Buhoma: The easiest sector to base yourself
Buhoma is where most first-time Bwindi visitors land, and honestly, that's the right call. The Buhoma UWA Gate sits right in the village, and you can walk from most lodges along the main forest track in under 15 minutes. Hotels here span the full range, from $45/night community camps in Buhoma Village to $600/night tented suites in the Buhoma Forest Interior.
The Buhoma Trading Centre has a few local food stalls and a basic shop where you can grab snacks and water before your trek. Don't rely on it for anything substantial. The smarter move is to book full-board at your lodge and focus on being rested for the 8am start at the gate.
Gorilla permits: Book these before your hotel
Uganda gorilla permits cost $800 per person, booked through Uganda Wildlife Authority. They assign you to a specific sector. Only after you know your sector should you book accommodation. We've seen people do this backwards and end up paying for a 3-hour transfer on trek morning because their lodge was in the wrong sector.
Peak permit slots for June, July, and August disappear 4-6 months out. The lodges nearest to each UWA gate fill up right behind the permits. Mahogany Springs Safari Lodge near the Buhoma Sector and Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge in the Nkuringo Sector both get booked solid for peak season well before Christmas of the prior year.
What to expect from a Bwindi gorilla trek
Treks start at 8am at your sector's UWA gate. Bring rain gear regardless of forecast. The Bwindi Impenetrable Forest earns that name: dense undergrowth, steep terrain, and trails that can take anywhere from 1 to 8 hours depending on where the gorilla family has moved. Ruhija sector treks at 2,350m elevation are particularly demanding.
You get exactly one hour with the gorilla family once your ranger finds them. It goes fast. Stay 7 metres back, no flash photography, and do what the guide says immediately. Rangers at Buhoma Gate are experienced and genuinely good at managing nervous first-timers.
How to pick between the four sectors
Buhoma has the most hotel choice and the best infrastructure, good for first-timers. Ruhija is highest elevation and most remote, best for birders and serious hikers who want fewer tourists. Rushaga in the south has access to multiple gorilla families and two solid mid-range lodges. Nkuringo has the most dramatic scenery, perched above the Munyaga River Valley, and Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge there is the top-rated property in our entire list at 8.7.
Don't pick a sector because you prefer the look of the hotel. Pick it based on permit availability, then find the best hotel in that sector from our list. That's the only way to do this trip without regret.
Budget travel in Bwindi: What's realistic
The gorilla permit is $800 no matter what. That's fixed. So budget travel in Bwindi means managing everything else: accommodation, food, and transport. Buhoma Community Rest Camp at $45-70/night is the real floor for a decent bed near Buhoma Village. Ride 4 A Woman Guesthouse at $60-90/night in Buhoma Trading Centre is worth the extra few dollars, especially for solo female travelers.
Eat at your lodge. Local options near the forest are limited and not necessarily cheaper once you factor in the taxi to get there. A shared minibus from Kabale to Buhoma costs around $5-8 per person but runs infrequently. Hiring a boda-boda motorcycle from Buhoma Trading Centre for day trips runs about $3-6 depending on distance.
Romantic stays: Bwindi for couples
Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge in the Rushaga Highlands earns its Romantic Stay badge. At $200-260/night, the setting above the forest canopy is genuinely dramatic and the lodge is small enough to feel private. It's about 20 minutes from the Rushaga UWA Gate, which is manageable on trek morning.
Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp in the Buhoma Forest Interior is the real honeymoon option if budget allows. At $350-600/night you're inside the park boundary, and waking up to forest sounds before a gorilla trek is an experience that justifies the price. Book the forest-facing tent, not the garden-side units.

Buhoma is where most visitors start and it's the strongest all-round base. The Buhoma UWA Gate sits at the edge of the village, and the main forest track running through Buhoma Village to the forest edge is walkable from most lodges. You've got everything from a $45/night community rest camp to a $600/night tented suite in the Buhoma Forest Interior within a 10-minute drive.
Buhoma Trading Centre is the commercial spine: a few food stalls, a small shop, and the Ride 4 A Woman Guesthouse right in the middle of it all. Don't expect much from the stalls. Stock up on snacks before arriving from Kabale. The road into Buhoma from the Kihihi direction is unpaved but passable year-round with a 4WD.
Avoid booking anything that advertises a 'Buhoma location' without specifying which part. Buhoma Village, Buhoma Trading Centre, Buhoma Sector, and Buhoma Forest Interior are all meaningfully different. The forest interior properties are 20-30 minutes' walk from the gate. The village properties are closer to 8-12 minutes.

Getting to Nkuringo takes commitment. From Kampala, plan on 10-12 hours depending on road conditions. The final stretch from Kisoro is unpaved and requires a 4WD. But the Nkuringo UWA Gate is right there, and the sector's gorilla families are well-habituated with consistently good sightings reported by rangers.
The Ivy River viewpoint near the lodge is worth visiting on arrival day if your schedule allows. And book dinner at the lodge for your arrival night. There's nothing else within reach after dark.
