West Yellowstone, MT

The classic basecamp for first-timers

Budget $0-$0/night

West Yellowstone sits right at the West Entrance and is the busiest of the gateway towns for a reason. You can walk Canyon Street and Madison Avenue to dinner at Bullwinkle's Saloon or Wild West Pizzeria, hit the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center, then drive 14 miles to Old Faithful by 8am. Most hotels cluster along Yellowstone Avenue and Firehole Avenue. Summer prices spike hard. Book by February for July. The town has a small grocery (Market Place) and a gas station that runs out of premium by mid-afternoon in August. Cell signal is solid here, which it won't be once you cross the gate.

Best for
First Yellowstone tripfamiliesanyone prioritizing Old Faithful and the geyser basins
Walk times
  • West Entrance gate 3 min
  • Bullwinkle's Saloon 5 min
  • Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center 7 min
Skip if: You want quiet. This town runs on tour buses and RV traffic from June through Labor Day.
Local tip: Drive into the park before 7am. The Madison River pullouts have bison and elk standing in the road most mornings, and you'll be at Old Faithful before the 9am tour bus wave.

Gardiner, MT

Wildlife country and the only year-round gate

Budget $0-$0/night

Gardiner sits on the Yellowstone River at the North Entrance, under the original Roosevelt Arch. It's smaller and grittier than West Yellowstone, with Park Street running the length of town. The Iron Horse Bar and Wonderland Cafe are the locals' picks. You're 5 miles from Mammoth Hot Springs and 30 miles from Lamar Valley, which is why wildlife photographers stay here. The North Entrance is the only gate open to cars year-round, so this is your winter base too. The 2022 floods rebuilt the road into the park, and traffic now moves faster than pre-flood. Rooms here run cheaper than West Yellowstone but book up fast in September for the elk rut.

Best for
Wildlife photographerswinter visitorsLamar Valley day trips
Walk times
  • Roosevelt Arch and North Entrance 8 min
  • Yellowstone River raft launch 4 min
  • Iron Horse Bar 3 min
Skip if: You want a polished resort experience or walkable nightlife past 10pm.
Local tip: Drive Lamar Valley at sunrise with a thermos. Wolves are most active between the Lamar River bridge and Slough Creek pullout from late May through June.

Cooke City, MT

The quiet Northeast gate next to wolf country

Budget $0-$0/night

Cooke City has maybe 75 year-round residents and one main road, US-212, which becomes the Beartooth Highway heading east. You're 4 miles from the Northeast Entrance and dropped straight into Lamar Valley, the best wolf-watching corridor in the lower 48. Lodging is small motels and a few cabins along Main Street. The Beartooth Cafe and Miners Saloon cover dinner. The Beartooth Highway closes mid-October to late May, so this stop only works June through early October. There's no cell service in town for most carriers and the nearest grocery is 60 miles in either direction. Bring food. The trade-off is that you wake up with bison outside the motel window.

Best for
Wolf watchershikersanyone who wants Lamar Valley out their door
Walk times
  • Northeast Entrance 5 min
  • Beartooth Cafe 2 min
  • Miners Saloon 3 min
Skip if: You're visiting outside June-September or need reliable cell service.
Local tip: Drive the Beartooth Highway up to 10,947 feet on a clear afternoon. The pullouts above Vista Point have mountain goats most days in July.

Canyon Village (in-park)

The most central in-park lodge

Budget $0-$0/night

Canyon Village sits at the geographic center of Yellowstone, a 5-minute walk from the North Rim of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. Canyon Lodge has the most rooms of any in-park property and a full restaurant, deli, and general store. You're 16 miles from Hayden Valley bison herds, 38 miles from Old Faithful, and 19 miles from Tower Junction for Lamar access. The trade-off for staying in-park is no air conditioning, thin walls, and rooms that feel like a 1990s ski lodge. But you wake up inside the park, and you can drive to Artist Point for sunrise without sitting in the West Entrance line. Reservations open 13 months out and the good rooms go in the first week.

Best for
Travelers who want full days in the parkGrand Canyon of the Yellowstone hikers
Walk times
  • North Rim Trail to Lower Falls overlook 8 min
  • Canyon Visitor Education Center 4 min
  • Canyon Lodge dining room 2 min
Skip if: You want modern hotel amenities, AC, or strong wifi.
Local tip: Walk the South Rim Trail from Uncle Tom's Trail parking to Artist Point at 6am. You'll have the Lower Falls overlook to yourself and avoid the 11am tour bus crowd.

Which gate is closest to Old Faithful?

The West Entrance at West Yellowstone. It's 30 miles to Old Faithful, about a 45-minute drive without traffic. From the North Entrance at Gardiner you're looking at 51 miles and closer to 90 minutes.

Can I stay inside the park instead of a gateway town?

Yes, but book 13 months out. Old Faithful Inn, Lake Yellowstone Hotel, and Canyon Lodge release reservations on the same day each year and the best rooms are gone within hours. In-park rooms run $280-$520 and have no AC or TVs.

Which town is best for seeing wolves?

Cooke City puts you 4 miles from Lamar Valley, the best wolf habitat in the park. Gardiner is the second-best base at 30 miles out. West Yellowstone is too far for an effective sunrise wolf trip.

Is West Yellowstone worth the higher prices?

For a first trip, yes. You're walking distance from restaurants, gas, and groceries, and you're closest to the geyser basins where most first-timers want to spend their time. For a return trip focused on wildlife, switch to Gardiner or Cooke City.
