Shinjuku

The base camp that does everything

Mid-range $160-$380/night

Stay on the west side of Shinjuku Station around Nishi-Shinjuku 6-chome or near Chuo Park. It's calmer than the Kabukicho side and family hotels here have proper twin rooms with space for a cot. You're 4 stops from Tokyo Disney via the JR line and 8 minutes walk to the Odakyu line for Hakone day trips. Takashimaya Times Square has a Pokemon Center, Tokyu Hands, and a kids floor. Convenience stores on every corner solve breakfast at 6am when kids wake up jet-lagged. Avoid hotels east of Yasukuni-dori. That's the red light zone.

Best for
First-time familieskids ages 5 and upanyone planning day trips
Walk times
  • Shinjuku Station: 5 to 12 min
  • Shinjuku Gyoen park 10 min
  • Tokyo Metropolitan Building observation deck (free) 8 min
Skip if: You want quiet streets at night or you're traveling with a baby who naps early
Local tip: Book a hotel with a coin laundry. The Keio Plaza and Hilton Tokyo both have them, and you'll need it by day three.

Asakusa

Old Tokyo, traditional, walkable

Mid-range $90-$220/night

Asakusa runs at a slower pace and the streets around Senso-ji temple are flat and stroller-friendly. Stay near Kappabashi-dori, the kitchenware street, or along Kokusai-dori. You're a 3-minute walk to Sumida Park where kids can run free along the river with views of the Skytree. The Tobu and Ginza lines connect you everywhere, and it's 35 minutes direct to Narita on the Keisei Skyliner. Restaurants close earlier here, around 9pm, which actually works for families. Skip the streets immediately south of Sensoji after 10pm. Stick to Nakamise-dori and Orange Street.

Best for
Budget familiesculture-focused tripskids 7 and up
Walk times
  • Senso-ji temple 5 min
  • Sumida River and park 6 min
  • Tokyo Skytree 18 min
Skip if: You want late-night dining or quick access to Shibuya and Harajuku
Local tip: The Asakusa Tourist Center across from Kaminarimon has a free observation deck on the 8th floor. Better than paying for Skytree on a cloudy day.

Tokyo Station / Marunouchi

Comfort, space, and Disney in 15 minutes

Luxury $220-$450/night

This is the splurge zone. Hotels around Yaesu and Marunouchi have the largest rooms in central Tokyo, with proper family suites and bathtubs deep enough for kids to play in. You're directly above Tokyo Station, which means 15 minutes to Tokyo Disney on the Keiyo line and bullet train access to Kyoto without dragging suitcases on the metro. Naka-dori street has wide sidewalks, sit-down restaurants with high chairs, and the Imperial Palace gardens 10 minutes away for morning runs. Character Street in the basement of Tokyo Station is a Pokemon, Studio Ghibli, and Hello Kitty playground. Pricey but worth it for short stays.

Walk times

  • Imperial Palace East Gardens 10 min

Odaiba

The kid-engineered island

Mid-range $140-$300/night

Odaiba is built for families. The waterfront is car-free, the sidewalks are double-wide, and everything is connected by indoor walkways so weather doesn't ruin a day. Stay near Daiba Station on the Yurikamome line. TeamLab Planets is one stop away, Legoland Discovery Center is in the DECKS mall, and the Odaiba Beach is the only Tokyo beach kids can actually walk on. The Yurikamome line is fully automated with no driver, so kids can sit at the front and pretend to drive. Transit to central Tokyo is 20 minutes and slightly inconvenient. That's the trade-off for the calm.

Best for
Toddlersrainy daysfamilies who want a slower pace
Walk times
  • TeamLab Planets 12 min
  • Odaiba Seaside Park 5 min
  • DiverCity (Gundam statue, food court) 8 min
Skip if: You're only in Tokyo 2 nights or want easy Shinjuku and Shibuya access
Local tip: Hotel Grand Nikko Tokyo Daiba has a free shuttle to Tokyo Station. Worth booking if you don't want to deal with the Yurikamome with luggage.

Is Shibuya a good area to stay with kids?

No. Shibuya is loud, crowded around the Scramble until midnight, and most hotels have small rooms not built for cots or extra beds. Stay in Shinjuku instead. It's 4 minutes by train and gives you the same access without the chaos.

What's the best area for Tokyo Disney with a family?

Marunouchi or Yaesu near Tokyo Station. The Keiyo line takes you to Maihama Station in 15 minutes with no transfers. Staying inside the Disney resort is fine for one night but doubles your nightly rate compared to Tokyo Station hotels.

Are Tokyo hotel rooms big enough for a family of four?

Most aren't. Standard twin rooms in Shinjuku and Asakusa run 18 to 22 square meters which fits 2 adults and 1 small child max. For 4 people, book a family room or junior suite at hotels in Marunouchi, Odaiba, or the larger international chains. Expect to pay $250 plus per night.

Should we stay near Narita or Haneda airport instead?

Only if your flight lands after 10pm or leaves before 7am. Otherwise the Narita Express to Tokyo Station takes 55 minutes and the Keikyu line from Haneda takes 30 minutes. Airport hotels are isolated and you'll waste a full day on transit.
