Positano

The postcard pick, worth every euro

Luxury $250-$600/night

Positano clings to the cliffs above the Tyrrhenian Sea, its pastel houses stacked from Via Cristoforo Colombo down to the black-sand Spiaggia Grande. Via dei Mulini is the main pedestrian artery, lined with boutiques and lemon gelaterias. The Church of Santa Maria Assunta anchors the lower village. Expect 400 steps between your hotel and the beach on average. Most streets are pedestrian-only staircases. The SITA bus stops at the upper Sponda stop, so pack light. Prices run high, but the setting is genuinely unlike anywhere else in Europe. Worth it for one or two nights.

Best for
Honeymoonersphotographersand first-time visitors doing a once-in-a-lifetime splurge
Walk times
  • Spiaggia Grande 5 min
  • Sponda SITA bus stop 15 min
  • Ferry dock at Spiaggia Grande 3 min
Skip if: You hate stairs, are travelling with heavy luggage, or need to watch your daily spend closely
Local tip: The SITA bus from Amalfi costs EUR 2.50 and beats hiring a driver. Book a hotel that offers luggage porterage before you arrive.

Ravello

Gardens, silence, and zero beach crowds

Luxury $180-$500/night

Ravello sits 350 meters above sea level, connected to the coast by a 7km hairpin road from Amalfi town. Piazza Duomo is the village heart, flanked by the 11th-century Duomo di Ravello and the entrance to Villa Rufolo, whose cliff-edge gardens host the summer Ravello Festival. The Belvedere Cimbrone gardens sit at the far end of Via San Francesco, a 10-minute walk from the square. No direct beach: you take a 25-minute bus down to Minori. Wagner composed part of Parsifal here. Gore Vidal lived here for 30 years. The town pulls writers and musicians, not party tourists.

Best for
Couples wanting quiet luxuryculture travelersand anyone sensitive to heat and crowds below
Walk times
  • Villa Rufolo entrance 3 min
  • Belvedere Cimbrone 10 min
  • Minori beach by SITA bus 25 min

Amalfi Town

The transport hub that actually has character

Mid-range $120-$350/night

Amalfi town is the commercial and transport center of the coast, built around Piazza Flavio Gioia where ferries and SITA buses connect the entire region. The Cathedral of Saint Andrew, with its Arab-Norman facade and 62-step staircase, dominates the main square. Via Lorenzo d'Amalfi runs inland through a tight medieval grid of paper shops and trattorie. Most hotels sit within 300 meters of the ferry dock. Less polished than Positano, more lived-in. You can reach Ravello in 25 minutes by bus, Positano in 40, and catch the Capri ferry in 65. Prices are the most accessible on the coast.

Best for
First-time Amalfi Coast visitorsanyone wanting to day-trip across multiple townsand budget-conscious travelers
Walk times
  • Ferry dock 5 min
  • Piazza del Duomo 3 min
  • Valle delle Ferriere hiking trailhead 20 min
Skip if: You want a quiet retreat. Day-tour groups pour into the main square from 9am to 5pm every day in summer.
Local tip: The town empties after 6pm when day-trippers leave. Walk the cathedral stairs at dusk for a completely different experience.

Praiano

The insider's Positano at half the price

Mid-range $100-$280/night

Praiano sits between Positano and Amalfi on the SS163, split into two sections: the upper village around Via Capriglione and the Marina di Praia cove below, reachable by 250 steps or a free hotel shuttle in season. The beach at Marina di Praia is about 40 meters wide, flanked by two sea caves and genuinely photogenic. San Gennaro church at the upper village has a tiled majolica dome visible from passing ferries. The SITA bus stops hourly in both directions. Positano is 15 minutes west, Amalfi 20 minutes east. Far fewer tourists than either, and the sunsets from the terrace bars here are better.

Best for
Repeat visitors who know the coastcouples wanting quiet with easy accessand value-focused travelers
Walk times
  • Marina di Praia beach 10 min
  • SITA bus stop on SS163 2 min
  • Positano by SITA bus 15 min
Skip if: You need many restaurant options within walking distance or a large sandy beach for a full day
Local tip: Ask your hotel about the free shuttle to Marina di Praia. The steps are brutal with luggage in July heat.

Where is the best place to stay on the Amalfi Coast for first-timers?

Amalfi town. You are 5 minutes from the ferry dock, 25 minutes from Ravello by SITA bus, and 40 minutes from Positano. Hotels start at $120 per night. You can cover the whole coast in 3 days without renting a car. Positano is beautiful but you will blow your entire accommodation budget in two nights.

Is Positano worth the extra cost?

For one or two nights, yes. For a full week, probably not. A hotel room with a sea view costs $400 to $600 per night in high season. The same view from Praiano, 15 minutes away by bus, costs $150 to $250. If it is your first time in Italy, Positano is a genuine wow experience. If you have been before, stay in Praiano and take the bus in for the afternoon.

Which area has the best beach on the Amalfi Coast?

All Amalfi Coast beaches are small and pebbly. Positano's Spiaggia Grande is the most iconic, about 200 meters of dark sand with sun loungers at EUR 25 to 30 for two. The free section shrinks to almost nothing in July and August. Marina di Praia in Praiano is smaller but far less crowded. For a proper sandy beach, take the ferry south to Paestum or drive 45 minutes to Palinuro.

Do I need a car on the Amalfi Coast?

No, and a car can be a liability. The SS163 is one lane each way with buses and delivery trucks squeezing through blind corners. Parking in Positano costs EUR 20 to 40 per day. The SITA bus runs every 30 to 60 minutes between all main towns and costs EUR 2.50 per trip. Ferries connect Amalfi, Positano, Salerno, and Capri from April to October. Use public transport and skip the stress.
