Downtown Jackson (Town Square)

The walkable core. Best access, highest prices, zero excuses needed.

Budget $0-$0/night

Town Square is the center of Jackson's universe, anchored by elk antler arches at each corner. From here, you walk to almost everything in town. Cache Street runs north from the square into quieter blocks where restaurants are better and prices slightly lower. Broadway heads east toward Snow King Mountain, lined with galleries, outfitters, and coffee shops. The main downside is obvious: Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is 18 miles away, a 25-30 minute drive each way. If you are skiing JHMR every day, that commute gets old by day three. But if your trip involves wildlife tours, shopping, the National Museum of Wildlife Art, or casual hiking near town, downtown puts you in the middle of everything. Flat Creek runs along the north edge of the downtown grid and the pedestrian zone around Town Square gets loud on summer evenings. Book a room at least one block off Broadway for quieter nights.

Best for
first-time visitorscouples without carsnon-skierswinter wildlife tripssummer sightseeing
Walk times
  • Town Square elk antler arches 2 min
  • Snow King Mountain base lodge 12 min
  • Jackson Hole Visitor Center at Cache and Gill 5 min
Skip if: You are skiing JHMR every day. The 18-mile commute wastes 45-60 minutes of ski time daily and the round-trip adds up across a 5-day trip.
Local tip: Pearl Street Bagels on Pearl Avenue opens at 6:30am. Get there before 8am or wait in a 30-minute line. The north side of Cache Street near Flat Creek is the quietest block in downtown.

Teton Village

Ski-in, ski-out at one of North America's biggest verticals. Worth every extra dollar if skiing is the point.

Budget $0-$0/night

Eighteen miles northwest of downtown, Teton Village sits at the base of the Teton Range. The aerial tram climbs 4,139 vertical feet to the top of Rendezvous Mountain. In winter, this is where serious skiers stay. Village Drive loops through the base area connecting lodges to the tram, Bridger Gondola, and resort restaurants. Ski-in, ski-out access means you are on snow within minutes of waking up. The catch: everything here costs more than downtown, restaurants included. Many guests drive the 18 miles into Jackson for dinner and save 40 percent. In summer, Teton Village becomes a hiking and mountain biking hub with the aerial tram running daily for sightseeing. Grand Teton National Park's Granite Canyon Entrance is less than 2 miles from the village. No grocery store exists in the village. Stock up in Jackson before arriving. Parking is free but lots fill by 8:30am on powder days.

Best for
dedicated skiers and snowboardersfamilies doing JHMRsummer hikers doing national park daysthose with a budget for premium mountain access
Walk times
  • Jackson Hole Mountain Resort aerial tram base 3 min
  • Bridger Gondola base 5 min
  • Grand Teton National Park Granite Canyon Entrance 8 min
Skip if: You are not skiing or hiking in the mountains. Teton Village has no town amenities, no galleries, limited dining, and nothing to walk to after 9pm.
Local tip: Mangy Moose Saloon on Village Drive is the one bar that feels local. It fills by 4pm on powder days. The Calico restaurant across the road is cheaper than resort options and the pizza is better.

Snow King Area

Jackson's own backyard mountain. Walkable to downtown and underrated by everyone outside Wyoming.

Budget $0-$0/night

Snow King Mountain sits at the south edge of downtown, visible from Town Square if you look east. Snow King Avenue runs from East Broadway to the ski base, a 12-minute walk from Town Square. The mountain is smaller than JHMR but has night skiing Thursday and Friday evenings, which almost no visitor knows about. Flat Creek winds through the neighborhood just north of the ski base, with budget lodging options along Karns Meadow Drive and East Broadway. The residential blocks here are quieter than downtown, but grocery stores, restaurants, and Town Square are within a 10-15 minute walk. Karns Meadow, a 185-acre natural area adjacent to the neighborhood, connects to Jackson's town trail system. Elk cross here in early morning. This is the best area for travelers who want walkability without paying downtown prices, or who want to ski Snow King while keeping JHMR day trips as an option.

Best for
budget travelers wanting walkabilityfamilies with young skierssummer hikersanyone who hates paying downtown rates
Walk times
  • Snow King Mountain base lodge 4 min
  • Town Square elk antler arches 12 min
  • Karns Meadow trailhead 3 min
Skip if: You need ski-in, ski-out access to JHMR. Snow King is its own 400-acre mountain, not a shortcut to the big resort 18 miles away.
Local tip: Snow King has a summer mountain coaster and gondola that runs past Labor Day. It costs $30 and the Teton views from the top are identical to what you get at JHMR. Skip the pricier tram on non-ski days.

Wilson

Halfway between town and the mountain. The choice that makes sense once you have been here before.

Budget $0-$0/night

Nine miles west of Jackson on Highway 22, Wilson sits at the foot of Teton Pass. It has a gas station, the Stagecoach Bar, a small mercantile, and scattered vacation rentals along Fall Creek Road and side streets branching south from the highway. Staying here puts you 9 miles from downtown Jackson and 9 miles from Teton Village, directly in the middle. The 15-minute drive to Teton Village is half the time from downtown, and the 12-minute drive east into Jackson on a flat, straight highway feels easy. Teton Pass above Wilson offers backcountry skiing access that serious skiers plan entire trips around. The pass road can close during storms, so check Wyoming DOT road conditions before committing. Wilson has almost no tourist infrastructure, which is exactly the appeal for repeat visitors. A rental car is non-negotiable. No walkable dining or shops exist in Wilson proper beyond the mercantile.

Best for
repeat visitors who know the valleyskiers splitting time between JHMR and Teton Pass backcountrygroups renting housesthose who want lower prices with a rental car
Walk times
  • Stagecoach Bar on Hwy 22 5 min
  • Wilson Mercantile for groceries 7 min
  • Teton Pass trailheads 12 min
Skip if: You do not have a rental car or are visiting Jackson Hole for the first time. Wilson has zero walking infrastructure and reaching anything requires driving.
Local tip: Sunday nights at the Stagecoach Bar cost $5 cover and a bluegrass jam runs from 9pm. Show up by 8:30pm for a seat. It draws actual Wyoming residents, not tourists, and feels like a different valley entirely.

East Jackson (Elk Refuge Corridor)

Wake up to 7,500 elk in the yard. The wildlife base camp that most visitors miss entirely.

Budget $0-$0/night

The National Elk Refuge begins at the northeast edge of Jackson and runs north along the base of the mountains. Elk Refuge Road heads northeast from Flat Creek Road past the refuge visitor center, where horse-drawn sleigh rides depart December through April. Seven thousand elk winter in the refuge, and from a sleigh you sit surrounded by the herd at close range. The neighborhood here is residential and quiet. Flat Creek Drive and Elk Refuge Road frame the area, with vacation rentals clustered near the refuge boundary. Town Square is a 5-minute drive south on Cache Street or Broadway. The Jackson Hole and Greater Yellowstone Visitor Center sits 3 minutes away at Cache and Gill. In summer, the refuge road becomes a walking and cycling route with pronghorn and sandhill crane sightings most mornings. No walkable dining exists. Budget $20 per day for gas. Best paired with a trip focused on wildlife over nightlife.

Best for
wildlife photographersfamilies wanting unique winter experiencesnature-focused travelersanyone prioritizing the elk sleigh rides
Walk times
  • National Elk Refuge visitor center 8 min
  • Flat Creek public fishing access 5 min
  • Jackson Hole Visitor Center at Cache and Gill by car 3 min
Skip if: You want to walk to bars and restaurants. This area is strictly drive-everywhere. Rideshare coverage is unreliable after 10pm.
Local tip: Elk Refuge sleigh rides cost $25 per adult and book out 2-3 weeks in advance in January. Call the National Elk Refuge visitor center directly rather than booking through a tour operator. Same experience, no markup.

Is Teton Village or downtown Jackson better for skiing JHMR?

Teton Village wins if skiing is your primary reason for visiting. Ski-in, ski-out access and being steps from the aerial tram justify the higher prices. Downtown is 18 miles away, a 25-30 minute drive each way, which means 45-60 minutes of your skiing day gone. That adds up over 4-5 days. Stay downtown only if you are splitting your trip between skiing and other activities, or skiing 1-2 days total. Snow King is a third option: walk to Snow King's 400 acres directly, and drive 30 minutes to JHMR on dedicated ski days.

Is downtown Jackson walkable?

Yes, by mountain town standards. Town Square at Broadway and Cache Street is the core, with restaurants, bars, galleries, and outfitters clustered within a 5-minute walk in every direction. Snow King Mountain's base lodge is 12 minutes east on foot. The National Museum of Wildlife Art is 2.5 miles north and requires a car. Grand Teton National Park's south entrance at Moose is 7 miles north on Highway 191. Stick to downtown for walkability. Anywhere else in the valley needs wheels.

When is the best time to visit Jackson Hole?

January through March for skiing. The mountain averages 459 inches of snow per season. January and February have the best powder quality but temperatures average 28F for highs. June and September are the best summer months. Wildflower season in Grand Teton peaks mid-June to mid-July. September brings fall colors in the aspens around Signal Mountain, smaller crowds than July and August, and elk rut activity starting around mid-month near the refuge. Avoid April and May. The snow is gone but summer has not started, and many facilities are closed or running limited hours.

How far is Teton Village from downtown Jackson, and is there public transit?

Teton Village is exactly 18 miles from Town Square via Highway 22 west and Teton Village Road north. The drive takes 25-30 minutes in clear conditions and up to 40 minutes in winter weather. START Bus runs a fixed route between downtown Jackson and Teton Village during ski season, with the last bus departing Teton Village around 11pm. The fare is $3 each way. In summer, START Bus service exists but runs less frequently. Rideshare drivers do not reliably serve the Teton Village route at late hours, so check return options before you go.

Do you need a rental car to visit Jackson Hole?

If you are staying downtown Jackson for a walkable trip, you can manage without one for 2-3 days. Town Square, restaurants, and galleries are accessible on foot. But Grand Teton National Park is 7 miles north, Teton Village is 18 miles northwest, Yellowstone's south entrance is 90 miles north, and the Elk Refuge sleigh rides are a mile from downtown. Without a car, you pay $60-100 per person for each guided trip. Rent a car. It costs $60-80 per day in Jackson and pays for itself the moment you drive into Grand Teton without a tour booking.
