Long Beach: Finding the Right Section
Long Beach stretches 20km down the west coast but quality varies wildly. The best section sits between Duong Dong town (north) and the Intercontinental (south), roughly a 5km stretch. Sand is golden, water is calm, and you can walk to restaurants and the Night Market.
North Long Beach (near Vinpearl and Grand World) has construction cranes, murky water from runoff, and a theme park atmosphere. South Long Beach past the Intercontinental gets quieter but more isolated. The trade-off is real: beach quality improves as restaurant access decreases.
For sunsets, anywhere on Long Beach works since it faces west. But the stretch near La Veranda and Mango Bay has the least light pollution and the widest sand. Beach bars serve drinks from 40,000 VND. Sunbed rental runs 50,000-100,000 VND at most hotels, free for guests.
Phu Quoc by Motorbike: A Day Route
Rent a bike in Duong Dong (150,000-200,000 VND/day, passport copy required) and head south on the main DT975 road. First stop: Phu Quoc fish sauce factory at Nuoc Mam Hung Thanh (free entry, fascinating 20-minute tour). The island produces some of Vietnams best fish sauce.
Continue south to Sao Beach (25km from town, 30 minutes). Arrive before 10am for clean sand and quiet water. Spend 2 hours swimming, then ride to An Thoi fishing village at the southern tip for lunch (seafood rice, 60,000 VND at the harbor stalls).
Return via the interior road through pepper plantations. Stop at a farm (free tours, pepper from 100,000 VND per bag). The total loop is about 80km and takes a full day with stops. Fill up at the petrol station in Duong Dong before leaving. Gas stations are scarce in the south.
Phu Quoc for Couples: Romance on the Island
JW Marriott Emerald Bay at the southern tip is the marquee romantic property from $320/night. The architecture is themed around a fictional university, eccentric but genuinely beautiful. Sunset dinner at the on-site French restaurant overlooking the bay is worth the splurge at 1,500,000 VND for two.
For something more intimate, Mango Bay ($150-240/night) uses no air conditioning by design: open-air bamboo bungalows with ceiling fans and garden showers. It sounds gimmicky but the sea breeze at this section of Long Beach makes it work. The restaurant serves organic meals from 180,000 VND.
Sunset watching is the main couples activity. The Sailing Club on Long Beach does cocktails from 80,000 VND with direct sand seating. For a private experience, hire a boat from An Thoi port (800,000 VND for 2 hours) and anchor off a deserted island. Your captain will know the spots.
Snorkeling the An Thoi Islands
The An Thoi archipelago off Phu Quocs southern tip has 15 islands with coral reefs in varying condition. Hon Thom (Pineapple Island) has the most accessible snorkeling with coral starting 20 meters from shore. Hon Mong Tay (Fingernail Island) has better coral and fewer tourists.
Day trips from An Thoi port cost $25-40 per person including boat, lunch, snorkeling gear, and 2-3 island stops. Book through your hotel or directly at the port (bargain down from the first price). Boats depart around 8:30am and return by 3pm.
Visibility peaks from November through May at 10-20 meters. Monsoon season (July-September) drops it to under 5 meters with rough seas that cancel trips. Bring an underwater camera. Reef fish, sea cucumbers, and occasional sea turtles are common. Touching coral carries a fine.
Where to Eat in Phu Quoc
The Night Market in Duong Dong is the starting point. Grilled seafood row on the right side: scallops 10,000 VND each, grilled squid 80,000 VND, sea urchin 30,000 VND. The stalls with the longest queues have the freshest catch. Budget 200,000-300,000 VND for a full dinner.
Beyond the market, Crab House on Tran Hung Dao does excellent pepper crab at 400,000 VND per kilo (Phu Quoc pepper is famous). Xin Chao on the same road serves local-style pho and com tam from 40,000 VND. The Italian restaurants near Long Beach are surprisingly good: Peppers Pizza does wood-fired pies from 180,000 VND.
For seafood with a view, Ham Ninh fishing village on the east coast (20 minutes by motorbike) serves boiled crab fresh from the boats at 200,000 VND per kilo. Cash only. Go at lunch for the freshest selection. The village empties by 3pm.
Phu Quoc with Kids: Family Guide
Vinpearl Safari (150,000 VND kids, 500,000 VND adults) is the top family activity. The open-range bus tour through the African animal area takes 30 minutes. The walking zoo section has gibbons, red pandas, and a feeding area. Budget 3-4 hours total.
Long Beach is ideal for kids: shallow, calm, warm water (28-30 degrees year-round). The section near Famiana resort has the gentlest slope. Famiana itself ($160-250/night) runs a kids club and has a beachfront family pool. La Veranda ($145-280/night) has a similar setup with slightly more colonial charm.
