Where to Stay Guide

Where to Stay for the Holland Tulip Festival

Keukenhof opens late March through mid-May. The fields around Lisse, Hillegom, and Noordwijkerhout are the heart of it. We tested four bases so you can pick the right trade-off between proximity, charm, and price.

Lisse

Sleep five minutes from Keukenhof

Mid-range $140-$280/night

Lisse is the village Keukenhof sits next to. Stay on Heereweg or near Grachtweg and you can walk or cycle to the gardens before the tour buses roll in at 10am. The Black Tulip Hotel on Stationsweg books out a year ahead, so check Hotel De Nachtegaal or the smaller B&Bs on Westerdreef. Bus 858 from Schiphol stops on Heereweg, no train needed. Evenings are quiet. Two restaurants worth a table: De Vier Seizoenen for Dutch classics and 't Lange End for pancakes after a long day in the fields.

Best for
First-timers who want to beat the crowds and skip the Amsterdam commute
Walk times
  • Keukenhof entrance 25 min
  • Lisse bus station 5 min
  • Bulb fields on Delfweg 15 min
Skip if: You want nightlife or restaurants open past 10pm
Local tip: Rent bikes from Rent-a-Bike van Dam on Grachtweg. Cycle the Bollenstreek route through Hillegom at sunrise. The fields glow and you'll have them to yourself until 9am.

Haarlem gives you cobblestone streets, the Grote Markt square, and dinner options that actually stay open. Stay near the Grote Kerk or along Spaarne river. Hotel ML on Klokhuisplein and Ambassador City Centre on Oude Groenmarkt are inside the action. Bus 50 and 51 to Lisse leave from the station every 15 minutes during festival season, journey is 25 minutes. Trains to Amsterdam Centraal run every 10 minutes and take 15 minutes, so you can do a museum afternoon without packing twice. Lange Veerstraat has the best lunch spots, and Jopenkerk brewery in a converted church is the evening move.

Leiden

Canal city with the fastest train to the fields

Mid-range $130-$260/night

Leiden is the smartest train base. From Leiden Centraal, the bus 854 Keukenhof Express runs direct to the gardens in 25 minutes during festival season. The old town along Rapenburg canal is dense with cafes, the Hortus Botanicus, and student bars on Pieterskerkhof. Stay near the station for ease or in the Pieterswijk district for atmosphere. Hotel Mayflower on Beestenmarkt and Golden Tulip Leiden Centre put you between both. Trains to Amsterdam are 35 minutes, to Schiphol 15 minutes. Pick up herring at the Saturday market on Hooglandse Kerkgracht and eat it standing up like a local.

Best for
Travelers without a car who want flexibility and lower prices than Haarlem
Walk times
  • Leiden Centraal to Rapenburg 12 min
  • Bus to Keukenhof: departs from station forecourt 854 min
  • Pieterskerk to Beestenmarkt 7 min
Skip if: You hate any train ride, even short ones
Local tip: Buy the Keukenhof combi-ticket online before you arrive. It includes the bus 854 fare and lets you skip the ticket queue at the gate, which can run 40 minutes on April weekends.

Noordwijk

Beach mornings, tulip afternoons

Noordwijk aan Zee sits 15 minutes by car from the bulb fields and has a wide North Sea beach. Stay along Koningin Wilhelmina Boulevard for sea views or in Noordwijk-Binnen, the inland village, for lower prices and quieter streets. Grand Hotel Huis ter Duin is the landmark luxury pick, while Hotels van Oranje and Hotel Boulevard offer more reasonable rates. Bus 90 connects to Leiden Centraal in 30 minutes for train onward travel. The cycle path along the dunes from Noordwijk to the bulb fields in De Zilk takes 25 minutes and is mostly flat. Eat at De Zeester for fresh sole, then walk it off on the beach.

Best for
Families and anyone who wants something to do besides flowers
Walk times
  • Boulevard to beach: direct, 0 min
  • Noordwijk-Binnen to bulb fields (cycle) 20 min
  • Bus 90 stop to Hotel Boulevard 4 min

When is the best time to visit Holland for tulips?

Mid-April is peak. Keukenhof opens around March 21 and closes May 11, but the bulb fields outside the gardens hit full color between April 10 and April 25. Book accommodation by January for that window. Early March is too brown, after May 5 most fields are already cut.

Do I need to stay near Keukenhof or can I commute from Amsterdam?

You can commute. The Keukenhof Express bus 858 runs from Amsterdam RAI station and takes 50 minutes. But you'll arrive when the gardens are crowded. Staying in Lisse, Haarlem, or Leiden lets you arrive at 8am opening and beat the day-trippers by two hours.

How much does a Keukenhof ticket cost and should I book ahead?

Adult tickets are 21 euros online, 22 euros at the gate in 2026. Book online minimum 3 days ahead during peak weekends. The combi-ticket with bus 854 from Leiden is 36 euros and includes round-trip transport. Saturday entries between April 18 and 26 sell out by Wednesday.

Can I see tulip fields without paying for Keukenhof?

Yes. The fields between Lisse, Hillegom, and Noordwijkerhout are public and free to see from cycling paths. Routes are signposted as the Bollenstreek Route. Park in Lisse or rent a bike at Leiden station and follow the green-and-yellow signs. The fields north of Voorhout on Delfweg are particularly dense.
