Asakusa

Traditional Tokyo with a zoo, aquarium, and temple steps from your hotel

Mid-range $80-$250/night

Asakusa sits along the Sumida River, anchored by Senso-ji Temple on Nakamise-dori. Kids love the giant red lantern at Kaminarimon Gate and the traditional toy shops along the covered arcade. Ueno Zoo is an 18-minute walk north past Kototoi-dori. The streets around Kappabashi-dori are stroller-friendly and wide. Hotels here cost 20% less than central Shinjuku while keeping you on the Ginza and Asakusa subway lines. Sumida Aquarium is 10 minutes on foot inside Tokyo Skytree Town at Oshiage. This is the most grounded, least chaotic base for families who want culture plus easy logistics.

Best for
Families who want walkable culturecheaper hotelsand easy subway access to the rest of Tokyo
Walk times

Ikebukuro

Japan's most underrated family entertainment district

Budget $75-$220/night

Ikebukuro's Sunshine City complex on Higashi-Ikebukuro 3-chome has a Pokemon Center, Namco Namjatown indoor theme park, a rooftop aquarium, and a planetarium under one roof. Streets around the East Exit are wide and stroller-accessible. Hikarigaoka Park, a massive free green space, is 10 minutes north by subway. Hotels adjacent to Sunshine City eliminate transit entirely for the first two days. The Marunouchi and Fukutoshin lines connect Ikebukuro to Shinjuku in 8 minutes. Room rates run 15-20% cheaper than Shibuya. This is the best value family base in Tokyo that most guides overlook.

The west side around Nishishinjuku 1-chome is entirely family-appropriate with department store food courts and robot-themed cafes. Stay on the west side. Kabukicho on the east side is fine in daylight but chaotic after dark. Newer hotels near the South Exit have better-designed family rooms than the older business hotels near the North Exit.

What is the best area in Tokyo for families with young children?

Odaiba and Asakusa are the strongest picks for children under 8. Odaiba has Legoland Discovery Centre and KidZania Tokyo within walking distance plus hotel rooms 20-30% larger than central Tokyo. Asakusa has Senso-ji Temple, Sumida Aquarium at Skytree Town, and Ueno Zoo all within 20 minutes on foot. Odaiba hotels start at $100 per night. Asakusa starts at $80 per night. Ikebukuro is the best value for ages 6-14 with Sunshine City's Pokemon Center and Namjatown.

Is the Tokyo subway easy to navigate with a stroller?

Yes, with preparation. Most major stations have elevators but they sit far from main exits. Asakusa, Shinjuku, and Ikebukuro all have elevator access on key lines. Avoid Shibuya Station transfers with a stroller during rush hour from 08:00 to 09:30 as the crowds are extreme and escalator directions change. The Yurikamome and Rinkai lines serving Odaiba are newer, wider, and far more stroller-friendly than central city lines. Download the Tokyo Metro app before you arrive as it shows elevator routes for each station.

How far is Tokyo Disneyland from the central family hotel areas?

From Shinjuku: 40 minutes via JR Yamanote to Tokyo Station then Keiyo Line to Maihama. From Asakusa: 50 minutes via Toei Asakusa Line to Shinkiba then Keiyo Line. From Odaiba: 45 minutes via Rinkai Line to Maihama. Tokyo Disneyland is technically in Urayasu, Chiba Prefecture. Tickets start at 7,900 JPY per adult (roughly $52) and must be booked online in advance. No same-day walk-up tickets are available.

Which Tokyo family attractions require advance booking?

Book these before you arrive: teamLab Planets Toyosu (sells out 2-3 weeks ahead, 3,200 JPY per adult), KidZania Tokyo (timed entry, book 30 days out), Tokyo Disneyland and DisneySea (online only, no walk-up tickets). Ghibli Museum in Mitaka requires a lottery ticket 2 months in advance via the official Japanese booking site. Namjatown in Ikebukuro, Senso-ji Temple, and Ueno Zoo require no advance booking. Odaiba's Legoland Discovery Centre can be booked same-week online at a discount versus walk-up price.
