Country Lodge sits up in Hill Station, away from the noise and heat of central Freetown. The elevated position gives good views across the city and the grounds are spacious and well maintained. Brussels Airlines, Air Maroc, and Air Senegal fly to Lungi International Airport from major European hubs. Return flights cost $600-1100. The airport sits across the estuary from Freetown. Budget $90 for the helicopter transfer or $20 total for ferry plus taxi.

Freetown: Beyond the Chaos
Freetown is loud, traffic-clogged, and genuinely interesting. Aberdeen peninsula has Lumley Beach, the best dining strip, and most of the better hotels. Old Fourah Bay College (1827, West Africa oldest university) is 20 minutes uphill from the center.
Big Market near the National Stadium sells fabric, crafts, and street food. Go before 11am when it is cooler. Cotton Tree in the city center is a 500-year-old kapok tree that was a landmark for freed slaves. Free to visit.
Sierra Leone's Atlantic Beaches
The 200 km stretch of Atlantic coast south of Freetown includes some of West Africa cleanest beaches. Tokeh Beach is the showpiece: white sand, minimal litter, consistent gentle waves. It takes 45 minutes from Freetown by road.
Bureh Beach has a surfing community and 2-meter waves November through March. Bureh Beach Club offers board rentals ($15/day) and lessons. Sherbro Island further south is the luxury outlier: no roads, access by boat only, remarkable isolation.
Tiwai Island and the Southeast
Tiwai Island Wildlife Sanctuary is arguably West Africa best primate destination. Ten primate species including pygmy hippos live here. The 45 km2 island sits in the Moa River, 300 km southeast of Freetown.
The sanctuary lodge costs $150-210/night with all meals and guided walks included. Night walks ($15 supplement) are when you see the most. The road from Freetown to Kambama takes 6 hours on a good day. Rent a 4x4.
Diamond Country: Kono and the East
Kono District in eastern Sierra Leone was the center of the country conflict-era diamond trade. Today it is a quiet agricultural region with few tourists. The town of Koidu has basic guesthouses for $40-60/night.
Outamba-Kilimi National Park in the northwest has hippos, buffalo, and 250 bird species. Infrastructure is minimal. Bring camping gear or stay at the park hut. The drive from Freetown to Outamba takes 5-7 hours on rough roads.
Bonthe and Sherbro Island
Sherbro Island is one of West Africa most isolated destinations. Bonthe town has colonial Portuguese and British architecture from the 17th-19th century. The Sherbro Island Resort charges $260-380/night and runs eco-tours and turtle monitoring.

West African rains hit hard May through October. Roads to Tiwai Island and Outamba-Kilimi become difficult. Freetown and the beach corridor remain accessible but muddy. Hotel prices drop 30-40%. Lush green landscape.
Peak Dry (Dec-Feb)
Christmas and New Year bring the highest demand. The Place Resort and Tokeh Beach Resort book out weeks ahead. Sherbro Island turtle monitoring runs November to March, so this is also the best time for eco-travel.
Shoulder (Oct-Nov)
October and November sit between the rains and peak season. Roads are drying out. Turtle nesting begins on Sherbro Island in November. Hotels have availability. Lumley Beach is quiet. Best value period of the year.

Book the helicopter transfer from Lungi Airport
The fastest way from Lungi Airport to Freetown is by helicopter ($90, 12 minutes). The ferry costs $10 but takes 40 minutes plus a $10-15 taxi ride. Night ferries are risky in bad weather. Paramount Airlines and Bristow run helicopter schedules; book online or through your hotel before you arrive.
Arrive with US dollars in cash
The leoneor (SLL) is the local currency but US dollars are accepted everywhere tourist-facing. ATMs in Freetown work but are unreliable. Bring $200-300 in cash. Outside Freetown there are almost no ATMs. Change money at commercial banks on Siaka Stevens Street for better rates than hotels.
Get a local SIM at the airport
Africell and Orange have good coverage in Freetown and the beach corridor. Buy a SIM at Lungi Airport or at any telecoms shop in Freetown for $2-3. Data is cheap at around $5/GB. Coverage drops significantly in the southeast (Tiwai, Kono). Download offline maps before heading upcountry.
Get a yellow fever certificate before you leave home
Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory for entry into Sierra Leone. You need the physical yellow WHO card as proof. Border control checks it. Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended. Start tablets at least 1 week before arrival. Consult a travel clinic 4-6 weeks before departure.
Hire a local driver for day trips
Traffic in Freetown is notorious. Having a local driver for the full day ($60-80 for 4x4) is worth it for beach trips and sanctuary visits. Your hotel can arrange one. Negotiate the day rate upfront including fuel. Motorbike taxis (okadas) are fine for short rides in town, $1-2.
Book Tiwai Island 1 week ahead minimum
The Tiwai Island Conservation Association limits visitors to 20 per day. Email or call ahead to confirm space. The lodge holds only 8-10 guests. The drive from Freetown takes 6 hours so arriving without a confirmed spot is a wasted trip. Bring cash as there are no card machines.
