Erakor Lagoon: Port Vila's resort heartland
Erakor Lagoon is where most visitors end up, and for good reason. The water is calm, the setting is genuinely tropical, and you're still only 10-15 minutes by minibus from the Port Vila Market on Lini Highway. Hotels here range from the family-friendly Ramada Resort to the seriously impressive Holiday Inn Resort Vanuatu, which sits right on the lagoon edge.
One thing people miss: the lagoon-side restaurants at Warwick Le Lagon are open to non-guests for dinner. Worth knowing if you're staying somewhere cheaper nearby and want a special-occasion meal without the resort room rate.
Town Centre and Nambatu: budget stays done right
Town Centre gets a bad rap, but it works perfectly if you're spending most of your time exploring rather than lounging at a pool. Melanesian Hotel on Kumul Highway is walkable to everything: the market, the ANZ Bank, the bus terminal, and the restaurants along Lini Highway. Expect street noise, especially on weekends.
Nambatu is quieter and a genuine cut above Town Centre in feel, without jumping to resort prices. Vila Chaumières sits here with a garden atmosphere that genuinely surprises people. It's about a 12-minute walk to the Seafront, which is fine in the evenings when the heat drops.
The Seafront strip: best location, honest trade-offs
The Seafront along Kumul Highway and the Lini Highway waterfront is Port Vila's most walkable hotel zone. Mangoes Resort sits right here, and Crowne Plaza Vanuatu is a 5-minute walk along the same strip. You're steps from the best restaurants, the ferry dock for Iririki Island, and the evening market stalls.
The trade-off: it's busier and louder than Erakor. And the 'waterfront' here is the inner harbour, not a beach or lagoon. Great for business travellers and people who hate taxis. Less great if you came to Port Vila specifically to swim from your hotel.
Iririki Island: Port Vila's most exclusive address
Iririki Island Resort and Spa sits on its own private island just 3 minutes by free ferry from the Seafront. That short crossing completely changes the atmosphere: no road noise, no street traffic, just 68 hectares of tropical gardens and two beaches. At $295-450/night it's Port Vila's priciest stay, but it genuinely earns it.
The insider move here is to book a Bungalow category room rather than the standard villas. They're set back in the garden but cost $40-60 less per night and have more privacy than the waterfront units, which face the ferry dock.
When to book and what to expect at each price level
Book at least 6-8 weeks out for July and August stays. That's when Australian and New Zealand school holidays overlap with Vanuatu's dry season, and Erakor Lagoon resorts genuinely fill up. The $130-220/night mid-range bracket sells out fastest because it hits the sweet spot for most family and couple travellers.
The wet season from December through March looks cheap on paper, $55-160/night across most properties, but build in flexibility. Cyclone season peaks in February and March, and a cancelled day trip to Mele Cascades or Hideaway Island can derail a short trip fast. Travel insurance is not optional here.
What Port Vila hotels won't tell you
Several 'lagoon view' listings around Erakor are actually garden-view rooms where you can glimpse water from the balcony if you lean far enough. We've seen this pattern on at least 4 hotels we cut from our list. Always check the exact room category, not just the hotel name.
Resort fees are becoming more common on the Seafront and at Erakor properties. Some add 5-10% on top of the advertised rate for Wi-Fi, towels, and shuttle services. The hotels in our vetted list are upfront about pricing, but double-check your booking confirmation before you arrive at Bauerfield International Airport.

Erakor Lagoon is Port Vila's resort corridor and the most popular zone by a wide margin. The lagoon itself is sheltered and shallow in places, perfect for families and snorkellers. Most properties here have direct water access, and the quality gap between a $130 room and a $200 room is very real.
Getting into town from Erakor is easy. Minibuses run along the main road toward Lini Highway for 150-200 VT, and most resorts run a complimentary shuttle once or twice daily. The ride takes 10-15 minutes. Don't rely on walking at midday in January. the humidity is serious.
