Downtown Jackson / Town Square

Walk to everything. Pay for the convenience.

Luxury $280-$550/night

Everything in Jackson pivots around Town Square and its famous elk antler arches. Cache Street runs north-south through the action, with galleries, restaurants, and outfitters packed between Broadway and Mercill Avenue. The Million Dollar Cowboy Bar sits on the square itself. King Street and Pearl Street hold the better dinner spots. You are a 14-minute walk from Snow King Mountain and 10 minutes from the National Elk Refuge boundary. In summer, foot traffic is relentless. In winter it quiets down but never empties. Most hotels here are 3 to 4 stars. Right base if you want to walk to dinner without renting a car.

Best for
First-timerscouplesanyone who wants to walk to dinner without relying on a car
Walk times
  • Town Square antler arches 2 min
  • Snow King Mountain base 14 min
  • National Elk Refuge entrance 10 min
Skip if: You are here primarily to ski Teton Village. The 30-minute commute each way adds up across a week.
Local tip: Book on or north of Broadway. The blocks between King Street and Millward Street are quieter than the Cache Street strip without adding any real distance to the action.

Teton Village

Ski out the door. Pay resort prices for everything else.

Luxury $380-$950/night

Teton Village sits at the base of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, 12 miles northwest of downtown via Teton Village Road. The aerial tram leaves from the village and most slope-side properties put you 3 minutes from the lifts. Granite Loop Road circles the core with hotels, condos, and apres-ski bars packed together. Four Seasons and the Continuum are the marquee properties. In summer, the tram still runs for hiking and mountain biking. Restaurants here are good but expensive. Groceries require a drive to Jackson. The tradeoff is clear: no car needed for skiing, but you will want one for everything else.

Best for
Skiers and snowboarders wanting slope access. Summer hikers using the aerial tram into the Tetons.
Walk times
  • Jackson Hole Mountain Resort tram base 3 min
  • Teton Village restaurants and bars 5 min
  • Snake River west bank access 22 min
Skip if: You are not skiing or hiking. There is almost nothing to do in Teton Village without snow or a trail objective.
Local tip: The Village Commons area between the tram base and the parking structure has the best happy hour deals. Hotel bars on Granite Loop charge 30 percent more for the same pour.

Wilson / West Bank

Local town. Snake River out back. 15 minutes from either end.

Luxury $200-$420/night

Wilson is where Jackson Hole residents actually live. It sits on the west bank of the Snake River along Fish Creek Road, roughly 6 miles from downtown Jackson and 6 miles from Teton Village. The Stagecoach Bar on Highway 22 has been the local spot since 1942. Wilson Backcountry Sports handles gear rentals reliably. Most accommodation is vacation rentals and small inns rather than chains. Nez Perce Drive and Fish Creek Road have quiet properties with Teton views on clear mornings. It is car-dependent, but the 15-minute drive in either direction gives you real flexibility without resort prices.

Best for
Repeat visitors wanting a quieter base. Families needing space. Fly fishers targeting the Snake River.
Walk times
  • Stagecoach Bar 5 min
  • Snake River fishing access 10 min
  • Hungry Jack's General Store 6 min
Skip if: You do not have a car. Nothing in Wilson is reachable on foot from most lodging.
Local tip: The Sunday bluegrass jam at the Stagecoach Bar is free and runs year-round. It is the most authentically local thing you can do in Jackson Hole.

South Jackson / Snow King Area

Most affordable. Still walkable downtown. Local mountain out back.

Mid-range $150-$290/night

The south side of Jackson along East Broadway and South Cache Street is where prices drop without losing walkability. Snow King Mountain is right here, used by locals for night skiing and quick laps when Teton Village is a haul. The National Elk Refuge runs along the east edge, and winter sleigh rides depart from nearby Miller Park. Karns Meadow Trail starts a 5-minute walk away. The Virginian Lodge and several independent motels sit on this stretch offering clean rooms at $150 to $280. Town Square is a 15-minute walk north on Cache Street. Solid choice if you want to save money without feeling stranded.

Best for
Budget-conscious travelersSnow King skiersanyone on a multi-week trip managing costs.
Walk times
  • Snow King Mountain base 8 min
  • Town Square 15 min
  • National Elk Refuge boundary 12 min
Skip if: You are focused on Teton Village skiing. South Jackson adds 35 minutes roundtrip to every ski day.
Local tip: Snow King runs night skiing Thursday through Saturday. Mid-week in winter the mountain is nearly empty and window tickets are significantly cheaper than Teton Village day passes.

Where should first-time visitors to Jackson Hole stay?

Downtown Jackson near Town Square is the safest first choice. You can walk to restaurants on Pearl Street and King Street, shops on Cache Street, and reach Snow King Mountain in 14 minutes on foot. Budget $280 to $400 per night for a decent 3-star option. You will not need a car for evenings, which matters more than most people expect in a place where Ubers are unreliable and taxis are scarce.

Is it worth staying in Teton Village instead of downtown Jackson?

Only if skiing or snowboarding is your main reason for visiting. Teton Village puts you 3 minutes from the aerial tram and eliminates the 30-minute daily commute each way. But rooms run $100 to $300 higher per night than downtown, and you will need to drive into Jackson for any real restaurant variety or grocery run. Non-skiers have almost no reason to base there.

What is the cheapest area to stay in Jackson Hole?

South Jackson along East Broadway and South Cache Street runs $150 to $290 per night at the Virginian Lodge and similar independents. Town Square is a 15-minute walk north and Snow King Mountain is 8 minutes away on foot. Wilson has comparable prices but requires a car for everything. South Jackson is the value pick for anyone who wants to save money without being stranded.

Do you need a car to get around Jackson Hole?

It depends where you stay. Downtown Jackson is walkable for evenings, but you need a car or the START Bus to reach Grand Teton National Park, Teton Village, or Snake River access points. The START Bus runs between downtown and Teton Village roughly every 30 to 45 minutes during ski season at no cost. Anywhere outside central Jackson requires a car.
