Conakry's neighborhoods: where to actually stay
Kaloum is Conakry's downtown peninsula and it's chaotic. Government buildings, the Grand Marché, and Rue du Commerce are all here. useful if you have business meetings, but exhausting if you don't. Flooding during rainy season (June-October) can make streets impassable for hours.
Camayenne is calmer, greener, and closer to the airport. The corniche stretch along Camayenne beach is where you'll find the Palm Camayenne Hotel and Hôtel Camayenne, both within a short walk of the ocean. Taxis to Kaloum cost roughly 50,000 GNF and take 20-35 minutes depending on traffic at the Autoroute roundabout.
Getting around Guinea without losing your mind
There's no metro or train network in Guinea. In Conakry, shared minibuses called 'gbaka' cover fixed routes for around 2,000-5,000 GNF per trip, but they're crowded and stop unpredictably. Motorcycle taxis ('motos') are faster for short hops. agree on a price before you get on, typically 10,000-20,000 GNF for trips under 5 km.
For inter-city travel, bush taxis (sept-places Peugeot 504s) depart from Gare Routière de Madina in Conakry. Kindia costs about 50,000 GNF, Labé runs 150,000-200,000 GNF. They leave when full, not on a schedule. Go early. departures dry up by early afternoon.
Rainy season vs. dry season: what it actually means for your trip
Guinea's rainy season runs roughly May-October, with peak intensity in July-August. Coastal Conakry gets around 4,300mm of rain annually. one of the highest totals in West Africa. Roads to Nzérékoré and Koundara can become genuinely impassable during heavy rains. Plan any inland trip for November-April.

Conakry sits on the Kaloum Peninsula, a narrow finger of land jutting into the Atlantic. Traffic is legendary. The main artery, Autoroute Le Prince, locks up during morning and evening rush. plan any cross-city move before 7am or after 8pm.
Kaloum is the business and government core. Camayenne, 15 kilometers northeast along the N1, is calmer and has better hotel options overall. Most expats and longer-stay visitors end up in Camayenne for a reason. It's also where the best restaurants and the corniche walk are.

Kindia, about 130 kilometers from Conakry on the N1, is the gateway to the highlands. Hôtel Koba is the best option here and sits within 20 minutes of the Chutes de la Soumba waterfall. one of Guinea's most accessible natural landmarks. It's a good one-night stopover if you're driving to Labé.
Roads in this region are paved but rough in parts. Allow extra travel time, especially after rain. Both hotels here have generators and are accustomed to guests arriving late due to road delays.

Nzérékoré is the capital of the Forest Region and the base for exploring Mont Nimba, a UNESCO biosphere reserve that straddles the Guinea-Côte d'Ivoire-Liberia border. The town itself is small and low-key. the main market near the central roundabout is worth a morning wander.

Faranah sits on the upper Niger River and it's where you go if the river itself is the point. The hotel is 10 minutes walk from the Niger riverbank, where small pirogues take you across to the opposite shore for a few thousand francs.
Koundara, up near the Senegalese and Guinean-Bissau borders, is a frontier town. Hôtel Badiar is named after Badiar National Park, which starts about 20 kilometers northeast of town. It's basic by international standards but solid for what the region offers. At $155-200/night you're paying for the privilege of having a reliable room near one of West Africa's more remote park ecosystems.
Both towns are long drives from Conakry. Faranah is about 400 kilometers via the N2. roughly 6-8 hours. Koundara is even further north, close to 600 kilometers. Domestic flights help, but they're unreliable. Build extra days into any itinerary here.
