01

Negril

Seven miles of sand, the best sunsets in the Caribbean, and the most relaxed pace on the island

Budget $0-$0/night

Negril splits into two distinct zones. The 7 Mile Beach runs along Norman Manley Boulevard, lined with open-air bars, jerk stands, and resorts ranging from budget guesthouses to all-inclusives. The West End hugs limestone cliffs along West End Road, where boutique hotels hang over the water and Rick's Cafe packs in crowds every evening for cliff diving and the famous sunset. Negril Town itself sits between the two, walkable from both. For nightlife, head to Alfred's Ocean Palace on the beach strip. Budget travellers cluster near the northern end where smaller guesthouses offer rooms from $70.

  • Rick's Cafe (West End Road) 25 min
  • Negril Town center 20 min
Skip if: You need quick airport access (90 min to Montego Bay airport) or want proper shopping and structured nightlife
Local tip: West End cliff hotels run 20-30% cheaper than beachfront and often have better snorkeling right off the rocks. The sunset views beat the beach strip.

Montego Bay

The easiest arrival, the busiest strip, and the most resort infrastructure on the island

Budget $0-$0/night

Montego Bay is the default landing spot for most visitors. The Hip Strip, officially Gloucester Avenue, runs parallel to Doctor's Cave Beach where vendors, restaurants, and beach bars cluster. Kent Avenue loops around the bay and connects to the Hip Strip. The Half Moon resort corridor stretches east along the A1 Highway toward Rose Hall, where the famous Great House sits. Most mid-range and luxury resorts sit within a 20-minute drive of Sangster International Airport. For local food, skip the strip and head to Charles Gordon Market on Harbour Street or Pier 1 on Howard Cooke Boulevard.

Ocho Rios

Waterfalls, cruise ships, and the north coast's most-visited resort town

Budget $0-$0/night

Ocho Rios sits on a natural bay on Jamaica's north coast. Main Street and DaCosta Drive form the town's spine, lined with duty-free shops and jerk stands catering to cruise day-trippers. Dunn's River Falls, the island's top attraction, is a 20-minute walk or 5-minute taxi east along the A3. Island Village, a shopping and entertainment complex on the waterfront, anchors the tourist zone. Resorts stack up on both sides of town, with Sandals Ochi to the east and smaller boutique options in the hills above town. Avoid town on days when two or more cruise ships are docked.

Walk times
  • Island Village waterfront 5 min
  • Dunn's River Falls 20 min
  • Turtle Beach 10 min

Kingston

The capital, the culture, and the real Jamaica that most tourists never see

Budget $0-$0/night

New Kingston is the commercial and nightlife hub, centered around Knutsford Boulevard and New Kingston Shopping Centre. Hope Road runs northeast from here toward Devon House, where you get the island's best rum raisin ice cream, and the Bob Marley Museum at 56 Hope Road. Half Way Tree, 15 minutes north, is Kingston's main transport hub. Emancipation Park on Knutsford Boulevard is the gathering point for evening joggers and weekend families. Most tourists skip Kingston entirely, which is a mistake. Stay in New Kingston or the Liguanea neighborhood and you're safe, walkable, and immersed in actual Jamaican life.

Walk times
  • Emancipation Park 5 min
  • Bob Marley Museum (56 Hope Road) 20 min
  • Devon House 15 min
Skip if: You want beach, you want resort infrastructure, or you are uncomfortable navigating an unfamiliar capital city on foot
Local tip: New Kingston has several excellent jerk spots on Knutsford Boulevard that locals actually use. Skip the hotel restaurants and eat where the city eats.

What is the best area to stay in Jamaica for first-timers?

Negril wins for most first-timers. You get 7 Mile Beach, walkable restaurants along Norman Manley Boulevard, and a relaxed atmosphere that lets you settle in without being overwhelmed. Montego Bay is better if you value easy airport logistics or need to get in and out quickly. It is 10 minutes from Sangster International Airport versus 90 minutes for Negril.

Is Negril or Montego Bay better?

Depends what you're after. Negril has the better beach (calmer water, less crowded, stunning sunsets from the West End cliffs on West End Road) and a more relaxed pace overall. Montego Bay has more infrastructure, more dining options along Gloucester Avenue, and is 10 minutes from the airport. Budget travellers almost always prefer Negril. Families who want a smooth arrival often pick Montego Bay.

Is Kingston safe for tourists?

New Kingston and the Liguanea area are genuinely safe for visitors and worth the trip. Stick to the commercial district around Knutsford Boulevard and Hope Road and you are as safe as any Caribbean capital. Avoid Trenchtown and areas west of downtown after dark. The payoff is real: the Bob Marley Museum at 56 Hope Road, Devon House ice cream, and a food scene the resort towns cannot match.

Which area of Jamaica is cheapest to stay in?

Kingston has the lowest average nightly rates, with guesthouses from $65 and solid business hotels around $100-120. Negril is the cheapest beach option, with budget guesthouses on the northern end of 7 Mile Beach from $70 per night. Montego Bay is the priciest overall. The Hip Strip starts around $120 and the resort corridor along the A1 averages $200-400 per night.
