01

West Yellowstone, MT

The most convenient base. Everyone knows it. Most pick it for good reason.

Mid-range $100-$350/night

Canyon Street runs through the center of this one-square-mile town and ends 0.3 miles from the West Entrance Gate. You clear the booth and within 35 minutes you are parked at Madison Junction, where the Gibbon and Firehole rivers meet. Old Faithful is 50 minutes from your door. Grand Prismatic Spring is 40 minutes on Firehole Lake Drive. No other gateway puts you this close to the thermal basin. The town sits at 6,666 feet, dry and pine-scented, with a walkable grid of diners, gear shops, and outfitters on Canyon and Yellowstone avenues. The Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center at the corner of Canyon and Gibbon is worth an hour before you cross into the park on days when the wildlife inside is not cooperating. Book in January if you want July availability. Not March. The West Entrance closes to private vehicles from November through April, typically, so winter visitors need Gardiner instead. Fall is underrated here. Crowds thin after Labor Day, elk bugle in the meadows just outside of town, and prices collapse around September 10. That two-week window before the hard close is the best value in any Yellowstone gateway.

Best for
first-time visitorsfamiliessummer thermal basin accesstravelers wanting walkable amenities
Walk times
  • West Entrance Gate 5 min
  • Old Faithful Geyser 50 min
  • Grand Prismatic Spring 40 min
  • Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center 5 min
Skip if: You are visiting November through April when the entrance closes to private vehicles, or your priority is wildlife over geysers.
Local tip: Town gas stations run out of premium fuel on July 4th and Labor Day weekends, so fill up in Idaho Falls or Bozeman before arriving. The better breakfast spots are on Yellowstone Avenue rather than Canyon Street and they fill up before the tourist gridlock hits at 8 AM.

Gardiner, MT

The year-round gateway. Underrated in summer, essential in winter.

Mid-range $80-$280/night

The Roosevelt Arch on Park Street marks the only Yellowstone entrance open 365 days a year, and that single fact makes Gardiner the correct choice for winter visitors and anyone arriving in shoulder season. The town sits on the Yellowstone River at 5,314 feet, noticeably warmer than West Yellowstone in March and October. Main Street has three decent restaurants and one gear shop. This is not a destination town. It is a functional base with exceptional proximity to the park's best wildlife corridor. From Gardiner you reach Mammoth Hot Springs in 10 minutes and the start of the Lamar Valley in about 45 minutes via the Grand Loop Road through Tower Junction. The Lamar Valley is the most reliable wildlife-watching road corridor in the lower 48 states. Bison, wolves, and bears are visible from pullouts without leaving your vehicle. Winter is where Gardiner earns its reputation. The northern herd stays lower in the valley from November through March, wolves follow the herd, and the road from Gardiner through Mammoth is the only plowed surface in the northern park. Book a small guesthouse on Scott Street between November and February and you have that road almost to yourself.

Walk times
  • Roosevelt Arch 10 min
  • Mammoth Hot Springs Terraces 10 min
  • Lamar Valley start 45 min
  • Norris Geyser Basin 55 min
Skip if: You need fast access to Old Faithful or the thermal basin in summer. West Yellowstone puts you 50 minutes from Old Faithful. Gardiner puts you 2 hours away.
Local tip: The pull-off on the canyon road above town overlooks the Yellowstone River valley and gives a framing of the Roosevelt Arch that the parking lot below completely misses. In January and February, binoculars from that overlook spot wolves in the river corridor more reliably than most guided tours.

Cooke City, MT

Four miles from the best wildlife road in North America.

Budget $70-$200/night

Cooke City sits at 7,651 feet under the Beartooth Range with one main road, under 150 year-round residents, and the most direct access to the Lamar Valley of any gateway. The Northeast Entrance is 4 miles from the main strip on US-212. The Lamar Valley is 20 miles inside the gate, about 30 minutes from your door. No other base gets you this close to wolf country. In summer the Beartooth Highway opens east of town toward Red Lodge, Montana, climbing to 10,947 feet and crossing some of the highest paved road in North America before descending into the Clark's Fork canyon. That drive alone is worth a half day. In winter the Beartooth closes and Cooke City becomes accessible only from the west through the park, requiring a loop through Mammoth and Tower Junction. That loop is spectacular in snow. Main Street has cabin operations, two bars, and a general store. Do not expect cell service or reliable internet. The elevation keeps snow year-round in the high country above town. This is the right choice if wildlife photography or backcountry hiking is your primary reason for being in the region. There are perhaps 200 total beds in the entire town, so book as soon as you know your dates.

Walk times
  • Northeast Entrance Gate 8 min
  • Lamar Valley start 30 min
  • Tower Fall 45 min
  • Mammoth Hot Springs 90 min
Skip if: You need cell service, restaurant variety, or fast access to Old Faithful which is 2.5 hours away. Also skip April through mid-May when the Northeast Entrance road may still be closed.
Local tip: The Silver Gate pullout 3 miles west of Cooke City on US-212 is the most productive wolf-watching spot in the corridor and most visitors drive past it without stopping. The high country on the Beartooth Plateau above town has grizzlies feeding on whitebark pine nuts from late August through October, visible from the road with patience.

Cody, WY

A real Western town. 52 miles from the East Entrance, worth every one.

Mid-range $90-$300/night

Sheridan Avenue is the spine of Cody, lined with Western storefronts from 12th Street to the edge of downtown, 52 miles east of the Yellowstone East Entrance on US-14/16/20. That drive takes one hour through Shoshone National Forest and the North Fork Shoshone River canyon, and the canyon sections are scenic enough to justify the extra distance over other gateways. Cody is a town of 10,000 people with a functioning economy beyond tourism. The Buffalo Bill Center of the West on Sheridan Avenue is the best Western history museum in the United States. Budget four hours minimum. There is a Plains Indian Museum, a firearms museum, a natural history wing, and a dedicated Buffalo Bill gallery. Plan it for a weather day or an arrival evening. The nightly rodeo at Stampede Park on 16th Street runs every single night from June 1 through August 31 at 8 PM without exception. Restaurants on Sheridan Avenue and 12th Street are genuinely good by any standard, not just gateway-town standards. The East Entrance gives you Yellowstone Lake in 1.5 hours and the Hayden Valley in under 2 hours. Old Faithful from Cody is 2.5 hours, which works for one long day but not for daily thermal basin access.

Best for
Western history enthusiastsfamilies with older kidstravelers combining Yellowstone with Cody as a destinationthose wanting full-service restaurants
Walk times
  • East Entrance Gate 60 min
  • Buffalo Bill Center of the West 8 min
  • Yellowstone Lake shore 90 min
  • North Fork Shoshone Canyon start 15 min
Skip if: Geyser access is your daily priority. The 2.5-hour drive to Old Faithful from Cody each way adds 5 hours of driving to every thermal basin day.
Local tip: The seats on the east side of the Stampede Park grandstand put the sun behind you for the last two hours of the 8 PM rodeo, which matters when it is 90 degrees outside. The Shoshone River public fishing access on Road 6NN east of town is a 10-minute drive from Sheridan Avenue and almost never crowded even in peak summer.

Jackson, WY

The expensive option. Worth it if Grand Teton is also on your list.

Mid-range $150-$600/night

Town Square sits at the center of Jackson, marked by four antler arches at the corners of Broadway and Cache Street. Everything you need is within four blocks. Jackson is 55 miles from Yellowstone's South Entrance via US-191 through Grand Teton National Park, about 60 minutes. That drive passes Oxbow Bend, Snake River Overlook, and the Teton front range. You are doing a two-park trip whether you planned to or not, which is either a bonus or irrelevant depending on your itinerary. Jackson is the most expensive Yellowstone gateway by a meaningful margin. Summer lodging on Broadway runs $300 to $500 a night on average. What you get is a real mountain town with restaurants worth traveling to on Millward Street and Broadway, a ski resort 12 miles up the road at Teton Village, and the full Wyoming mountain experience. The South Entrance gives you access to Yellowstone Lake and the Hayden Valley, the summer rival to the Lamar for bison and bear density. Go in late May or late September when Grand Teton crowds are thinner and Jackson prices drop 30 percent. The town in those windows is genuinely one of the best places to be in the American West.

Best for

Walk times
  • Town Square antler arches 2 min
  • South Entrance to Yellowstone 60 min
  • Grand Teton National Park boundary 20 min
  • Snake River Overlook 30 min
Skip if: You are on a tight budget or Yellowstone is your only destination. Paying Jackson prices for a 2-hour daily drive to Old Faithful and back is a poor trade.
Local tip: The Cache Street overflow lot behind Town Square fills by 9 AM in July, so park instead at the Recreation Center on Cache Street four blocks north, which is free and almost always available. The shop and dining complex at Moose Junction on Teton Park Road, 12 miles north, has a wine shop and open-air pizza deck with a direct Teton view that most Jackson restaurants charge considerably more to approximate.

Mammoth Hot Springs (Inside the Park)

Wake up inside Yellowstone. Book 6 to 12 months early or forget it.

Mid-range $100-$400/night

Staying inside Yellowstone changes the trip. Mammoth Hot Springs sits 5 miles south of the North Entrance at Gardiner, at 6,239 feet, and the travertine terrace formations begin right at the edge of the accommodation cluster. The Lower Terraces boardwalk is a 10-minute walk from the lodging area near the Albright Visitor Center on Grand Loop Road. Upper Terrace Drive begins half a mile away off Grand Loop Road. At 6 AM in summer, when park visitors from West Yellowstone and Gardiner are still on the entrance road, you walk to Liberty Cap and Palette Spring in near silence. That early access is the entire reason to stay inside the park. The Mammoth area is open year-round and the north entrance road stays plowed. Elk graze between buildings and on the lawns surrounding the accommodation area from September through winter without exaggeration. Wolves and bears have been seen from the accommodation area in winter. Dining is limited to a hotel dining room and a quick-service grill, so pack food for lunches in the park. The Grand Loop Road puts Norris Geyser Basin 30 minutes away, Tower Fall 18 minutes, and the Lamar Valley start 45 minutes. Book 6 to 12 months in advance through the NPS reservation portal. Summer dates hit zero availability by February every year.

Best for

Walk times
  • Lower Terraces boardwalk 10 min
  • Albright Visitor Center 5 min
  • North Entrance at Gardiner 10 min
  • Tower-Roosevelt Junction 18 min
Skip if: You want restaurant variety, easy last-minute booking, or plan daily visits to Old Faithful. Mammoth sits in the north corner and Old Faithful is 80 miles and 2 hours away.
Local tip: The terrace boardwalks before 7 AM and after 7 PM in summer have almost no crowds and the steam light on the mineral formations at those hours is the best photography window of the entire day. Elk calving happens in the accommodation area in late May and the park service ropes off sections of lawn for weeks, meaning your path to the parking lot may change without warning.

What is the best area to stay for first-time Yellowstone visitors?

West Yellowstone wins for first-timers. You are 0.3 miles from the West Entrance Gate, 50 minutes from Old Faithful, and 40 minutes from Grand Prismatic Spring on Firehole Lake Drive. The town has enough on Canyon Street and Yellowstone Avenue to cover everything you need without wasting half a day on driving.

Which Yellowstone gateway is closest to Old Faithful?

The West Entrance at West Yellowstone is 31 miles from Old Faithful, about 50 minutes via US-20 and the Grand Loop Road. The South Entrance through Grand Teton from Jackson adds 75 miles and roughly 1.5 hours. The North Entrance at Gardiner is 80 miles away and requires a 2-hour loop through Mammoth and the full western road.

Is staying inside Yellowstone at Mammoth Hot Springs worth the booking effort?

Yes, if you book 6 to 12 months ahead through the NPS reservation portal, because summer dates hit zero availability by February every year. The Lower Terraces boardwalk is a 10-minute walk from the lodging area, and you are on the Grand Loop Road before any gateway visitor has eaten breakfast. The trade-off is two dining options versus the full range available in any gateway town.

How far is Jackson from Yellowstone and is it worth staying there?

Jackson is 55 miles from the South Entrance via US-191 through Grand Teton National Park, about 60 minutes. If your itinerary includes Oxbow Bend, Snake River Overlook, and Grand Teton, driving from Jackson means you hit those stops on the way in and out every day. If your only goal is Yellowstone's thermal features, West Yellowstone cuts 90 minutes off your daily round-trip drive.

How far in advance should I book Yellowstone area lodging?

Book West Yellowstone and Gardiner accommodations by January for July and August dates. Inside-the-park lodging at Mammoth, Old Faithful, Canyon, and Grant opens for summer reservations in May of the prior year through the NPS booking portal. September and October are far easier to book last-minute and prices drop 20 to 40 percent after Labor Day.

What is the best area for wildlife watching near Yellowstone?

Cooke City gives the most direct access to the Lamar Valley, 20 miles inside the Northeast Entrance and 30 minutes from town. The Lamar Valley holds the highest concentration of wolves, bison, and grizzly bears accessible by road in the lower 48 states. Gardiner is the second choice, giving year-round access via the North Entrance and placing you at the Lamar Valley in 45 minutes through the northern range.
