Aremango Guesthouse
A solid no-frills guesthouse right in central Avarua, walking distance from the main market and shops. Rooms are basic but clean, with ceiling fans and decent beds. The communal kitchen is a nice touch for self-catering travelers watching their budget. Staff are genuinely helpful with island transport advice. Good value for the Cook Islands where accommodation prices run high.

Dine & Surf Hostel Muri
Sitting just back from Muri Beach lagoon, this small hostel offers private rooms as well as dorm-style bunks at genuinely affordable rates. The lagoon itself is a short walk and the property has kayaks guests can borrow for free. Rooms are compact but the outdoor seating area makes up for the lack of indoor space. Breakfasts are simple but filling. One of the few truly budget options on Rarotonga.

Vara's Beach House
A small family-run property on the quiet south coast of Rarotonga, right on the beach at Titikaveka. The lagoon here is shallow and calm, perfect for snorkeling directly in front of the bungalows. Rooms are simply decorated with local fabrics and open onto private terraces facing the water. The owner cooks traditional Cook Islands meals several nights a week at an extra but reasonable cost. Far enough from Avarua to feel genuinely peaceful.

The Rarotongan Beach Resort and Lagoonarium
This is Rarotonga's largest resort, spread along a stretch of west coast beach near Arorangi village. The on-site lagoonarium is a real highlight, giving guests direct access to a protected marine area with abundant fish. Rooms range from standard garden units to overwater-adjacent bungalows, so choose carefully when booking. The pool area is lively and the multiple restaurants cover everything from casual to formal dining. Families and couples both do well here.

Pacific Resort Aitutaki
This boutique resort on Aitutaki island sits right at the edge of one of the most famous lagoons in the South Pacific. Bungalows are spacious and well-appointed, combining local stone and timber with modern comforts. The restaurant produces some of the best food in the outer Cook Islands, with fresh fish featured prominently. Guests can arrange lagoon cruises, snorkeling trips and fishing directly through the resort desk. The journey from Rarotonga requires a short flight but the setting justifies every effort.

Sanctuary Rarotonga on the Beach
Sanctuary sits on the south coast near Vaimaanga and operates as an adults-only property with an emphasis on wellness and tranquility. The beachfront bures are beautifully designed with open-air bathrooms and private outdoor spaces facing the ocean. Yoga sessions, massage treatments and healthy dining options are central to the experience rather than optional extras. The stretch of beach here is quieter than Muri, with fewer day visitors passing through. Couples treating themselves to a honeymoon or anniversary stay consistently rate this among the best in the Cook Islands.

Muri Beach Club Hotel
The location directly on Muri lagoon is hard to beat, with the iconic four motu islands visible from most rooms. Studios and one-bedroom apartments come with kitchenettes, making longer stays practical and affordable. The hotel has its own beach club bar that does solid cocktails and light meals through the day. Muri Night Market is a five-minute walk, giving easy access to cheap local food three nights a week. Staff consistently receive strong feedback for friendliness.

Crown Beach Resort and Spa
Crown Beach sits on a prime stretch of white sand on the west coast and draws a largely couples-focused crowd. The adults-only policy keeps things calm and the beachfront bungalows are genuinely attractive with four-poster beds and outdoor showers. Service is attentive without being intrusive and the spa treatments use locally sourced ingredients. Sunsets viewed from the beach here are consistently excellent given the westward orientation. Book a beachfront unit rather than a garden room for the full experience.

Te Manava Luxury Villas and Spa
Te Manava offers standalone villas rather than hotel rooms, making it one of the better options for families or groups wanting extra space and privacy. Each villa has a full kitchen, living area and private pool or direct lagoon access. The beachfront position on Muri is excellent and the spa is one of the more professional facilities on Rarotonga. Restaurant meals are good but the self-catering setup means you can also cook in and save on dining costs. A rare combination of space and quality at a reasonable relative price for the Cook Islands.

Nên ở đâu tại Cook Islands
Khu vực bạn chọn quan trọng hơn bản thân khách sạn.
Muri Beach or Arorangi: which side of Rarotonga is right for you?
Muri Beach on the east coast is where most travellers end up, and for good reason. The lagoon is calm, walkable, and dotted with motu (small islets) you can kayak to in under 10 minutes. The Muri Night Market on Mamanu Street runs Wednesdays and Fridays and is one of the best cheap eats on the island.
Arorangi on the west coast is quieter and less crowded. Sunsets at Black Rock (Turou Beach) are the best on Rarotonga, and the two resorts here, The Rarotongan and Crown Beach, have the best beach access on the island. You'll need a scooter or car, but the pace is worth it if you want to actually decompress.
The honest guide to Aitutaki: is it really worth it?
Short answer: yes. Aitutaki Lagoon is genuinely one of the most beautiful in the world, and the photos don't lie for once. The One Foot Island (Tapuaetai) day trip runs around $120-150 per person and includes snorkelling, lunch, and enough blue water to ruin every other beach for you permanently.
Getting there means a 45-minute Air Rarotonga flight, which costs roughly $200-280 return. Book it the moment you confirm your trip dates. Flights sell out weeks ahead in July and August. Two nights minimum makes the trip worthwhile. Three is better.
How to avoid getting burned by beachfront hotel claims
Cook Islands has a real 'beachfront' problem. We've seen this mistake hundreds of times: travellers book a 'lagoon view' room and arrive to find a garden hedge between them and the water. Always check whether the hotel has direct beach access or just proximity to it. Muri Beach Club Hotel and Crown Beach Resort are the two properties where 'beachfront' actually means beachfront.
Read the small print on any south coast or inland property. Vara's Beach House in Titikaveka is honest about its setup and delivers genuine value at $105-155/night. It's about 3 minutes walk to Papua Beach, which is some of the best swimming on the island. That's the kind of honest detail that saves your holiday.
Cook Islands transport: scooters, buses, and taxis decoded
The ring road around Rarotonga is 32km and takes about 45 minutes to drive. Scooters ($30-45/day) are the easiest way to explore. The Cook Islands Bus runs clockwise and anticlockwise along the ring road for $5 flat but stops running around 4pm, so factor that in for evenings.
Taxis don't have meters. Agree on a price before you get in. Avarua to Muri Beach runs $25-35 NZD depending on the driver. Most resorts in Arorangi and Muri can arrange scooter hire on-site or point you to the nearest rental. Don't bother with a full car unless you're travelling with kids and luggage.
When to book Cook Islands hotels (and when to wait for deals)
July and August are peak season. School holidays from Australia and New Zealand fill the island, prices jump 30-50% above shoulder rates, and Aitutaki flights become genuinely hard to get. Book Aitutaki accommodation and flights at least 3 months out for this window. Rarotonga has more flexibility but don't push it past 6 weeks out.
April through June is the sweet spot. Dry season has kicked in, temperatures are comfortable at 24-26°C, and you'll find resort rates 15-25% lower than peak. November can work if you avoid late January through March cyclone season. The wet months bring real deals at $95-160/night for places that cost $210+ in July.
Budget travel in Cook Islands: where to stay, where to eat
Cook Islands is not a budget destination by Pacific standards. But it's doable. Stay in Avarua or around Muri on the cheaper end. Aremango Guesthouse at $55-85/night and Dine & Surf Hostel at $65-95/night are your two best honest budget options. Both are in walkable locations with real character.
Food costs are where most budget travellers bleed out. The Punanga Nui Market in Avarua on Saturday mornings has fresh produce and cooked food from $5-12. The Muri Night Market beats any resort restaurant for value. Eating at resorts every meal will double your food budget without doubling the experience.

Khu vực khách sạn tốt nhất của Cook Islands
Rarotonga is where most people base themselves, and honestly, Muri Beach is the right call for first-timers. But if you can stretch to Aitutaki, even for two nights, do it. That lagoon is something else entirely.
Muri Beach 3 khách sạn được xác minh Calm lagoon, great food, the best all-round base on Rarotonga.
Calm lagoon, great food, the best all-round base on Rarotonga.
Muri Beach is the east coast strip that most visitors end up on, and it earns the reputation. The lagoon here is sheltered by a barrier reef and four small motu you can kayak to before breakfast. Mamanu Street runs parallel to the beach and has the best cluster of restaurants and bars outside of Avarua.
The Muri Night Market on Wednesday and Friday evenings is the social heart of the area. Local food stalls, live music, families, backpackers and honeymooners all in the same spot. It's the kind of thing that makes you extend your trip.
Three of our picks sit in this zone: Muri Beach Club Hotel right on the lagoon at $175-280/night, Te Manava Luxury Villas a short walk south at $210-340/night, and Dine & Surf Hostel for those watching their wallet at $65-95/night. The spread here is genuinely useful.

The sunset coast. Quieter, more resort-focused, genuinely beautiful.
Arorangi sits on the west side of Rarotonga where the reef is closer to shore and the beach at Black Rock is one of the best on the island. This is where you come to slow down. Two of Rarotonga's most established resorts are here: The Rarotongan Beach Resort and Crown Beach Resort, both with genuine beachfront access.
Sunsets at Black Rock (locally called Turou Beach) are the real deal. The water there is clear, the snorkelling is decent off the reef, and there's far less foot traffic than Muri. You're about 15 minutes by scooter from Avarua for anything you need.
Crown Beach Resort at $160-290/night edges out The Rarotongan for couples. The Rarotongan at $145-310/night wins on family facilities and the lagoonarium is a genuine draw. Both resorts have good spa and dining options, which matters here because you're not walking to much else without wheels.

The world-class lagoon. Everything lives up to the hype.
Aitutaki is a 45-minute flight from Rarotonga on Air Rarotonga and it operates at a completely different level of beauty. The lagoon is enormous, shallow in places, and that impossible turquoise colour you assume is photo-edited. It isn't. One Foot Island (Tapuaetai) is the postcard image you've seen a thousand times and it's better in person.
Pacific Resort Aitutaki in Arutanga is one of the best resorts in the Pacific for the price at $195-370/night. It sits right on the lagoon edge, the service is excellent, and the restaurant does fresh fish that makes you want to cancel your flight home. Aitutaki Lagoon Private Island Resort is in a completely separate category at $795-1,200/night. It's an actual private island. The price reflects that.
The island is small and quiet by design. There are no clubs, no late-night bar strips. You snorkel, kayak, eat fresh fish, and watch the lagoon change colour through the day. If that sounds boring, Aitutaki isn't for you. If it sounds perfect, block out at least 3 nights.
Xem tất cả khách sạn Aitutaki → South Coast (Titikaveka & Vaimaanga) 2 khách sạn được xác minh Quieter, cheaper, and the swimming is better than most people realise.
Quieter, cheaper, and the swimming is better than most people realise.
The south coast of Rarotonga gets overlooked because it lacks the marketing budget of Muri and Arorangi. That's a mistake. Papua Beach near Titikaveka is one of the best swimming spots on the island, the reef is healthy, and the villages here feel like the real Cook Islands rather than a resort strip.
Vara's Beach House in Titikaveka is our pick for value-conscious travellers who don't want hostel life. At $105-155/night, it's 3 minutes walk from Papua Beach and a world away from the resort crowds. Sanctuary Rarotonga on the Beach in Vaimaanga is the luxury option on this coast at $340-580/night, with an intimate boutique setup and direct beach access.
You'll need a scooter or car for this coast. Avarua is about 20 minutes east along the ring road. The south coast has limited dining options outside the resorts, so plan accordingly. But the tradeoff is quiet mornings, uncrowded beaches, and some of the most honest pricing on the island.
Xem tất cả khách sạn South Coast (Titikaveka & Vaimaanga) → Avarua (Town Centre) 1 khách sạn được xác minh The island's only real town. Practical, central, not the prettiest.
The island's only real town. Practical, central, not the prettiest.
Avarua is Rarotonga's capital and the only urban settlement worth calling a town. It's where the airport sits, where the banks and supermarkets are, and where Punanga Nui Market runs on Saturday mornings with local food, crafts, and more fresh coconut than you can handle. The beach near Avarua is not good for swimming.
Aremango Guesthouse is the one vetted pick here, at $55-85/night. It's a solid budget base, about 10 minutes walk from the market and 5 minutes from the waterfront. If you're catching an early morning flight or want to explore the island from a central point, Avarua makes sense. Otherwise, base yourself at Muri or the west coast and day-trip in.
The vibe here is functional rather than romantic. That's not a criticism. It's just honest. Cook Islands has limited accommodation variety in Avarua, and most travellers who've been here twice skip the town hotels entirely and rent a scooter from wherever they're staying.

Romantic Escape
Arorangi's west coast, specifically Crown Beach Resort, is the best base. Sunset walks along Turou Beach, private beachfront, and a spa that delivers. No distractions. Just you and the reef.
Beach & Lagoon
Muri Beach is the undisputed winner. The lagoon is shallow, calm, and dotted with kayak-accessible motu. Muri Beach Club Hotel puts you literally on the water's edge.
Family Holiday
Muri Beach again, but with Te Manava Luxury Villas giving families the villa space they actually need. The Rarotongan in Arorangi earns extra points for the lagoonarium that keeps kids occupied for hours.
Budget Travel
Avarua town centre is your cheapest base, with Aremango Guesthouse at $55-85/night. Pair it with a $30/day scooter and the $5 ring road bus and you can see all of Rarotonga without spending resort money.
Culture & Local Life
Avarua on a Saturday morning for Punanga Nui Market is as local as Rarotonga gets. The Te Vara Nui Village cultural show near Muri is touristy but genuinely well done, worth the $95 entry.
Foodie Travel
Muri Night Market on Wednesdays and Fridays is the hub. Fresh ika mata (raw fish in coconut cream), BBQ meats, and local desserts under $15 a plate. Pacific Resort Aitutaki's restaurant is the single best fine dining experience in the Cook Islands.
Cách chúng tôi đánh giá những khách sạn này
Mỗi khách sạn trong danh sách này đều trải qua cùng một quy trình đánh giá. Đây là cách chúng tôi chấm điểm.
We reviewed 8,000+ options across the main regions of Cook Islands. We cut anything with misleading lagoon-view photos that turned out to face a car park, overpriced resorts coasting on old TripAdvisor glory, and guesthouses where 'beachfront' meant a 10-minute walk through someone's garden. Cook Islands has a real problem with inflated ratings on small properties with only a handful of reviews. We ignored those. What's left are 10 places we'd actually tell a friend to book.
Peak Season (Jul-Aug)
School holidays from Australia and New Zealand pack Rarotonga and Aitutaki. Air Rarotonga flights to Aitutaki sell out weeks ahead and accommodation in Muri Beach is tight by June. Expect to pay 30-50% more than shoulder rates and book everything at least 3 months out. The weather is excellent though: dry, clear, and perfect for snorkelling.
Sweet Spot (Apr-Jun)
This is the window we recommend most. The wet season has ended, the island is green, and resort prices sit 15-25% below peak. Temperatures hover around 24-26°C with low humidity. April and May are particularly good: fewer crowds than June but the same dry, clear skies.
Shoulder Season (Sep-Oct)
September and October are still dry and warm at 24-27°C, with the post-school-holiday crowds well gone. This is a genuinely underrated window, especially for Aitutaki. Prices start creeping up in October as the summer rush approaches from the Southern Hemisphere. Te Maeva Nui festival in late July bleeds into early August and can affect August bookings in Avarua.
Wet Season (Nov-Mar)
Cyclone season runs January through March, and Cook Islands has taken direct hits in recent years. November and early December can be fine but it's a gamble. If you go, travel insurance with cyclone coverage is non-negotiable. The upside: resorts drop to $95-160/night and the island is quiet enough that Muri Beach feels like a private lagoon.
Cách đặt khách sạn tại Cook Islands
Chiến lược đặt phòng thông minh cho Cook Islands.
Book Aitutaki flights the moment you confirm your trip
Air Rarotonga is the only airline flying Rarotonga to Aitutaki. It's a small operation with limited seats, and the 45-minute flight books out weeks ahead in peak season (July-August). Return fares run $200-280 NZD. Don't assume you can sort it out once you arrive in Rarotonga. You can't.
Hire a scooter for at least one full day, even if your resort is on the beach
The 32km ring road around Rarotonga takes about 2 hours at a relaxed pace with stops. Scooter hire runs $30-45/day from operators near Avarua and at most major resorts. The Cross-Island Track trailhead near Avatiu is worth the 30-minute ride from Muri. You'll see parts of the island that resort guests almost never reach.
Don't eat every meal at your resort
Resort food in Cook Islands is consistently overpriced relative to quality. Café Salsa on the Avarua waterfront does the best coffee on the island. The Muri Night Market (Wednesdays and Fridays near Mamanu Street) serves genuinely great local food for $8-15 a plate. Even mid-range resorts like The Rarotongan charge $35-55 for mains that the market beats for $12.
Check the tide chart before you plan a snorkel session
Cook Islands' reef-protected lagoons are tide-dependent. Low tide on the south coast, particularly around Papua Beach near Titikaveka, can expose the reef and make swimming difficult or coral-damaging. Most dive shops in Muri (there are 3 operators along the lagoon strip) will tell you the optimal swim times for free if you ask. Aim for 2 hours either side of high tide.
Currency: NZD is the local currency, USD is widely accepted but at a cost
Cook Islands uses the New Zealand dollar. USD is accepted at most resorts and some restaurants, but the exchange rate they apply is typically 10-15% worse than the bank rate. The Westpac and ANZ branches in Avarua on the main road do better rates. ATMs in Avarua dispense NZD. Bring enough cash for the south coast and Arorangi where card machines are less reliable.
Rarotonga's north coast beach is not worth your time
The beach near Avarua and along the airport strip looks fine on a map but has limited swimming due to reef gaps, stronger currents, and frankly murky water by Cook Islands standards. Stay south or east. Papua Beach in Titikaveka, Muri lagoon, and Black Rock in Arorangi are the three beaches worth building your trip around. The north coast is for transit, not towels.
Câu hỏi thường gặp về khách sạn tại Cook Islands
Câu trả lời thẳng thắn từ đội ngũ của chúng tôi.
What's the best area to stay in Rarotonga?
Muri Beach is the sweet spot. You get calm lagoon water, the Muri Night Market on Wednesdays and Fridays, and a string of good restaurants within 5 minutes walk. Arorangi on the west coast is quieter and sunsets are genuinely better, but you'll need a scooter or car to get around. Avarua town is cheap and central but the beach there is pretty ordinary.
How much do hotels in Cook Islands cost per night?
Budget guesthouses in Avarua run $55-95/night. Mid-range resorts on Muri Beach or the west coast sit around $145-280/night. Luxury villas and the big resort names push $310-580/night, and Aitutaki Lagoon Private Island Resort starts at $795/night. You get what you pay for here, and the gap between mid-range and luxury is genuinely noticeable.
Is Aitutaki worth the extra cost and flight?
Yes. Full stop. The 45-minute flight from Rarotonga costs around $200-280 return on Air Rarotonga, and the lagoon is one of the top 3 in the Pacific. Pacific Resort Aitutaki starts at $195/night and delivers serious value for what you get. If the Aitutaki Lagoon Private Island Resort is in your budget, that's in a different league entirely.
When is the best time to visit Cook Islands?
April through October is the dry season, with temperatures around 23-26°C and far less humidity. July and August are peak crowd months, especially around Aitutaki. The wet season from November to March brings lower prices (some resorts drop 20-30%) but also cyclone risk, particularly January through March.
Do I need a car or scooter in Rarotonga?
Scooters are the move. Rarotonga's entire coastal road (Ara Metua and the main ring road) is only 32km around. Scooter hire runs $30-45/day from operators near Avarua town centre. The bus (the 'Cook Islands Bus') circles the island both ways and costs $5 flat, but it only runs until around 4pm, so nights out require a taxi or scooter.
Are there good budget hotels in Cook Islands?
Aremango Guesthouse in Avarua is the best honest budget pick at $55-85/night, about 10 minutes walk from Punanga Nui Market. Dine & Surf Hostel in Muri gets you close to the lagoon for $65-95/night. Don't expect luxury at these prices, but both are clean, well-run, and genuinely good value in a destination that can empty your wallet fast.
Which hotels are best for a honeymoon or romantic trip?
Crown Beach Resort and Spa in Arorangi is the most consistently romantic option at $160-290/night, with direct beach access and a strong spa. Sanctuary Rarotonga on the Beach in Vaimaanga on the south coast steps it up considerably at $340-580/night. Aitutaki Lagoon Private Island Resort is the ultimate splurge if budget isn't the constraint.
What's the closest hotel to Muri Lagoon?
Muri Beach Club Hotel sits right on the lagoon shore, rated 8.8 and priced $175-280/night. It's under 2 minutes walk to the water and about 5 minutes from the Muri Night Market. Te Manava Luxury Villas and Spa is also in Muri and has the space advantage if you're travelling with family.
Is it safe to swim at all beaches in Rarotonga?
Not all of them. The north coast near Avarua and the airport has reef gaps and stronger currents. Muri Beach and Titikaveka on the south coast are the safest and most sheltered for swimming. Papua Beach near Titikaveka is stunning and rarely crowded, about 20 minutes drive from Avarua.
Do Cook Islands hotels include breakfast?
Some do, many don't. Budget spots like Aremango Guesthouse typically don't include breakfast. Mid-range and luxury resorts often offer it as an add-on at $25-45/person, which adds up fast. The Muri Night Market (Wednesdays and Fridays) and Café Salsa on the Avarua waterfront are both better value than any resort breakfast buffet.
How do I get from Rarotonga Airport to my hotel?
Rarotonga International Airport is right on the northwest coast near Avarua, so taxis to Avarua hotels take 5-10 minutes and cost around $15-20 NZD. Getting to Muri Beach on the east side takes about 20-25 minutes and runs closer to $30-40 NZD. Most resorts offer airport transfers but always ask the price first as they mark up heavily.
Are Cook Islands hotels good for families with kids?
Muri Beach is the best base for families. The lagoon is shallow and calm, and Te Manava Luxury Villas and Spa in Muri gives you proper villa space at $210-340/night. The Rarotongan Beach Resort and Lagoonarium in Arorangi earns its name. It has an actual lagoonarium with tropical fish, and kids go absolutely wild for it.
