Rooms are simple but clean, and the owner is genuinely helpful with local tips. Breakfast is included and surprisingly good, with local bakes and saltfish most mornings. Cuffie River Nature Retreat
This small eco-retreat is tucked into the rainforest hills near Runnemede in Tobago, far from the beach crowds. Cabins are basic but comfortable, and the surrounding birdlife is extraordinary, with over 100 species spotted on the property. Meals are cooked fresh using local produce and the portions are generous. It is completely off the tourist trail and that is exactly the point. Bring repellent and an open mind.

Pax Guest House
Pax is run by the Benedictine monastery on the slopes of Mount Saint Benedict above Tunapuna in central Trinidad. The setting is unlike anything else in the country, with cool mountain air, forest trails, and extraordinary birdwatching right outside your room. Accommodation is simple and monastic in character but scrupulously clean. Meals are communal and the food is wholesome and homemade. It attracts naturalists and people wanting genuine quiet, not resort amenities.

Seahorse Inn
Seahorse Inn sits right on Man O War Bay in Charlotteville, at the far northeastern tip of Tobago away from the main tourist corridor. The inn has direct beach access and some of the best snorkeling in Tobago just a short swim from the shore. Rooms are tastefully decorated with local wood and open directly onto garden or sea views. The kitchen produces excellent food focused on fresh catch brought in by local fishermen daily. Getting here requires effort but the reward is a genuinely unspoiled corner of the island.

Banwari Eco Experience
Banwari Eco Experience is a boutique luxury property near San Fernando in south Trinidad, built around an archaeological site that is among the oldest in the Caribbean. The design is immersive and intelligent, blending contemporary architecture with the surrounding wetland and forest landscape. Rooms are large, thoughtfully furnished, and genuinely private. Magdalena Grand sits on the Lowlands coast of Tobago adjacent to a golf course, with its own stretch of beach and large pool complex. It is one of the bigger resorts on the island and handles families well, with organized activities and enough space to not feel crowded. Port of Spain Neighborhoods: Where to Stay
Woodbrook is the most practical neighborhood for most visitors. Ariapita Avenue runs through its middle and is lined with restaurants and bars. It is safe to walk at night between establishments. Hotels like Courtyard on Wrightson Road are a short taxi ride. The Cascade residential area to the northeast is quiet, more suburban, and feels removed from the city buzz.
St. Clair offers the Savannah on your doorstep and the Magnificent Seven mansions within walking range. The Carlton Savannah hotel overlooks the park directly. Belmont is more local and rougher, good for budget travelers who want to move with confidence. Avoid hotels near the downtown Independence Square corridor for anything other than pure transit convenience.
Tobago Beach Guide: Which One to Choose
Pigeon Point is the Instagram beach. Clear turquoise water, white sand, and a small beach bar. Entry fee is TTD 20. Store Bay is free, grittier, and has excellent vendors selling shark and bake. Englishman's Bay on the north coast takes 40 minutes from Crown Point but rewards with empty sand and no resort development in sight.
Castara is a small fishing village with a black-sand bay and several guesthouses. Surfers head to Mount Irvine Bay and Stonehaven Bay. The calmer Caribbean side around Lowlands and Black Rock suits families and anyone who wants flat water for swimming. The Atlantic-facing northeast coast, Speyside and King's Bay, has strong currents and is best for experienced snorkelers and divers rather than casual beach days.
Carnival: How to Do It Right
J'ouvert Monday at 4am is the raw version of Carnival: paint, mud, oil, and soca bass notes rattling every building downtown. Mas bands parade on the Tuesday with elaborate feathered costumes. The Queen's Park Savannah hosts the competition stage. Secure a costume through a band like Tribe, Bliss, or Island People by September for the following February. Costs run USD 180 to 600 depending on position in the band.
Accommodation strategy: book in St. Clair or Woodbrook and walk to events. A shared Carnival party house is a local tradition and often cheaper than hotels, ask Port of Spain locals on social media. The week before Carnival has free concerts and fetes across the city. Pan Around the Neck competition at Savannah in January is the most underrated Carnival event and completely free.

Do not rent a car in Trinidad unless you are going to the north coast beaches or the Northern Range. Port of Spain traffic is terrible and parking is expensive and scarce. Route taxis radiate from City Gate, TTD 5 to 10 per ride, and are safe and reliable during daylight hours. For nights, use Trini Taxi app or call a licensed radio taxi.
In Tobago, a rental car unlocks everything. The north coast road to Speyside and Charlotteville is essential if you want to see beyond Crown Point. Rates from Skyway or Baird's start at TTD 280 per day. Route taxis from Scarborough to most villages cost TTD 8 to 15 and run until early evening. Crown Point to Scarborough by taxi costs about TTD 60 to 80.
How to Do Both Islands in 7 Days
Day 1: Arrive Piarco, check in Woodbrook or St. Clair, recover. Day 2: Port of Spain food tour, Savannah walk, Ariapita Avenue dinner. Day 3: Asa Wright Nature Centre or Maracas Bay, evening fete. Day 4: Morning ferry or flight to Tobago, check in Crown Point. Day 5: Pigeon Point morning, Store Bay lunch, Speyside drive afternoon. Day 6: Full day diving or Englishman's Bay. The combination of Carnival chaos followed by Tobago calm is the classic Trinidad experience.

Carnival lands in February or March and dominates every aspect of Port of Spain. Hotels in walkable neighborhoods sell out 6 months ahead. Prices jump 40 to 50 percent. January is the calm before the storm, good weather and normal prices. Tobago is quieter during this period and perfectly pleasant.
April - May
The best window for Trinidad and Tobago. Carnival is over, prices drop, dry season weather holds through May. Leatherback turtles start arriving at Grande Riviere from March. Hotels on both islands are 20 to 30 percent cheaper than Carnival period. Tobago beaches are calm and clear.
June - September
Wet season but manageable. Trinidad sits well south of the hurricane belt. Rain comes in afternoon bursts and clears quickly. Diving in Tobago is still excellent year-round. Leatherback turtle season peaks in June through August at Grande Riviere. Prices are 10 to 15 percent lower than April.
October - December
Rain tapers off by November and December brings the start of the holiday season. Parang music and pastelles appear from October onwards, a genuine cultural marker. Christmas in Port of Spain has real energy. Prices hold steady until mid-December when holiday demand pushes them up again.
