visit spots like Phosphorescent Cave, Nimara Cave, and Cennet Adası. They run about $15-20 per person including a basic lunch. Book the night before. don't pay the premium for same-morning tickets on the dock.
Marmaris day trips worth the effort.
Dalyan is the one everyone mentions and it earns it. The Lycian rock tombs above the river, the Iztuzu beach where Caretta caretta turtles nest, and the mud baths at Sultaniye hot springs are all within a 90-minute boat trip. Get there early: tours from Marmaris marina start at 8:30am and the best boats fill up.
Datça Peninsula is less visited and more rewarding for the curious. The drive along the D400 road takes about 75 minutes but the scenery is exceptional. Knidos at the tip has Hellenistic ruins right on the water and almost no crowds even in July.

Icmeler sits 8 km west of central Marmaris and it's consistently where we send people who want a proper holiday rather than a party holiday. The beach here is narrower than Uzunyali but the water is calmer and the vibe is noticeably more relaxed. Dolmuş connections back to Marmaris run every 15 minutes, so you're not giving anything up.
The hotel quality in Icmeler generally punches above its price point.
