Positano

The postcard town that lives up to the hype

Luxury $250-$600/night

Positano delivers exactly what the photos promise. Houses stacked up the cliff above Spiaggia Grande, bougainvillea on every wall, boutiques along Via dei Mulini. But it costs. Budget hotels barely exist. You are paying for the terrace view on Via Cristoforo Colombo and the bragging rights. The quieter Fornillo Beach is a 12-minute walk west along the coast path. Get there before 10am in July or you will not find space. Restaurants on Via Pasitea are better value than anything near the main beach. Beach clubs charge 30 dollars just to rent a sunbed.

Best for

Walk times
  • Spiaggia Grande 8 min
  • Fornillo Beach 12 min
  • Amalfi town by ferry 35 min
Skip if: You are on a tight budget, traveling solo, or visiting in peak August crowds
Local tip: Book a hotel on Via Cristoforo Colombo or higher up the hill for sea views without paying Spiaggia Grande-level prices. The view is identical for half the rate.

Amalfi Town

The practical base with the best ferry connections on the coast

Mid-range $120-$280/night

Amalfi sits in the center of the coast with the biggest port, which means ferries go everywhere. Positano in 35 minutes, Salerno in 75, Capri in 90. The medieval Piazza del Duomo is the social center, ringed by restaurants and lemon-granita carts. Rooms on Via Lorenzo d'Amalfi and the streets above the harbor run 120 to 280 dollars, roughly half of Positano rates. The main beach is unremarkable but you are here to move. Day-trip to Positano in the morning, Ravello in the afternoon, and still make dinner at Trattoria da Gemma by 8pm.

Best for
First-timers wanting to see the full coastfamiliesanyone relying on public transport
Walk times
  • Piazza del Duomo 5 min
  • Ferry port 3 min
  • Ravello by SITA bus 25 min
Skip if: You want seclusion or dramatic views from your room
Local tip: Buy a 24-hour ferry pass at the port ticket office for about 35 dollars. It covers Positano, Praiano, Maiori, and Salerno and saves you 10 dollars over buying individual tickets.

Ravello

Clifftop quiet above the tourist noise at 365 meters

Mid-range $150-$500/night

Ravello sits above the coast connected to Amalfi by a 25-minute SITA bus ride up switchbacks through lemon groves. There is no direct sea access. What you get instead: Villa Rufolo's gardens overlooking the water, the Terrace of Infinity at Villa Cimbrone, and a village that empties out after 6pm when day-trippers leave. Via Roma through the center is a ten-minute walk end to end. Hotels are either budget rooms in private homes or high-end villas with few options in between. Piazza del Vescovado has two good restaurants. Go down to Amalfi for the ferry.

Best for
Couples escaping the crowdsluxury travelersanyone prioritizing views over beach access
Walk times
  • Villa Rufolo 5 min
  • Villa Cimbrone Terrace of Infinity 12 min
  • Amalfi town by SITA bus 25 min
Skip if: You want beach time or need frequent transport connections to move around quickly
Local tip: Visit Villa Cimbrone before 9am. The Terrace of Infinity is mobbed by 10am in summer. Entry is around 10 dollars and the early-morning light on the water is worth the early start.

Praiano

Positano's quieter neighbor at half the price

Mid-range $80-$200/night

Praiano sits three kilometers east of Positano and most tourists drive straight past it. That is the point. Marina di Praia, reached by 100 steps down from the SS163, is a small cove with two beach clubs and a handful of restaurants. San Gennaro beach is another ten minutes along the cliff path west. Hotels along Via Roma share the same sea views as Positano for half the cost. Ferries run from Marina di Praia to Positano in 15 minutes and Amalfi in 25 minutes April to October. The L1 SITA bus connects to both towns year-round.

Best for
Budget-conscious travelersthose wanting fewer crowdsrepeat visitors who know the coast
Walk times
  • Marina di Praia beach 5 min
  • Positano by ferry 15 min
  • Amalfi by ferry 25 min
Skip if: It is your first trip and you want convenience, or you are visiting off-season without a car
Local tip: Ask your hotel if they can give you access to the private lift at Marina di Praia. Some hotels provide it to guests and it saves climbing 100 steps with beach gear.

Which Amalfi Coast town is best for a first visit?

Amalfi town is the best base. It has the most ferry connections, reaching Positano in 35 minutes, Capri in 90, and Salerno in 75. Hotels run 120 to 280 dollars a night compared to 250 to 600 in Positano. You can day-trip everywhere and still return for dinner. Positano is worth visiting but staying there burns through a budget fast.

Is Positano worth the price for a first trip?

Only if you are on a honeymoon or willing to splurge. Positano charges a premium for everything: hotels, restaurants, and beach clubs (30 dollars just for a sunbed on Spiaggia Grande). For the same total budget you can stay four nights in Amalfi town instead of two in Positano, and still visit Positano as a 35-minute ferry day trip.

Can you visit the Amalfi Coast without renting a car?

Yes, and a car is often a disadvantage. The SS163 coastal road is a single lane each way with almost no parking. Ferries connect Positano, Praiano, Amalfi, Maiori, and Salerno from April to October. SITA buses run year-round between all towns, though they get packed in summer. A 24-hour ferry pass from Amalfi port costs about 35 dollars.

When is the best time to visit the Amalfi Coast for the first time?

May or late September. May brings warm weather (20 to 24 C), open beaches, and ferries running without the August crush. Late September means smaller crowds, hotel prices drop 20 to 30 percent, and the sea is still 23 C for swimming. July and August are the most crowded. From December through March most hotels and restaurants close and ferries between towns stop running.
