Where to Stay Guide

Where to Stay in Nashville: Music Row or Downtown?

Two neighborhoods, very different vibes. One has live music spilling onto the street at 2am. The other has gold records on the walls and actual quiet. Here is how to pick.

Broadway and the Downtown Core

Live music 24 hours a day, zero sleep

Luxury $180-$380/night

Lower Broadway between 1st and 5th Avenue is the loudest block in Tennessee. Honky-tonks like Tootsie's Orchid Lounge on 5th and Broadway and Robert's Western World on Broadway run free live music from noon to 2am daily. The Ryman Auditorium sits three blocks north on 5th Avenue. Country Music Hall of Fame is a five-minute walk south on Demonbreun Street. Hotels here, including the JW Marriott on Korean Veterans Boulevard and the Omni Nashville on Demonbreun, charge a premium. You pay for the convenience. Walk everywhere. Sleep with earplugs.

Best for
First-timersbachelorette groupsanyone who came specifically for the honky-tonk strip
Walk times
  • Ryman Auditorium 3 min
  • Country Music Hall of Fame 5 min
  • Bridgestone Arena 6 min
Skip if: You go to bed before midnight, hate valet fees, or want a quieter Nashville experience
Local tip: Rooms above the 8th floor facing away from Broadway cut street noise by half. Ask at check-in before they assign you a room.

Music Row

Studio history, zero street noise

Mid-range $110-$240/night

Music Row runs along 16th Avenue South and 17th Avenue South between Grand Avenue and Edgehill Avenue. RCA Studio B at 1611 Roy Acuff Place is where Elvis, Dolly Parton, and the Everly Brothers recorded. The neighborhood feels residential and calm. Broadway is a 1.3-mile walk north up Demonbreun Street or a quick rideshare. Vanderbilt University sits half a mile west. Lunch spots on Music Square East are mostly industry people. Hotels here are limited, but boutique options and short-term rentals offer a quieter base with real neighborhood character and lower prices than downtown.

Best for
Music history fanscouplesrepeat Nashville visitors who have already done the Broadway circuit
Walk times
  • RCA Studio B 4 min
  • Vanderbilt University 12 min
  • Broadway honky-tonks 25 min
Skip if: You want to walk to honky-tonks at night without a rideshare, or you need quick airport access
Local tip: Walk the circular Music Row roundabout at 16th Avenue South and Demonbreun at sunset. The bronze musician statues are worth five minutes of your time.

The Gulch

Upscale, walkable, and halfway between everything

Luxury $190-$420/night

The Gulch sits between downtown and Music Row, roughly bounded by 8th Avenue South, Division Street, and the railroad tracks. It was a railyard two decades ago. Now it holds the 21c Museum Hotel on 11th Avenue South, a dozen high-end restaurants on Pine Street and Demonbreun, and the easiest parking situation in central Nashville. Walk to Broadway in 15 minutes down Demonbreun. Walk to Music Row in 12 minutes the other way. The Gulch is the pragmatic pick: central, quieter than Broadway at night, and better restaurant density than anything near the recording studios.

Best for
Couplesdesign-focused travelersanyone who wants walkability without Broadway chaos
Walk times
  • Broadway honky-tonks 15 min
  • Music Row roundabout 12 min
  • Country Music Hall of Fame 18 min
Skip if: You are on a tight budget or want the full rowdy Nashville experience from your hotel doorstep
Local tip: The Gulch Crossings mural on 11th Avenue South is the most photographed wall in Nashville. Go before 8am to have it to yourself.

East Nashville, 5 Points

Local Nashville, no tourist surcharge

Mid-range $90-$180/night

East Nashville sits across the Cumberland River, about 1.4 miles from Broadway. The 5 Points intersection at Clearview Avenue and McFerrin Avenue is the center. Biscuit Love, Mas Tacos Por Favor, and Fido all operate within three blocks. Shelby Park, one of Nashville's best greenspaces, is a ten-minute walk east on Shelby Avenue. Hotels here are cheaper and options are limited. The real tradeoff: you need a rideshare to reach Broadway, which takes 8 to 12 minutes and costs around $10 each way. Multiple Broadway nights add up fast from this side of the river.

Best for
Budget travelersfood-focused visitorsrepeat visitors who have already done the tourist loop
Walk times
  • Shelby Park entrance 10 min
  • 5 Points coffee shops 5 min
  • Cumberland River greenway 8 min
Skip if: You plan multiple Broadway nights, you do not want to Lyft back late, or you need to reach Music Row easily
Local tip: The East Nashville Farmers Market runs Saturday mornings on Riverside Drive. Local musicians busk there for real, not for tips.

Is it better to stay on Music Row or Downtown Nashville?

Downtown wins if this is your first Nashville trip or you came for the honky-tonks. You roll out of bed and Tootsie's is three minutes away. Music Row wins if you have done Broadway before, care about recording history, or need to sleep before midnight. The two neighborhoods are 1.3 miles apart and a $6 rideshare, so neither locks you out of the other.

How far is Music Row from Broadway in Nashville?

About 1.3 miles, which is a 25-minute walk or an 8-minute rideshare. You can walk it down Demonbreun Street, which has good sidewalks and passes the Country Music Hall of Fame. At night after a few drinks, most people take a rideshare back.

What is the noise level like staying near Broadway?

Loud. Broadway runs live music seven days a week from noon to 2am, and most honky-tonks are open-air. Hotels on Lower Broadway have good soundproofing, but you will hear bass on low floors. Ask for a room above floor 8 facing away from the strip if noise bothers you.

Is The Gulch a good area to stay in Nashville?

Yes, especially for a second Nashville trip. It sits between downtown and Music Row, about 15 minutes walking to either. The 21c Museum Hotel and several upscale options sit on 11th Avenue South and Pine Street. Parking is easier than downtown, and the restaurants on Demonbreun and 12th Avenue South are genuinely better than most tourist-zone spots.
