Lower Broadway / SoBro

Rooftop bars that look straight at the neon

Luxury $220-$480/night

SoBro sits just south of Broadway between 4th and 8th Avenue, and this is where the rooftop hotel bars have actually earned their reputation. L27 on top of the Westin and UP on 21c sit high enough that the noise from the honky-tonks below turns into a soundtrack instead of a problem. The Bobby Hotel rooftop has a converted 1956 Scenicruiser bus and live music most nights. You can walk to Bridgestone Arena in 4 minutes for a Predators game, and Nissan Stadium is a 12-minute walk over the Korean Veterans Bridge. Stick to hotels on 4th, 5th, or Demonbreun if you want to sleep before 2am.

Best for
First-timers who want the rooftop bar to be the whole point of the trip
Walk times
  • Broadway honky-tonks 2 min
  • Bridgestone Arena 4 min
  • Ryman Auditorium 7 min
Skip if: You are a light sleeper or you want a calm cocktail without bachelorette parties
Local tip: Book a room facing away from Broadway. Ask for an interior or south-facing room. The pedal taverns blast music until midnight on weekends.

The Gulch

Walkable cocktail bars without the Broadway chaos

Luxury $240-$520/night

The Gulch is six blocks from Broadway but feels like a different city. The Thompson Nashville has L.A. Jackson on its roof, which still pours one of the best Old Fashioneds in town with Belle Meade Bourbon. Bode and the W both have lobby bars that pull a local crowd after work, not just hotel guests. You can walk to Whiskey Row, Kayne Prime, and the Frothy Monkey on 12th Avenue South in under 10 minutes. The neighborhood is flat and well-lit, so walking back at midnight feels safer than most parts of downtown. The 12South shuttle picks up at Pine Street.

Best for
Couples and groups who want serious cocktails over neon shots
Walk times
  • Whiskey Row 3 min
  • Station Inn bluegrass 4 min
  • Broadway 12 min
Skip if: You need to be on Broadway in under 5 minutes
Local tip: L.A. Jackson takes walk-ins on weekdays before 6pm. After that, reserve through the Thompson app or you will wait 45 minutes.

Germantown

Quiet streets, serious whiskey lists

Luxury $180-$360/night

Germantown sits north of the state capitol, and the hotel bar scene here leans toward sit-down whiskey rather than rooftop spectacle. The bar at Germantown Inn keeps a 60-bottle Tennessee whiskey list, and Hutton Hotel's Analog has live acoustic sets most weeknights. You are walking distance to Rolf and Daughters, Butchertown Hall, and City House on 6th Avenue North. Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park is a 5-minute walk for morning coffee. The neighborhood gets quiet after 11pm, which is the point. Lyft to Broadway runs $8 to $12 and takes 6 minutes.

Best for
Travelers in their 30s and 40s who drink whiskey neat
Walk times
  • Rolf and Daughters 4 min
  • Nashville Farmers Market 6 min
  • State Capitol 8 min
Skip if: You want to roll out of the hotel onto Broadway
Local tip: Skip the bachelorette-heavy hotels on 1st Avenue. Stay on 5th or 6th Avenue North closer to Monell's instead.

East Nashville

Indie speakeasy bars across the Cumberland

Mid-range $160-$310/night

East Nashville sits across the Cumberland River and pulls the locals who actually live here. Hotel bars are smaller and weirder. The Russell on Woodland Street runs a former church as a boutique hotel with a basement cocktail bar. Urban Cowboy on East Boscobel has Public House, which makes mezcal drinks better than anything downtown. You can walk to Pearl Diver, Lipstick Lounge, and 3 Crow Bar on Woodland in under 10 minutes. Five Points and Eastland Avenue have the best coffee mornings. Lyft to Broadway runs about $11 and takes 7 minutes over the Woodland Street Bridge.

Best for
Repeat visitors who already did Broadway and want the local side
Walk times
  • Five Points bars 6 min
  • Pearl Diver 4 min
  • Broadway via Lyft 7 min
Skip if: You will be at Bridgestone Arena every night
Local tip: Avoid staying past Gallatin Avenue going north. Stick to the area between Main Street and Eastland for walkability.

Which Nashville hotel has the best rooftop bar?

L27 at the Westin and UP at 21c Museum Hotel are the two locals send out-of-town friends to. L27 has the bigger Broadway view from the 27th floor. UP has better cocktails and a pool. Both are in SoBro within 3 minutes of each other.

Are Broadway hotels too loud to sleep in?

Yes if you book a room facing 2nd, 3rd, or Lower Broadway. The pedal taverns and honky-tonks run until midnight Sunday through Thursday and 3am on weekends. Ask for an interior room or stay one block south on Demonbreun Street to cut the noise by half.

How much do Nashville hotel bars charge for cocktails?

Expect $16 to $22 for a craft cocktail at hotel rooftop bars in SoBro and The Gulch. Germantown and East Nashville hotel bars run $13 to $18. Tennessee whiskey flights at Germantown Inn or Bobby Hotel cost $24 to $40 for three pours.

Can you walk from The Gulch to Broadway?

Yes. It is 12 minutes flat from the Thompson Nashville to Tootsies on Lower Broadway. The walk goes under the railroad bridge on 11th Avenue South. It is well-lit and safe at night, but Lyft costs $7 if you have heels on.
