Yosemite Valley

No-car convenience, maximum drama

Mid-range $150-$600/night

Staying in the Valley puts you on Northside Drive with Half Dome overhead and Yosemite Falls audible from your room. Two options exist inside the Valley: Ahwahnee Hotel and Yosemite Valley Lodge, both booked through yosemite.com. Free shuttles run year-round between stops 1 through 13, so a car is optional after parking. Winter crowds thin sharply after New Year's. Mirror Lake trail becomes a flat snowshoe. Ice skating at Half Dome Village runs December through February when conditions allow. The tradeoff: Valley floor averages 30 inches of annual snow and Northside Drive can close briefly after storms.

Best for
First-timersnon-driversanyone wanting Half Dome views from their pillow and zero car stress
Walk times
  • Yosemite Falls trailhead 5 min
  • Valley Visitor Center 8 min
  • Happy Isles trailhead 20 min
Skip if: You are watching your budget. A basic Valley Lodge room in December rarely falls below $150.
Local tip: Ahwahnee books out 13 months ahead for holiday weeks. Valley Lodge is the affordable Valley option at $150-200 in slow January weeks. Book through yosemite.com directly, not third-party sites, to avoid cancellation headaches.

Wawona

Victorian charm, sequoia access, genuine quiet

Mid-range $100-$250/night

Wawona sits 27 miles south of the Valley on Wawona Road (Highway 41), at 4,000 feet elevation. The 1879 Wawona Hotel is the only in-park lodging here, with white Victorian buildings around a lawn dusted with snow in January. Chilnualna Falls Road leads to a trailhead 0.4 miles from the hotel where falls run hard all winter. Mariposa Grove is 2 miles south, free to snowshoe with no permit required in winter. Pioneer Yosemite History Center is a 5-minute walk. Wawona Road rarely closes in winter, making it the most reliable approach from Fresno and Southern California.

Best for
History enthusiastsfamilies targeting Mariposa Grovevisitors arriving from Los Angeles or Fresno
Walk times
  • Wawona Meadow Loop trailhead 2 min
  • Pioneer Yosemite History Center 5 min
  • Chilnualna Falls trailhead 8 min
Skip if: You want daily Valley access. It is a 45-minute drive each way, which compounds over a multi-day trip.
Local tip: Book the Wawona Hotel's Thomas Hill Lounge for a drink after Mariposa Grove. The 1902 bar still has its original wood counter. Check nps.gov/yose road conditions daily during storm weeks since Wawona Road occasionally closes for plowing.

El Portal

Lowest elevation, most reliable winter road access

Mid-range $80-$180/night

El Portal sits 14 miles west of the Valley on Highway 140, at just 2,000 feet elevation. Cedar Lodge and Yosemite View Lodge both front the Merced River canyon directly on Highway 140. At this elevation, heavy snow is rare and Highway 140 closes less than any other park approach route. Drive time to the Valley floor is 20-25 minutes. There is no walkability to park features. Yosemite View Lodge has an indoor pool, worth more than expected after a cold day on the trail. A car is mandatory from here. Midweek rates drop below $100 in January.

Best for
Budget travelersanyone nervous about snow drivingrepeat visitors who want an affordable base camp
Walk times
  • Merced River riverside access 2 min
  • El Portal Market (groceries) 5 min
  • National Park boundary sign on Highway 140 8 min
Skip if: You want to walk anywhere useful. Everything requires a 20-minute drive minimum from El Portal.
Local tip: Highway 140 follows the Merced River canyon and Caltrans treats it as a priority clearance route. It has the best winter closure record of all three main park approaches. Check quickmap.dot.ca.gov before each morning departure.

Groveland

Gold Rush town, cheapest rates, Big Oak Flat access

Budget $70-$160/night

Groveland sits on Main Street (Highway 120) 25 miles west of the Big Oak Flat entrance. It is a real town with restaurants, a grocery store, and the Groveland Hotel built in 1849. Pine Mountain Lake Drive leads to vacation rental cabins with full kitchens, cutting food costs significantly over hotel stays. Big Oak Flat Road stays open most winters. Drive time to Valley floor is 45-50 minutes. Groups and families find Groveland the most flexible base: rentals sleep up to 8, you cook your own meals, and nightly rates fall below $70 per person in January.

Best for
Groupsfamiliesbudget travelers wanting a full kitchen and bedroom space
Walk times
  • Groveland Hotel lobby bar 1 min
  • Iron Door Saloon (est. 1852) 3 min
  • Pine Mountain Lake trailhead 10 min
Skip if: You are traveling solo or as a couple and want atmosphere inside the park itself
Local tip: The Iron Door Saloon on Main Street claims to be California's oldest bar. Stop for a beer on the way back from the park. Check nps.gov/yose road conditions for Big Oak Flat Road before each morning since it closes after heavy overnight snowfall.

Is Yosemite open in winter?

Yes. Yosemite Valley, Wawona, and El Portal stay open year-round. Tioga Road (Highway 120 east through the park) closes from approximately November through late May. Glacier Point Road closes after the first major snowfall, usually November. Valley floor, Mariposa Grove, and the Highway 140 and 41 entrance corridors remain accessible. Check nps.gov/yose for current road status before you leave, especially the morning after a storm.

Do you need chains or 4WD to drive to Yosemite in winter?

Frequently, yes. California law requires chains or cables when Caltrans posts chain control on Highway 120, 140, and 41. AWD and 4WD with snow tires can be exempt on some controls but not all. Carry chains regardless. Rental chain kits cost $30-60 at stores in Groveland, Mariposa, and El Portal. Fitting them takes about 20 minutes the first time. Monitor Caltrans Quickmap at quickmap.dot.ca.gov for active controls before each driving day.

What is the cheapest way to stay near Yosemite in winter?

Groveland and El Portal offer the lowest rates, with rooms from $70-80 in January midweek. Wawona Hotel rooms start around $100. Yosemite Valley Lodge runs $150 minimum. Vacation rentals in Groveland and Mariposa sleep 4-8 people and cut the per-person cost dramatically. January is the slowest month and the cheapest of the year. Book directly with El Portal properties since they often have rates below what third-party sites show.

Which area has the lowest road closure risk in winter?

El Portal via Highway 140 is the most reliable. The Merced River canyon keeps the road at just 2,000 feet and Caltrans prioritizes it for clearing. Highway 41 from Fresno to Wawona also has a solid record. Highway 120 closes most frequently after storms, both from the west (Big Oak Flat) and east (Tioga). If your trip cannot flex a day for closures, book El Portal or Groveland on the Highway 140 or 120 west approaches.
