Negril

Seven miles of the best sand in the Caribbean

Mid-range $80-$220/night

Negril anchors Jamaica's west tip, built along Norman Manley Boulevard and the Seven Mile Beach strip. The water is calm, the sand is powder-fine, and no cruise ships dock here. Budget guesthouses on Sheffield Road start under $80 per night. Mid-range resorts line the beach corridor between $150 and $220. The West End Cliffs, a 25-minute walk south on West End Road, offer a completely different vibe: dramatic limestone drops, cliff bars, and Rick's Cafe. Sunsets are genuinely world-class. The town market sits 12 minutes inland from the beach for local grocery runs and fresh fruit.

  • Rick's Cafe on West End Cliffs 25 min
  • Negril town market 12 min
Skip if: You want excursion access to Dunn's River Falls or Kingston nightlife without a 90-minute drive
Local tip: Book the West End Cliffs side instead of the beach strip for 30 percent lower rates, quieter nights, and the same sunset. The beach is a 10-minute walk.

Montego Bay

Closest to the airport and the biggest resort infrastructure

Mid-range $120-$350/night

Montego Bay is where most visitors land and many never leave. Gloucester Avenue, the Hip Strip, is the tourist spine: jerk stands, beach bars, and mid-range hotels running from Walter Fletcher Beach to Cornwall Beach. Sangster International Airport is 15 minutes east by taxi. Rose Hall, the luxury corridor, sits another 10 minutes along the A1 highway with Sandals and Half Moon Resort. Kent Avenue connects the Hip Strip to Downtown MoBay for local shopping and the craft market. It is noisy and commercial but genuinely convenient. All-inclusive resorts here are well-organized and the transfer from the airport is the shortest on the island.

Ocho Rios

North coast hub for waterfalls, excursions, and decent beaches

Mid-range $100-$280/night

Ocho Rios sits on the north coast, 90 minutes east of Montego Bay on the A3 highway. Dunn's River Falls, the island's most visited attraction, is 2 km west of town along the A3. Main Street and DaCosta Drive form the town grid with duty-free shops, the Ocho Rios Craft Park, and jerk vendors. Turtle Beach, the main swimming spot, is a 10-minute walk from most hotels. Shaw Park Beach offers a calmer alternative. Cruise ships dock frequently and push midday crowds hard on Main Street, but mornings and evenings belong to hotel guests. Coyaba River Garden sits 15 minutes inland from Main Street.

Best for
Active travelersfamiliesvisitors prioritizing excursions over beach relaxation
Walk times
  • Turtle Beach 10 min
  • Ocho Rios Craft Park on Main Street 8 min
  • Dunn's River Falls entrance on A3 30 min
Skip if: You want a quiet town. Cruise ship crowds between 10am and 3pm are relentless on Main Street.
Local tip: Visit Dunn's River Falls before 9am or after 3pm. The waterfall is identical, but the cruise ship tour groups are not there.

Kingston

Real Jamaica: culture, music history, and zero tourist polish

Mid-range $90-$200/night

Kingston is the capital and the cultural engine of the island. New Kingston, centered on Knutsford Boulevard and Trafalgar Road, is the hotel and business district. The Bob Marley Museum on Hope Road is a 20-minute drive from New Kingston. Devon House on Hope Road serves the best ice cream on the island and is worth a dedicated visit. Emancipation Park on Knutsford Boulevard is a five-minute walk from most New Kingston hotels. The National Gallery on Orange Street is 30 minutes on foot. Port Royal, the old pirate capital, is 30 minutes by water taxi from downtown. Hotels run $90 to $200 with no resort markup.

Walk times
  • Emancipation Park, Knutsford Boulevard 5 min
  • Devon House, Hope Road 20 min

What is the best place to stay in Jamaica for first-timers?

Negril is the strongest first-time pick. Seven Mile Beach is genuinely one of the best beaches in the Caribbean, the water stays calm, and the vibe is relaxed without being remote. Budget rooms on Sheffield Road start at $80. If airport convenience matters more than beach quality, Montego Bay works too since Sangster International is only 15 minutes from the Hip Strip.

Is Montego Bay or Negril better for families?

Montego Bay for logistics, Negril for the beach. Montego Bay has all-inclusive resorts like Sandals Royal Caribbean and the Half Moon Resort with organized kids programs and the airport is 15 minutes away. Negril has calmer, shallower water and the full Seven Mile Beach strip. For families with children under 10 who want resort facilities, Montego Bay. For teens and older who want the beach, Negril.

How far is Ocho Rios from Montego Bay airport?

About 90 minutes by taxi or shared shuttle along the A3 coastal highway. Shared shuttle transfers cost roughly $35 to $45 per person. Private taxis run $80 to $100. Most Ocho Rios resorts offer their own airport transfers. If you route through Kingston's Norman Manley Airport instead, Ocho Rios is only 65 minutes away, which can save time depending on your flight origin.

Is Kingston safe for tourists?

New Kingston, around Knutsford Boulevard and Trafalgar Road, is safe for standard tourist activity during the day. The Bob Marley Museum, Devon House, and Emancipation Park are all easily accessible from New Kingston hotels. Avoid downtown Kingston after dark and skip areas south of the waterfront. Kingston suits independent travelers more than package tourists since there are no beach resorts and no organized tourist infrastructure.
