My Khe Beach: The main event
My Khe Beach runs 10km along the east side of Da Nang. Forbes once named it one of the most attractive beaches on the planet. The sand is white, the water is warm from April through September, and the sunrises are worth the early alarm. Most beachfront hotels sit on Vo Nguyen Giap Street.
Pullman Beach and A La Carte are the best positioned, with direct beach access and pools facing the ocean. Novotel Han River and Wink Hotel are one block back but cost 20-30% less. The beach is free and never feels crowded outside of Vietnamese holidays (April 30 and September 2).
The southern end near Marble Mountains is quieter but under construction with new resort developments. The central section between Dragon Bridge and Thuan Phuoc Bridge is the sweet spot. Surfing is decent from September through March with 1-2 meter waves.
Han River District: City side convenience
The west bank of the Han River is Da Nang city proper. Bach Dang Street runs along the river with restaurants, cafes, and the best night views of Dragon Bridge. The Han Market is a 5-minute walk for local goods. Con Market has better food stalls.
Hotels here cost 15-25% less than beachfront. Ibis Styles and Mercure Bana Hills are on this side. You are 10 minutes by motorbike to My Khe Beach. The trade-off: no ocean view, no beach access at your doorstep. But you get better restaurants and nightlife.
If you are only in Da Nang for 1-2 nights as a transit stop between Hue and Hoi An, stay on the river side. You save money and have quicker access to the train station and airport. The beach-side hotels make sense for 3+ night stays.
Son Tra Peninsula: Luxury in seclusion
Son Tra Peninsula juts out north of the city with dense jungle, winding roads, and two of the most exclusive resorts in Vietnam. InterContinental Sun Peninsula sits on the hillside with a funicular between levels. Room rates start at $420 but include a private beach and world-class dining.
The peninsula is also home to the Linh Ung Pagoda with a 67-meter Lady Buddha statue visible from the beach. The drive up takes 30 minutes and the views of the coastline are spectacular. Bring a motorbike, not a car, for the narrow mountain roads.
This area is for couples on a honeymoon budget or anyone who wants complete seclusion. You are 20-30 minutes from the city center. There are no restaurants, convenience stores, or nightlife nearby. The resort is your world. Make peace with that before booking.
Marble Mountains and Non Nuoc Beach
Five limestone karst mountains rise from the flat coastal plain 8km south of the city center. Each represents a natural element: water, wood, fire, metal, earth. Thuy Son (Water Mountain) is the most visited with caves, pagodas, and panoramic views from the summit. Entry is 40,000 VND plus 15,000 VND for the elevator.
Non Nuoc Beach stretches south from the mountains. It is less developed than My Khe with wider spaces between resorts. The area is popular with Korean and Chinese tour groups. Hotels here are resort-style only, no budget options.
Visit the Marble Mountains as a half-day trip from My Khe Beach, not as your base. The area lacks restaurants and nightlife. A Grab from My Khe costs 50,000 VND. Go early morning (before 9am) to avoid tour bus crowds at the cave entrances.
Budget Da Nang: Beach city on a backpacker budget
Da Nang is one of the cheapest beach cities in Southeast Asia. Hangout Hostel near My Khe has dorms from $8 and private rooms from $45. Ibis Styles on the river side starts at $75 with breakfast included. You can stay near the beach in a real hotel for less than a hostel in Bali.
Street food here is even cheaper than Hanoi. Mi Quang costs 35,000-50,000 VND. Banh mi is 20,000-30,000 VND. Seafood dinners at local restaurants on Hoang Sa cost 100,000-200,000 VND per person for grilled fish, prawns, and clams. Bia Larue (local beer) is 12,000 VND.
Motorbike rental (100,000-150,000 VND/day) replaces the need for taxis. Da Nang is flat and easy to navigate. My Khe Beach to Marble Mountains is a 15-minute ride. The airport to anywhere in the city is under 20 minutes. You do not need organized tours here.
Da Nang as a base for central Vietnam
Da Nang is the transport hub for central Vietnam. Hoi An is 30 minutes south (150,000 VND by Grab). Hue is 2 hours north by train (100,000 VND) or the spectacular Hai Van Pass by motorbike (2 hours, free). Ba Na Hills is 40 minutes west by car.
