West Maui vs. South Maui: Which side should you book?
West Maui means Kaanapali, Napili, and Kapalua. You get the famous 3-mile Kaanapali Beach Walk, direct sunset views over the ocean, and Lahaina's Front Street about 10 minutes south. The energy is lively. sometimes too lively. Whalers Village fills up on weekends and you'll share the sand with hundreds.
South Maui means Wailea and Makena. The beaches are arguably better, the water calmer, and the vibe more polished. Wailea Alanui Drive connects the resort strip without you ever needing to fight traffic. If you want a quieter base with top-tier restaurants within walking distance, South Maui wins.
The Road to Hana: Don't make the classic mistake
Most visitors drive the Road to Hana as a day trip from Kaanapali. It's 65 miles with 620 curves, 59 bridges, and dozens of stops worth making. twin falls at Wailua, bamboo forest at Pipiwai Trail, black sand at Wai'anapanapa State Park. Trying to do it in a day means you rush everything and arrive back at your hotel wrecked by 9pm.
Stay at Travaasa Hana at least one night. Wake up at 6am and drive 10 minutes to Hamoa Beach before the tour buses arrive. The Seven Sacred Pools at Ohe'o Gulch are genuinely magical without a crowd. Book the Hana-side return (the back road via Ulupalakua) to loop the whole island in two days. it's rougher but stunning.
Haleakalā summit: What nobody tells you about the sunrise
The Haleakalā summit sits at 3,055 meters. It's cold up there. sometimes 2-5°C at sunrise, even when it's 30°C at the beach below. Reservations for sunrise are required through the National Park Service and sell out weeks in advance, especially December through March.
If you're staying in Wailea, you're looking at a 1.5-hour drive up Haleakalā Highway before your 5am arrival slot. Staying in Kula or Upcountry cuts that to under an hour. The Four Seasons can arrange private sunrise van tours with gear. Budget travelers: pack layers the night before or the summit wind will ruin your morning.
Maui's best snorkeling: Where to actually go
Molokini Crater is the most famous snorkel spot and worth every cent. Boat tours leave from Maalaea Harbor most mornings at 7am and run $90-130/person. Get on the earliest boat. by 10am, the crater fills with three tour operators and 200 people. From Wailea, Maalaea is 15 minutes north on Pi'ilani Highway.
If you want to skip the boat, Kapalua Bay and Napili Bay both have excellent reef snorkeling right off the beach. Kapalua consistently ranks among the clearest water on the west side. Rent gear in Lahaina for $10-15/day and drive 20 minutes north on Honoapiilani Highway.
Getting around Maui: What actually works
Rent a car. Seriously. The Maui Bus has 13 routes covering Kahului, Wailuku, Kihei, and Lahaina, but the frequency is 1-2 buses per hour and the last routes wrap up around 10pm. Rideshares exist but surge during peak beach hours and can cost $40-60 from Wailea to Lahaina. A rental for $65-90/day gives you total freedom.
Book your rental car before you land, especially for travel in June-August and December-January. Kahului Airport rental lots sell out and last-minute rates jump to $150-200/day. Jeep and convertible rentals on Dairy Road in Kahului go fast. If you're staying at a Wailea resort, ask about complimentary shuttle service to the beach clubs. some hotels offer it.
Maui hotel prices by season: When to book what
Peak season runs mid-December through March. that's when mainland US and Canada escape winter and Maui fills up. Kaanapali Beach Hotel goes from around $200/night in October to $320 in January. The Four Seasons climbs past $1,200/night during the holidays. Book 3-6 months out for anything in Wailea or Kaanapali during those months.
The genuine sweet spot is late April through early June. Whale watching season (December-May) is mostly over, school's still in session, and you'll find Napili Surf Beach Resort at $175-200/night instead of $280. September and October are even cheaper and the weather holds. Avoid booking the week of the Maui Film Festival in June without expecting a $50-80/night premium near Wailea.
