Papaya Guesthouse
Papaya sits right in the heart of Jinja town, walking distance from the Nile source and the main market. Rooms are simple but spotlessly clean, with reliable hot water and decent Wi-Fi by Ugandan standards. The small restaurant serves solid Ugandan staples and cold Nile Special beer at fair prices. It works well as a base for white-water rafting day trips booked through any of the operators nearby. Not glamorous, but honest value for the price.

Chobe Safari Lodge
Chobe sits on the northern bank of the Nile inside Murchison Falls National Park, with elephants regularly wandering through the grounds at dusk. The thatched-roof bandas are comfortable and well-maintained with screened windows and solid beds. Game drives and boat cruises to the falls base are easy to arrange directly at reception. The open-air restaurant has a great view of the river and the food quality is better than expected for a remote park lodge. Book well in advance during peak dry season.

Fort Murchison Lodge
Fort Murchison is one of the better stopover options in Masindi for travelers heading north to Murchison Falls National Park. The main building is a colonial-era structure with thick walls that keep rooms noticeably cooler than the outside heat. Grounds are spacious and well-kept, with enough space for children to move around safely. The food is reliable if unexciting, and the staff can arrange transfers and park logistics. It serves its purpose as a comfortable overnight stop rather than a destination in itself.

Mihingo Lodge
Mihingo sits on a rocky outcrop overlooking Lake Mburo National Park near Sanga, and the views from the open-sided lounge are among the best of any lodge in Uganda. The tented cottages are beautifully designed with private plunge pools and open-air showers that face the bush. Zebras and impalas regularly graze within sight of the main area. Guided walks and horseback safaris through the park are genuine highlights not available at most Ugandan lodges. This is easily the most romantic option in southwestern Uganda short of ultra-luxury camps.

Protea Hotel by Marriott Kampala
The Protea sits in the upscale Kololo neighborhood, close to several embassies and international offices, making it a go-to for business travelers in the capital. Rooms are consistent Marriott quality with reliable air conditioning, fast Wi-Fi, and proper blackout curtains. The rooftop pool is a genuine bonus given Kampala's heat, and the breakfast buffet covers both Western and Ugandan options well. Traffic around Kololo Hill Road can be brutal during rush hour so factor that into any meeting schedules. Overall a reliable, professional choice in a good part of town.

Nile Hotel Jinja
The Nile Hotel occupies a quiet spot along Nile Crescent in Jinja with direct views over the water toward the source of the Nile. Rooms are spacious by Ugandan standards, with proper furniture and updated bathrooms. The outdoor terrace is the hotel's strongest feature, perfect for sundowners as boats drift past on the river below. Service is attentive without being intrusive. It sits above the budget category but the location justifies every shilling.

Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp
Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp sits directly inside the boundary of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park at Buhoma, meaning gorilla families are sometimes heard from the camp itself. The eight luxury tents are fully kitted out with four-poster beds, wood-burning stoves, and rainfall showers, which is remarkable given the remote forest setting. Meals are excellent and the naturalist guides on staff add real depth to every trek and forest walk. The camp price includes gorilla trekking permits, which significantly changes the value calculation at first glance. This is one of the premier gorilla trekking experiences on the continent.

Wildwaters Lodge
Wildwaters occupies its own private island in the middle of the Nile, accessible only by a short boat transfer from the mainland near Jinja. The six tented suites are perched directly over the rapids, and the sound of rushing water is constant and genuinely extraordinary. Each tent has an outdoor deck with a day bed positioned perfectly for watching the white water below. Meals are prepared to a high standard and the bar stocks a solid range of spirits and wine. This is one of the most unique and memorable places to stay in East Africa.

Nên ở đâu tại Uganda
Khu vực bạn chọn quan trọng hơn bản thân khách sạn.
Gorilla trekking: what you actually need to know
The $800 gorilla permit includes a maximum of one hour with a gorilla family of up to 8 individuals. The trek to find the gorillas takes anywhere from 1 to 8 hours depending on where the family has moved overnight. You are told at the morning briefing which family you will track. Some families (Mubare group near Buhoma, for example) have shorter average treks than others. Ask your lodge which family is currently allocated to you.
Bring waterproof boots, long sleeves despite the heat, and a change of clothes for the trek back. The Buhoma sector forest floor is mud in any season. Rangers carry extra machetes to clear paths. The experience of sitting 7 meters from a 200-kilogram silverback is genuinely unlike anything else. Book Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp at $950 to $1,400 if budget allows. Otherwise Bwindi Forest Lodge at $130 to $220 is the honest mid-range choice.
Murchison Falls: the boat cruise and the falls base
The boat cruise from Paraa lodge upstream to the base of Murchison Falls is the single best wildlife experience in the park. The 3-hour cruise passes hippo pods within arm's reach, enormous Nile crocodiles on the riverbanks, and often elephants drinking at the water's edge. Buffalo and Uganda kob are visible from the boat on the northern bank. The cruise costs $30 per person and departs daily at 8 AM and 2 PM from Paraa ferry crossing.
Chobe Safari Lodge at Pakuba on the north bank of the Nile charges $110 to $180 per night and is the best-positioned lodge for both game drives and the falls visit. The climb to the top of the falls from the south bank takes about 30 minutes and gives a directly overhead view of the most powerful waterfall in Africa by volume. Combine the climb with a morning game drive for a full day.
Jinja: the adventure capital of East Africa
Jinja sits on the northern shore of Lake Victoria at the point where the Nile begins its 6,695-kilometer journey to the Mediterranean. The Source of the Nile garden is a 10-minute tuk-tuk ride from town and costs $5 entry. The actual source is now marked by a floating platform following the damming of Bujagali Falls downstream.
White-water rafting grades 4 to 5 runs cost $80 to $135 depending on duration. Nile River Explorers operates from a camp below the Nile Crescent. Bungee jumping over the Nile costs $115. Wildwaters Lodge on its private island charges $260 to $380 per night and includes a boat transfer across the rapids. It is the most unique accommodation option in Uganda for travelers not focused solely on gorillas.
Kampala: the city you fly through on the way to the parks
Kampala is worth one night rather than being treated purely as a transit stop. The Uganda Museum on Kira Road (5,000 UGX entry) has the best collection of Ugandan cultural artifacts, traditional instruments, and historical exhibits in the country. The Kasubi Tombs, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and royal burial ground of the Buganda kingdom, is 30 minutes from the city center.
The Protea by Marriott in Kololo at $140 to $210 is the most reliable business hotel. Kololo hill itself, around Acacia Avenue and Nakasero Road, has the best concentration of restaurants and is walkable after dark. Red Chilli Hideaway in Bugolobi at $45 to $75 is the backpacker hub and has the most useful noticeboard for ride-shares to Bwindi and the national parks.
Lake Mburo: the underrated national park
Lake Mburo is Uganda's smallest and most accessible national park and the only one with impalas and zebras. It sits 3 hours from Kampala on the Mbarara highway, directly on the route to Bwindi. Unlike the other parks, Lake Mburo allows guided walking safaris and horseback riding, both rare in East African national parks.
Mihingo Lodge at $180 to $240 per night offers the horseback option, early morning walks, and spectacular views across the savannah from its rocky outcrop location. Night game drives are permitted here, which is unusual in Uganda. The lake itself has excellent hippo and bird watching by canoe, available through all lodges for $20 to $30 per person.
Practical transport between Uganda's main destinations
Internal flights save significant time. Aerolink Uganda operates scheduled services from Entebbe to Kihihi (near Bwindi), Kasese (Queen Elizabeth), Pakuba (Murchison Falls), and Jinja. Prices range from $150 to $250 each way. Charter flights are available for small groups at $600 to $900 per flight. Book at least 3 weeks ahead in peak season.
Shared taxis (matatus) and private hire vehicles cover all main routes. Kampala to Jinja takes 1.5 hours by car ($30 to $50 hire). Kampala to Mbarara takes 3 hours ($15 to $25 in shared taxi). Self-drive is possible in a 4x4 but park roads require good clearance. Hiring a driver-guide costs $80 to $120 per day and adds significant value on longer routes.

Wildlife Immersion
Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp in Bwindi at $950 to $1,400 per night sits inside the park boundary. Gorilla families are sometimes heard from the camp itself. The experience of sitting 7 meters from a silverback in primary rainforest is singular. It justifies the cost in a way few luxury properties anywhere can.
Nile Adventure
Wildwaters Lodge on a private island in the Nile rapids near Jinja charges $260 to $380 per night. Six tented suites sit over the white water and the sound of the rapids is constant. Nothing else in East Africa offers this combination of luxury and raw adventure.
Lake and Savannah
Mihingo Lodge at Lake Mburo at $180 to $240 per night sits on a rocky outcrop with views across the national park. The private plunge pools and open-air showers are genuinely romantic. Horseback safaris through the park at dawn are available only here and at no other Uganda national park.
Budget Adventure Base
Red Chilli Hideaway in Kampala Bugolobi at $45 to $75 per night is the best-connected budget property for organizing park trips. The noticeboard has daily ride-shares to Bwindi, Murchison, and Jinja at a fraction of private hire costs. Papaya Guesthouse in Jinja at $60 to $90 is the best river-town budget option.
Safari Family
Protea Hotel by Marriott Kampala in Kololo at $140 to $210 is the safest family base in the capital with a rooftop pool, reliable Wi-Fi, and good food. For national park family stays, Chobe Safari Lodge at Murchison at $110 to $180 has thatched bandas safe for children and daily boat cruises.
Ugandan Food Culture
Matoke (steamed green banana) with groundnut stew is Uganda's national comfort dish, best at local restaurants in Jinja old town for $3 to $5. Kampala's Acacia Avenue restaurant strip in Kololo has the best range of East African and international cuisine. Wildwaters Lodge sets the highest standard for food quality in the whole country.
Cách chúng tôi đánh giá những khách sạn này
Mỗi khách sạn trong danh sách này đều trải qua cùng một quy trình đánh giá. Đây là cách chúng tôi chấm điểm.
We reviewed accommodation across Uganda's five main travel zones. Properties were assessed on location quality, safety, wildlife access, and how honestly they represent the gorilla trekking experience which is the main draw for most international visitors.
Long Dry Season (June-September)
Peak gorilla trekking season. Bwindi trails are drier and more navigable. Wildlife concentrates around water sources at Murchison Falls and Lake Mburo. This is the peak period for permits and lodges book out months in advance. June and July nights in Murchison Falls can drop to 15 degrees C so bring a layer.
Short Dry Season (January-February)
The short dry season is a quieter and cheaper alternative to the June to September peak. Gorilla permits are easier to obtain at 3 to 4 weeks notice. Murchison Falls has good wildlife and the falls are at high water from the preceding rains. Lake Mburo is excellent. Jinja white water runs well throughout this period.
Long Rains (March-May)
The long rainy season makes Bwindi forest trails extremely muddy and sometimes dangerous. Access roads to remote lodges can be cut off. Murchison Falls is manageable. Kampala and Jinja run normally. Some lodges offer significant discounts. Not recommended for gorilla trekking first-timers.
Short Rains (October-November)
October is often fine and the short rains begin in November. The first half of October can be excellent with lower prices and fewer tourists than peak season. Bwindi is accessible in October. November rains make conditions less predictable. Best to avoid November for gorilla trekking unless you have flexible dates.
Cách đặt khách sạn tại Uganda
Chiến lược đặt phòng thông minh cho Uganda.
Secure your gorilla permit before booking any Bwindi lodge
Gorilla permits cost $800 per person and sell out months in advance for peak season (June to September). Book through the Uganda Wildlife Authority at ugandawildlife.org and get your permit confirmation number. Only then confirm your lodge booking. Several lodges offer permit plus accommodation packages but verify the permit is actually confirmed by UWA, not just promised by the lodge.
Fly into Bwindi if you can
The road drive from Kampala to Buhoma takes 9 to 10 hours on partially rough roads. Aerolink Uganda flies from Entebbe to Kihihi airstrip, a 15-minute drive from Buhoma, in about 45 minutes for roughly $200 each way. On a short trip this time difference is significant. Flying also means you arrive fresh for an early trekking briefing the next morning rather than exhausted from a full day of driving.
Budget correctly for a Uganda trip
The most common mistake is underestimating total costs. Gorilla permit: $800 per person. Lodge in Bwindi per night: $130 to $1,400. Transport from Kampala: $200 flight or $80 to $120 private vehicle. Park entry fees: $40 per day. A realistic 5-day Bwindi plus Murchison safari costs $2,500 to $4,000 per person excluding international flights.
Carry yellow fever vaccination certificate
Yellow fever vaccination is a mandatory entry requirement for Uganda. You must present the International Certificate of Vaccination (the yellow WHO card) at immigration. Without it you can be denied entry or required to vaccinate at the airport. The certificate should show vaccination at least 10 days before arrival. Also start malaria prophylaxis before departure and continue for the full recommended period after return.
The best game drives in Murchison start at 6:30 AM
Lion and leopard activity drops sharply after 9 AM when the heat builds. Arrange with Chobe Safari Lodge or your Pakuba property to be at the park gate by 6:30 AM. The golden hour light on the savannah at sunrise is also the best time for photography. The boat cruise to Murchison Falls departs at 8 AM and 2 PM daily from Paraa. Combine a 6:30 AM game drive with the 8 AM boat for the best full day.
Book Wildwaters Island Lodge well ahead
Wildwaters Lodge near Jinja has only 6 tented suites and operates as one of the most sought-after properties in East Africa. In peak season (June to September), it books out 2 to 3 months ahead. The boat transfer is a 10-minute trip from the Hairy Lemon riverside camp and operates daily. The lodge price includes all meals and boat transfers. Minimum stay is typically 2 nights.
Câu hỏi thường gặp về khách sạn tại Uganda
Câu trả lời thẳng thắn từ đội ngũ của chúng tôi.
How do I book a gorilla trekking permit in Uganda?
Gorilla permits in Uganda cost $800 per person per trek and must be booked through the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) at ugandawildlife.org. Permits for the main Bwindi trekking sectors, particularly Buhoma and Rushaga, book out 3 to 6 months in advance for peak season (June through September). Budget travelers should try for last-minute cancellations. Your permit number must be confirmed before booking any lodge in Bwindi.
What is the best area to stay in Bwindi for gorilla trekking?
Buhoma in the north is the most popular sector with the most lodges and best road access from Kampala (about 9 hours). Rushaga in the south has more gorilla families allocated to it and is closer to the Queen Elizabeth National Park circuit. Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp in Buhoma at $950 to $1,400 per night sits inside the park boundary. Bwindi Forest Lodge in Buhoma at $130 to $220 is the best mid-range option.
How long does it take to drive from Kampala to Bwindi?
Kampala to Bwindi Buhoma sector takes 8 to 10 hours by road on tarmac and murram roads. The route via Mbarara is the most common and the road is reasonable to the Kabale junction. The final stretch to Buhoma involves rough roads for the last 40 kilometers. Most lodges recommend a 4x4 vehicle. Flying to Kihihi airstrip near Bwindi cuts the travel to under 1 hour from Entebbe at around $200 each way.
What other wildlife can I see in Uganda besides gorillas?
Murchison Falls National Park hosts the largest population of Uganda kob antelope, lions, elephants, hippos, and the rare Rothschild giraffe (one of the world's most endangered giraffe subspecies). The boat cruise to the base of Murchison Falls sees hippos and crocodiles within meters of the boat. Lake Mburo National Park has impalas, zebras, hippos, and is the only place in Uganda to see topi and eland. Queen Elizabeth National Park has tree-climbing lions in the Ishasha sector.
Is white-water rafting on the Nile at Jinja worth doing?
Yes, the Grade 4 to 5 rapids on the White Nile near Jinja are considered some of the best commercially rafted rapids in Africa. Half-day trips cost $80 to $100 per person, full-day trips run $115 to $135. Operators including Nile River Explorers and Adrift run daily departures. The section near Bujagali Falls is the main run. Kayaking, bungee jumping over the Nile, and quad biking are also available in Jinja as add-on activities.
What is the best hotel in Kampala?
The Protea by Marriott Kampala in the upscale Kololo neighborhood at $140 to $210 per night is the most consistent business option. It has a rooftop pool, good breakfast, reliable air conditioning, and is close to several embassies and international offices. For more local character, boutique guesthouses in the Kololo and Nakasero neighborhoods offer good value at $80 to $130 per night. Avoid hotels in Wandegeya or near the Old Taxi Park if noise and safety are a priority.
When is the best time to visit Uganda?
Uganda has two dry seasons: January through February and June through September. June to September is the prime gorilla trekking window when trails are drier and less muddy. The short dry season in January and February is also good and less crowded. Avoid April, May, and November when heavy rain makes Bwindi's trails extremely muddy and can close access roads. The Nile at Jinja runs all year and white-water rafting is possible in every season.
What does a Uganda safari cost per person per night?
Budget lodges and guesthouses run $45 to $90 per night. Good mid-range safari lodges at Murchison Falls, Lake Mburo, and Bwindi range from $110 to $250. Luxury camps and top-rated lodges like Wildwaters Island on the Nile or Mihingo Lodge at Lake Mburo run $180 to $380. Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp in Bwindi is the country's most expensive property at $950 to $1,400 per night but includes the gorilla permit value in the overall calculation.
Do I need a visa to visit Uganda?
Most nationalities can get a visa online at visas.immigration.go.ug for $50 USD. East African citizens (Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan) enter visa-free. Apply at least 2 weeks before travel. The East Africa Tourist Visa covers Uganda, Kenya, and Rwanda for $100 and is worth considering if you plan to visit all three. Nationals of around 14 countries including South Africa, Mauritius, and Singapore enter visa-free.
What vaccinations do I need for Uganda?
Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory entry requirement for all travelers. Bring your International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (yellow card). Hepatitis A, typhoid, and tetanus are strongly recommended. Malaria prophylaxis is essential for all Uganda travel. Anti-malarial medication should be started before arrival. Meningitis and rabies vaccinations are recommended for long stays or wildlife park work. Consult your travel health clinic at least 4 to 6 weeks before departure.
What should I avoid when booking hotels in Uganda?
Avoid any lodge that cannot confirm which specific gorilla family you are assigned to trek before your arrival, as allocations are often switched without notice. Do not book Bwindi accommodation before securing your gorilla permit number. In Kampala, avoid guesthouses on Kampala Road or near the main taxi parks at night. For Murchison Falls, verify that your lodge can provide cold-weather gear as nights in the park drop below 15 degrees C in June and July.
Is Lake Mburo National Park worth a stop?
Yes, and it is often skipped. Lake Mburo sits 3 hours from Kampala on the Mbarara highway, making it the most accessible national park in Uganda. Zebras, impalas, hippos, and topi are easily seen within the first 30 minutes of a game drive. Mihingo Lodge at $180 to $240 per night offers horseback safaris through the park, the only park in Uganda where this is possible. Uganda kob and buffalo are also common. Allow at least one night.
