Where to Stay Guide

Where to Stay in Yosemite Valley

All four options sit inside the valley. The difference is which granite wall you wake up facing and how far you walk to the trailhead.

How far in advance do you need to book lodging in Yosemite Valley?

Book 6 to 7 months ahead for summer. The Yosemite reservation system opens on a rolling 7-month window, and the Ahwahnee and Valley Lodge for July and August sell out within minutes of opening at 7am Pacific. Housekeeping Camp and Half Dome Village tent cabins open in December for the following summer and go almost as fast. Shoulder months like April, May, September, and October need at least 3 months advance booking. Same-day cancellations occasionally open up on the park's recreation.gov page.

Is it worth staying inside Yosemite Valley instead of outside the park?

Yes, for most visitors. The day-use vehicle reservation required April through October does not guarantee parking. Staying inside means you park once, use the free valley shuttle, and skip the 45 to 90 minute morning traffic backup from El Portal on Highway 140 or from Big Oak Flat on Highway 120. Outside options in El Portal shave 20 minutes from the drive but add commute stress every single day. If budget is the only concern, El Portal motels run $150 to $250 with no reservation stress.

Which area is best for hiking the Mist Trail to Vernal Fall?

Half Dome Village is the closest base. Happy Isles trailhead, where the Mist Trail begins, is a 10-minute walk from the tent cabins. From Valley Lodge you take the shuttle, about 15 minutes. From the Ahwahnee it is a 12-minute shuttle ride or 25-minute walk. The Mist Trail gains 1,000 feet in 1.5 miles to Vernal Fall. Start before 7am in June and July to beat the crowds and get the best light on the waterfall, which sprays the trail heavily through early summer.

What is the cheapest way to sleep inside Yosemite Valley?

Housekeeping Camp starts at $130 per night and includes running water, cooking facilities, and river access. Half Dome Village tent cabins run $130 to $160 and include bedding but share bathroom blocks. Both book up months ahead. Camp 4, the only first-come-first-served campground in the valley, costs $10 per person per night but fills before 8am daily from May through September. Arrive by 7am or send one person to hold a spot while the rest of your group parks.
