01

Yosemite Valley

Best location in the park. Book 5 months out or you will miss it.

Budget $0-$0/night

Northside Drive and Southside Drive form a one-way loop through the valley floor and every major trailhead is within this 7-mile stretch. Yosemite Valley Lodge sits steps from the Lower Yosemite Fall trail. Half Dome Village (formerly Curry Village) clusters canvas tent cabins near the Mist Trail trailhead at the east end. The Ahwahnee, opened in 1927 on Ahwahnee Drive, delivers dining room grandeur starting around $450. Parking inside the valley is genuinely unpleasant from May through October. Use the free Valley Shuttle instead. Reservations open at 7am Pacific exactly 366 days ahead and peak dates sell out within minutes.

Best for
First-time visitorshikers who want early starts on Half Dome permitsanyone targeting Mist Trail before 7am crowds
Walk times
  • Lower Yosemite Fall trailhead from Valley Lodge 8 min
  • Mist Trail start from Half Dome Village 5 min
  • Yosemite Village Visitor Center shuttle stop 12 min
Skip if: You need flexibility, hate planning, or are arriving in summer without a reservation locked 5-plus months out
Local tip: Valley Lodge rooms facing the meadow sell first. If you see them open, book immediately regardless of price.

El Portal

14 miles out, Merced River views, $60 cheaper per night than in-park.

Budget $0-$0/night

El Portal sits along Highway 140 on the Merced River, 14 miles west of Yosemite Valley via the Arch Rock entrance. Two hotels dominate: Cedar Lodge and Yosemite View Lodge, both on the river with balcony rooms facing the water. Yosemite View Lodge averages $190 to $240 per night in summer. The drive into the valley follows the canyon and takes about 30 minutes. No shuttle connects El Portal to the park so a car is mandatory. That said, you skip the valley parking ordeal entirely: drive in early, park at day-use lots near trailheads, and leave before afternoon traffic builds.

Best for
Budget-conscious visitors wanting river viewsanyone who missed in-park reservationstravelers who prefer driving in early
Walk times
  • Merced River swimming access from Cedar Lodge 2 min
  • El Portal Market and post office on Highway 140 5 min
  • Yosemite View Lodge restaurant from Cedar Lodge 12 min
Skip if: You want trailheads before 8am without a 30-minute drive, or you do not have a car
Local tip: Rooms on the river side of Yosemite View Lodge cost $20 to $30 more. The Merced River at night makes it worth it.

Fish Camp

South entrance access. Best base for Mariposa Grove first thing in the morning.

Budget $0-$0/night

Fish Camp sits on Highway 41 exactly 2 miles south of Yosemite's South Entrance at roughly 5,000 feet elevation. Tenaya Lodge dominates: a full-service resort with three pools, a spa, two restaurants, and shuttle service to the south entrance. Summer rates run $280 to $480 per night. The Big Creek Inn on Big Creek Road offers 5 rooms in a quieter B&B format from around $195. Six miles north sits the Wawona Hotel inside the park, built in 1879 and cheaper than Tenaya at around $200 per night. If Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias is your priority, no area puts you closer.

Best for
Families wanting resort amenitiesearly-morning Mariposa Grove accessvisitors driving up from Los Angeles via Highway 41
Walk times
  • Tenaya Lodge pool from main lobby 3 min
  • Convenience store on Highway 41 5 min
  • Big Creek swimming spot on Big Creek Road 10 min
Skip if: Yosemite Valley and Half Dome are your only goals. The drive from Fish Camp to the valley takes 45 minutes each way.
Local tip: Tenaya Lodge's free shuttle to the south entrance runs hourly from 7am. Use it to skip the south entrance parking fee and arrive before the sequoia grove crowds build.

Groveland

Cheapest gateway. Highway 120 direct to Tioga Pass and Tuolumne Meadows.

Budget $0-$0/night

Groveland is the last real town on Highway 120 before the Big Oak Flat entrance, 25 miles west of the park gate. Main Street holds a handful of restaurants and the Hotel Charlotte, built in 1921, with 8 rooms from $130. The Evergreen Lodge sits 7 miles closer to the park on Evergreen Road, with forest cabins from $190. Budget motels in town run $90 to $115 in shoulder season. Groveland makes the most sense in summer when Tioga Road is open: the Big Oak Flat entrance puts you directly on route to Tuolumne Meadows at 8,600 feet and Tenaya Lake.

Best for
Repeat Yosemite visitors targeting Tuolumne Meadowsbudget travelersanyone who wants a quiet small-town base with a real bar
Walk times
  • Main Street restaurants from Hotel Charlotte 2 min
  • Iron Door Saloon from Hotel Charlotte 3 min
  • Carlon Falls trailhead from Evergreen Lodge 8 min
Skip if: Tioga Road is closed (late October through May). Yosemite Valley is still 45 miles and over an hour from Groveland.
Local tip: Carlon Falls trailhead starts just off Evergreen Road, 1.5 miles from the Evergreen Lodge. One of the least-crowded waterfall hikes in the Yosemite area and best in May and June.

Is it worth staying inside Yosemite Valley?

Yes, if you book early enough to get it. Staying in the valley means zero commute: you are at the Mist Trail in 5 minutes from Half Dome Village and at Yosemite Falls in 8 minutes from Valley Lodge. That head start matters in summer when trailhead parking fills by 8am. The Ahwahnee starts at $450 per night. Tent cabins at Half Dome Village start at $150. If neither is available, El Portal 14 miles away on Highway 140 is the smartest fallback.

How far in advance should I book Yosemite lodging?

For in-park lodging, book exactly 366 days in advance at 7am Pacific. That is when reservations open for Yosemite Valley Lodge and The Ahwahnee. Summer weekends sell out that same morning. For El Portal and Fish Camp, 3 to 6 weeks ahead is usually enough except July 4 weekend. Groveland is most forgiving: you can often book 7 to 10 days out even in August at Hotel Charlotte or budget motels on Main Street.

What is the cheapest area to stay near Yosemite?

Groveland on Highway 120 is consistently the cheapest gateway, with budget motel rooms from $90 to $110 per night. El Portal runs $130 to $170 for basic rooms at Cedar Lodge. The drive time difference between Groveland and El Portal to reach Yosemite Valley is only about 15 minutes. Pick Groveland if you are budget-focused and plan to use Highway 120 to access Tuolumne Meadows via Tioga Road in summer.

Can I visit Yosemite without a car from nearby gateway towns?

From within Yosemite Valley, yes: the free Valley Shuttle connects all lodges and trailheads. From El Portal and Groveland you need a car. Tenaya Lodge in Fish Camp runs its own shuttle to the south entrance covering the last 2 miles to the park. YARTS buses run seasonally from Merced, Mammoth Lakes, and Sonora but service from gateway towns is limited and schedules change annually. Check yarts.com before booking a car-free trip.
