The Gulch

Walkable luxury between downtown and 12South

Luxury $220-$480/night

The Gulch is a compact, redeveloped pocket south of Broadway with rooftop bars, the famous mural wall on 11th Avenue, and easy walks to both downtown and 12South. You stay on streets like 12th Avenue South and Demonbreun, surrounded by spots like Biscuit Love, Whiskey Kitchen, and Virago. It feels polished without being sterile, and it's quiet at night compared to lower Broadway. Hotels here lean modern and design-forward. If you want a base where you can walk to dinner, ride a scooter to honky-tonks, and skip the worst of the bachelorette chaos, this is it.

Best for
Couplesfood-focused tripsfirst-timers who want quiet nights
Walk times
  • Lower Broadway 8 min
  • 12South 20 min
  • Music City Center 12 min
Skip if: You want to roll out of bed onto Broadway
Local tip: Park the car. The Gulch to Broadway is faster on foot than driving on a Saturday.

Downtown / SoBro

Steps from honky-tonks and the river

Luxury $190-$520/night

Downtown and SoBro (South of Broadway) put you on top of the action. Lower Broadway between 2nd and 5th is the strip of honky-tonks: Tootsie's, Robert's Western World, and the newer multi-floor bars like FGL House. SoBro sits a few blocks south, near the convention center and Ascend Amphitheater, and it's calmer once you cross past Korean Veterans Boulevard. Hotels range from big-box brands to boutique towers. Noise is real on weekends until 3am, especially closer to 2nd Avenue. Pick a higher floor and a hotel with proper windows.

East Nashville

Local food, vintage shops, zero pedal taverns

Mid-range $160-$340/night

East Nashville sits across the Cumberland River and feels like a different city. The action runs along Eastland Avenue, Woodland Street, and the Five Points intersection where you'll find Rosepepper Cantina, Margot Cafe, and Pied Piper Creamery. It's residential, leafy, and full of bungalows and small live music venues like The 5 Spot. You won't find big chain hotels here, mostly boutique stays and short-term rentals. Plan to Uber or drive to downtown, about 8 minutes by car over the Woodland Street Bridge. This is where Nashvillians actually eat dinner.

Germantown

Quiet brick streets and standout restaurants

Luxury $200-$400/night

Germantown is a small historic district just north of downtown, bordered by Jefferson Street and 3rd Avenue North. It's mostly Victorian rowhouses, brick warehouses, and a handful of the best restaurants in the city: Rolf and Daughters, Henrietta Red, City House. The Nashville Farmers' Market sits at its southern edge near Bicentennial Park. Streets are calm, walkable, and a 10-minute walk or 4-minute drive gets you downtown. Hotels here are smaller and feel more residential. It works well if you want food and quiet without giving up proximity to Broadway.

Which Nashville neighborhood is best for first-time visitors?

The Gulch. You're a 10-minute walk from Lower Broadway, but you're not sleeping above the honky-tonks. Restaurants like Adele's and Whiskey Kitchen are within two blocks, and the bachelorette party noise stays mostly on Broadway.

Is it safe to stay downtown Nashville?

Yes, the tourist core from 1st to 5th Avenue along Broadway is heavily policed and walkable day and night. Avoid the area east of 1st Avenue near the riverfront late at night, and skip blocks north of James Robertson Parkway after dark.

How far is the airport from downtown Nashville?

BNA is about 8 miles from Lower Broadway, usually 15 to 25 minutes by car. Uber and Lyft run $25 to $40 depending on time. The WeGo Route 18 bus is $2 but takes 45 minutes with stops.

Should I rent a car in Nashville?

Skip it if you're staying in The Gulch, downtown, or Germantown. Hotel parking runs $40 to $60 per night. Rent one only if you plan day trips to Franklin, Leiper's Fork, or the distilleries in Lynchburg.
