01

Downtown Jackson (Town Square)

Walk everywhere, pay for the convenience

Luxury $200-$500/night

Town Square anchors everything with its famous elk antler arches. Cache Street and Broadway Avenue hold most restaurants, bars, and shops within a 5-minute walk. The Million Dollar Cowboy Bar sits 2 blocks from any hotel on this grid. No car needed for dinner or drinks. Hotels on Glenwood Street and Pearl Avenue run 15 percent cheaper than those facing the square directly and still put you 3 minutes from everything. Winter brings parking chaos and holiday crowds. Summer is even more packed. You are paying for location, not space or quiet. Best base if you want Grand Teton day trips without committing to a car from morning to night.

Best for
First-timersnon-skierscouples who want walkable dining and nightlife without a car
Walk times
  • Town Square antler arches 2 min
  • Restaurants on Broadway Avenue 4 min
  • Snow King gondola base 12 min
Skip if: You are skiing Jackson Hole Mountain Resort every day. The 12-mile drive each way from downtown adds 40 minutes round trip.
Local tip: Hotels on King Street and Glenwood Street cost 15 to 20 percent less than those fronting Town Square but still put you inside a 3-minute walk of everything.

Teton Village

Ski-in/ski-out convenience, resort prices to match

Luxury $350-$900/night

Teton Village clusters at the base of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, 12 miles northwest of downtown via Highway 390. Village Drive runs through the slopeside lodges, condos, and a handful of restaurants. The Aerial Tram departs from here. In winter you step outside and onto the mountain in 3 minutes. In summer it is a quieter base for Teton hiking and Snake River float trips. Apres-ski exists but closes early. Dining is limited to roughly 8 establishments. Once the last lift closes, this area goes quiet fast. Drive into Jackson for anything beyond a burger or a cocktail.

Best for
Dedicated skiers and snowboardersfamilies doing ski schoolsummer hikers wanting direct Teton access
Walk times
  • Jackson Hole Mountain Resort base lifts 3 min
  • Aerial Tram loading dock 5 min
  • Teton Village restaurants 7 min
Skip if: You are not skiing or hiking the Tetons daily. Paying resort prices to drive 12 miles into town for dinner does not make sense.
Local tip: Book Teton Village 6 months out for peak ski season (Christmas through late February). Spring and fall shoulder season rates drop 40 to 50 percent for the same rooms.

Snow King Area

The mountain in town, quieter and underrated

Mid-range $150-$350/night

Snow King Mountain rises directly behind the south end of Jackson and hotels along Snow King Avenue and Cache Street Extension give you an in-town ski hill without the Teton Village price. The Snow King ski area is smaller, local-focused, and rarely crowded on weekdays. The summer gondola to the summit costs $30 and delivers views that rival anything in the region. Flat Creek runs along the east side of this neighborhood. You are 10 to 12 minutes on foot from Town Square. The area feels more residential and less touristy than downtown. Motel-style properties here run $150 to $250 in shoulder season.

Best for
Budget-conscious travelersskiers who want a local hillfamilies who need space without resort prices
Walk times
  • Snow King ski lifts 5 min
  • Flat Creek trail access 8 min
  • Town Square 12 min
Skip if: You need Jackson Hole Mountain Resort access. Snow King is a separate mountain with its own ticket and zero connection to JHMR.
Local tip: The Snow King summer gondola stops early in the afternoon. Go before 3pm for summit views. The ice rink at the base is free in winter and almost always uncrowded.

Wilson

Halfway between town and Teton Village, actually livable

Luxury $180-$400/night

Wilson sits on Highway 22, roughly 6 miles west of downtown Jackson and 6 miles from Teton Village. The Stagecoach Bar on Granite Canyon Road is the community anchor and has live music Sunday nights. Fish Creek Road and the highway itself are the main corridors. Vacation rentals and small inns line the side streets. The Snake River is nearby for direct fishing access. This is where guides, ski patrollers, and service workers live. No walkability at all. But if you have a car, you can reach either end of the valley in 12 minutes and pay less than both.

Best for
Repeat visitors with a carbudget travelers wanting flexibilityanyone doing a mix of skiing and town activities
Walk times
  • Stagecoach Bar 6 min
  • Snake River bank fishing access 10 min
  • Nearest full grocery store in Jackson 15 min
Skip if: You do not have a car. There is nothing to walk to in Wilson. Zero pedestrian infrastructure.
Local tip: The Stagecoach Bar Sunday night music is a locals-only tradition. No craft cocktail menu, just well drinks and cold beer. Worth the stop if you want to skip the tourist scene.

What is the best area to stay in Jackson Hole for skiing?

Teton Village for Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. You walk to the Aerial Tram in under 5 minutes and skip the 12-mile daily commute from downtown. Expect $400 to $900 per night in peak season. If you are skiing Snow King, stay in the Snow King area at the south end of Jackson for $150 to $350. The two mountains share no lift ticket and are 3 miles apart.

Is it worth staying in downtown Jackson vs. Teton Village?

Depends entirely on what you are doing. Downtown works if you want restaurants, bars, and Grand Teton day trips without a mountain commute. Teton Village is worth the premium only if you are skiing or hiking the Tetons every single day. The 12-mile drive between them takes 20 to 25 minutes each way, more in snow.

How far is Teton Village from downtown Jackson?

12 miles via Highway 390, which takes 20 to 25 minutes in dry conditions and longer after a storm. The START Bus connects the two for free in winter, running every 30 minutes on the main route. In summer there is no regular shuttle and you need a car or rideshare.

What is the cheapest area to stay in Jackson Hole, WY?

Snow King area and Wilson offer the lowest consistent rates. Snow King hotels on Snow King Avenue and Cache Street Extension run $150 to $250 in shoulder season (March to May, October to November). Wilson vacation rentals go lower. Avoid Christmas week, Presidents Day weekend, and spring break when prices across all areas spike 50 to 80 percent.
