Nha Trang Beach Guide: Where to Set Up
The 7km Nha Trang beach is not created equal. The best section runs from the Sailing Club (72 Tran Phu) south to the Sheraton at 26-28 Tran Phu. Sand is cleanest, water is calmest, and lifeguards are stationed every 300 meters. Sunbeds at beachfront cafes cost 50,000-100,000 VND with a drink purchase.
The stretch north of Hon Chong promontory has rougher waves and fewer services. Good for a quiet walk but not ideal for swimming. The far south near Bai Dai beach (30km from center) has the whitest sand and fewest people, but you need transport to get there.
Sunrise at 5:30am is the magic hour. Local joggers, tai chi groups, and fishermen pulling nets. By 9am the beach chairs and tour boats take over. Sunset happens behind the mountains, so the evening light is golden on the water from about 4:30pm. Bring reef-safe sunscreen: the coral at Hon Mun is worth protecting.
Diving Nha Trang: A Complete Guide
Hon Mun Marine Reserve is the centerpiece, with 350+ coral species and visibility up to 25 meters from March through August. The reserve entrance fee (150,000 VND) is included in most dive packages. Top sites: Moray Garden (moray eels, clownfish, 12-18m depth), Madonna Rock (soft corals, barracuda schools, 18-25m), and Coral Garden (shallow, perfect for beginners, 6-12m).
A 2-dive day trip costs $60-80 with reputable operators. Sailing Club Divers on Tran Phu has PADI 5-star rating and English-speaking instructors. Rainbow Divers has been operating since 1996. Avoid the $25 snorkel-and-dive combo tours that pack 40 people on a boat. PADI Open Water certification runs $350-400 over 3-4 days.
Visibility drops significantly from October to January (monsoon season, 3-8 meters). If diving is your main reason for visiting, come between March and August. July and August have the warmest water (28-30 degrees) but also the most dive boats. April and May are the quiet sweet spot.
Beyond the Beach: Culture and History
Po Nagar Cham Towers sit on a hill north of the Cai River, built between the 7th and 12th centuries. Entry costs 22,000 VND. The main tower dedicated to the goddess Yan Po Nagar stands 23 meters tall. Visit before 9am to avoid tour groups. The views over the river and fishing boats are worth the climb alone.
Long Son Pagoda on Thai Nguyen street is free to enter. Climb 152 steps to reach the 24-meter white Buddha sitting cross-legged atop the hill. The panoramic view of Nha Trang from here beats anything you will see from a hotel balcony. Go in the late afternoon for the best light.
The Alexandre Yersin Museum on Tran Phu (28,000 VND) tells the story of the Swiss-French bacteriologist who discovered the plague bacillus and made Nha Trang his home. Small but fascinating. Takes 30 minutes. The Oceanographic Institute next door (40,000 VND) has a aquarium and preserved marine specimens from the 1920s.
Nha Trang Street Food Map
Start at Quan 67 on Le Loi for bun cha ca (fish cake noodles), the signature Nha Trang dish at 35,000 VND. The broth is light, the fish cakes are fresh, and the jellyfish garnish is uniquely local. Open 6am to 2pm only.
Vu Nhu on Hai Thang Tu street does the best nem nuong (grilled pork sausage) in the city. A set with rice paper, herbs, and dipping sauce costs 60,000 VND for two. Banh canh cha ca (thick noodle fish cake soup) at Cho Dam market stalls runs 30,000 VND. The seafood market on Phan Boi Chau operates from 4pm: pick your catch, pay by kilo, grill station cooks it for 20,000 VND.
Skip the tourist restaurants on Biet Thu street. Prices are 3-4x local rates for worse food. Louisiane Brewhouse on Tran Phu is the one exception on the tourist strip: good pizza (150,000 VND), beachfront seating, and a pool you can use with any food order.
Nha Trang with Kids: Family Itinerary
Vinpearl Land on Hon Tre island is the obvious kid draw. The 3,320-meter cable car across the bay is impressive (entry 880,000 VND adults, 700,000 VND kids includes all rides). But spend maximum half a day: the rides are average and food is overpriced. The aquarium and water park sections are the highlights.
Better family options: the beach itself (free, lifeguarded), boat trips to Hon Mun for snorkeling ($15-20 per person including lunch), and the mud baths at Thap Ba Hot Springs (250,000-400,000 VND per person, 2km from Po Nagar). Kids love the mud pools and waterslides.
Stay in the central Tran Phu section between the Novotel and Sheraton where sidewalks are widest and traffic is manageable. Both hotels have family rooms and pools. Avoid the backpacker area around Biet Thu: noisy bars until 2am and narrow streets with motorbike traffic.
