July to October is when humpback whales arrive from Antarctica and why most international visitors come. Vava'u fills up in August with whale swimmers, sailors, and divers. Book whale swimming tours 3-6 months ahead for August. Inter-island flights sell out. Nautilus and Sandy Beach Resort require advance booking. Temperatures are perfect at 20-27 degrees with low humidity.
Dry Season (May-June)
May and June are before the whale season proper but after the wet season. Prices are 20-30% lower. Weather is dry, cool, and clear. Diving visibility in Vava'u is excellent. The beaches of Ha'apai are at their best. Ecolodges at Treasure Island and Matafonua Lodge are available without advance booking. A genuinely good time for non-whale visitors.
Wet Season (December-March)
The wet season brings cyclone risk and high humidity. January and February are the peak cyclone months. Most serious travelers avoid this period. Prices are very low but the risk of disrupted plans is real. If you must travel, stick to Tongatapu where evacuation options exist.
Shoulder Season (November, April)
November is the end of whale season with lower prices and fewer crowds. April is the transition from wet to dry. Weather is warming and becoming clearer. Neither month is ideal but both offer significantly lower prices than peak. Good for budget-conscious travelers who can be flexible.

Ha'apai has no reliable ATM. The one bank in Pangai town has intermittent ATM service. Withdraw sufficient Pa'anga or USD in Nuku'alofa before flying. Respect Tongan customs, especially about dress and kava
Tonga has strong traditions about dress. Shorts and shoulders need covering in villages and churches. A ta'ovala (pandanus mat) worn around the waist is the respectful way to approach a Tongan chief or elder. Many resorts and villages will provide one. Kava ceremonies are the Tongan social institution. Accepting an invitation to a kava ceremony is accepting hospitality. Do not refuse.
