01

West Yellowstone, Montana

The most convenient gateway, with the crowds to prove it

Mid-range $80-$280/night

Canyon Street is the beating heart of this gateway town, lined with diners, outfitters, and souvenir shops. The west entrance sits at the end of Yellowstone Avenue, literally two blocks from most hotels. You are 14 miles from Madison Junction, 30 miles from Old Faithful, and 7 miles from Grand Prismatic Spring. Summer traffic on Canyon Street gets heavy by 8am, so plan early mornings. Hotels cluster on Firehole Avenue and Gibbon Avenue too. Dozens of options from basic motels to newer chain hotels. This is the easiest base for first-timers hitting multiple areas of the park.

Best for
First-time visitorsfamiliesanyone wanting maximum dining and shopping within walking distance
Walk times
  • 14 miles to Madison Junction 20 min
  • 30 miles to Old Faithful 35 min

Local tip: Get to the west entrance gate before 7am and you will have the Madison Canyon basically to yourself for the first hour. By 9am the road is bumper-to-bumper.

Gardiner, Montana

The only year-round gateway, and genuinely underrated

Budget $65-$200/night

Park Street runs through this small Montana town right up to the Roosevelt Arch, the original stone gateway built in 1903. Gardiner is 5 miles from Mammoth Hot Springs and the only Yellowstone entrance open 365 days a year. Main Street and Scott Street hold most accommodations, with the Yellowstone River running alongside. Fewer dining options than West Yellowstone but noticeably cheaper rates. The north entrance gives fastest access to Lamar Valley, prime wolf and bear territory. Smaller crowds at this gate compared to the west side. Ideal for fall and winter visits when other entrances close.

Best for
Wildlife photographersoff-season visitorsbudget travelersanyone targeting wolves in Lamar Valley
Walk times
  • 5 miles to Mammoth Hot Springs 8 min
  • 45 miles to Lamar Valley 50 min
  • 29 miles to Tower Falls 35 min
Skip if: You need lots of restaurant choices or want to be close to Old Faithful and the geyser basins
Local tip: The Yellowstone Mine restaurant inside the Best Western by the river serves the best prime rib in town. Cheap, massive portions, and locals eat there instead of tourists.

Old Faithful Village (Inside the Park)

Wake up next to the world's most famous geyser

Mid-range $130-$500/night

There is nothing like walking out your door 50 feet from a world-famous geyser. Old Faithful Inn, built in 1903, is a National Historic Landmark with hand-hewn log construction and a stone fireplace you can sit beside for hours. Snow Lodge is the modern alternative 300 yards away. The village boardwalk connects 11 geysers you can walk before 9am before day crowds arrive. Grand Prismatic Spring is 4 miles north on the road. Book 12 months ahead for peak summer dates or you will find nothing available. No grocery stores inside, ATMs limited, cell service unreliable but peaceful.

Best for
Bucket-list seekerscouplesvisitors who want to skip the frantic gateway town drive entirely
Walk times
  • Old Faithful Geyser 2 min
  • 4 miles to Grand Prismatic Spring 10 min
  • 17 miles to West Thumb Geyser Basin 20 min
Skip if: You need reliable cell service, last-minute flexibility, or are traveling on a tight budget
Local tip: Dinner reservations at Old Faithful Inn fill by noon on busy days. Walk in and ask about bar seating instead. Same menu, no reservation needed, and the view into the lobby is actually better from the bar.

Cody, Wyoming

A real Western town, 52 miles from the east entrance

Budget $70-$220/night

Sheridan Avenue cuts through downtown Cody, a working Western town 52 miles east of Yellowstone's east entrance. The Buffalo Bill Center of the West on Sheridan Avenue is one of the best museum complexes in America, worth a half-day on its own. Hotels cluster along 8th Street and the main corridor, with strong value compared to closer gateway towns. The drive to the east entrance through Shoshone Canyon and past Buffalo Bill Reservoir is genuinely spectacular, arguably the most scenic approach to the park. Fewer tourists than West Yellowstone, better local restaurants, and rodeo every night June through August at Stampede Park.

Best for
Western culture enthusiaststravelers combining Yellowstone with other Wyoming highlightsfamilies wanting evening activities
Walk times
  • 52 miles to East Entrance 55 min
  • 75 miles to Yellowstone Lake 80 min
  • miles to Old Faithful (2 hour drive) 115 min
Skip if: You want to maximize time inside the park or are only visiting for one or two days
Local tip: The Irma Hotel on Sheridan Avenue was built by Buffalo Bill Cody in 1902. Breakfast there costs the same as any diner in town and the cherry wood bar was a gift from Queen Victoria.

What is the best area to stay near Yellowstone for first-timers?

West Yellowstone is the default answer for good reason. You are two blocks from the west entrance, Canyon Street has 20-plus restaurants and outfitters, and you are 30 miles from Old Faithful. The trade-off is summer crowds. Book on Firehole Avenue or Gibbon Avenue for slightly quieter options that are still walkable to everything you need.

How far in advance should I book Yellowstone lodging?

For inside-the-park lodging like Old Faithful Inn, book 12 months out. Reservations open in May for the following year and the best rooms vanish in hours. Gateway town hotels in West Yellowstone and Gardiner can often be booked 2-3 months ahead for summer, but July Fourth week and mid-August require 4-plus months minimum.

Is staying inside Yellowstone National Park worth it?

Yes, if your budget allows and you book early. Old Faithful Inn puts you at the geyser before day crowds arrive by 9am, which is a completely different experience. Snow Lodge is the better value inside the park. The catch: no cell service, limited dining, and zero flexibility if you did not plan ahead. For a single special night, it is worth it.

What is the cheapest place to stay near Yellowstone?

Gardiner, Montana has the lowest average nightly rates of any Yellowstone gateway, starting around $65-80 in shoulder season. Main Street motels are simple but clean. Cody, Wyoming is also strong value at $70-90 for budget rooms, though you add a 55-minute drive to the east entrance. Both beat West Yellowstone rates by $20-40 per night in peak summer.
