Nevis is a near-perfect volcanic cone with Nevis Peak at 985 meters at its center. The island is 36 square kilometers with a single main road running clockwise around it. Charlestown, the capital, has a small museum, a few craft shops, and the ferry dock to St. Kitts. The Four Seasons on Pinney's Beach is 10 minutes north of Charlestown and anchors the island's tourism.
Montpelier Plantation in the hills above Charlestown is the island's most distinctive property at $175 to $280 per night. The private beach club on Pinney's Beach is included via complimentary shuttle. St. Kitts: from Basseterre to Brimstone Hill

Frigate Bay is a narrow strip of land between the calm Caribbean sea (South Frigate Bay) and the rougher Atlantic (North Frigate Bay). The South Frigate Bay beach bar strip, known as The Strip, runs from the Marriott resort east to the quiet end with Vibes Beach Bar, Mr. X's, and half a dozen others in between. This is the best beach bar scene in St. Kitts.
St. Kitts Marriott Resort at $150 to $320 is the largest hotel in the area and the only one with a casino on the island. Timothy Beach Resort at $130 to $200 sits directly on the calm Caribbean side and is smaller and quieter than the Marriott. A local bus connects Frigate Bay to Basseterre in 15 minutes for $2.
The Nevis Peak hike: what to expect
The Nevis Peak trail climbs from Herbert's Heights on the island's eastern slope to the summit at 985 meters. A guide is mandatory and can be booked through any hotel on Nevis for $60 to $80 per person. The round trip takes 5 to 7 hours and is strenuous, through cloud forest in the upper third. The summit view covers Montserrat, Antigua, Barbuda, and St. Kitts on a clear day.
Start no later than 7 AM. Cloud typically descends by midday obscuring the summit views. Bring 3 liters of water per person, a rain jacket for the cloud forest, and proper hiking shoes with grip. The descent is often harder than the ascent due to slippery roots. Golden Rock Inn and Montpelier Plantation are both close to the trail access point.
Eating and drinking on both islands
Nevis has limited independent restaurant options outside the plantation hotels. The Montpelier Plantation restaurant is widely considered the best on the island. Sunshine's Beach Bar on Pinney's Beach is the most famous beach bar in Nevis, serving the original Killer Bee rum punch and fresh seafood from a shack directly on the sand. Prices: rum punch $6, fresh lobster $25 to $35 depending on size.
On St. Kitts, the beach bar strip at South Frigate Bay has the best atmosphere for casual eating from Thursday through Sunday. Getting around St. Kitts and Nevis
A rental car is the best way to explore St. Kitts independently. Costs run $50 to $70 per day. Driving is on the left. The main Ring Road around St. Kitts is well-maintained. The southeastern peninsula road ends at Major's Bay and requires backtracking. Local buses run from Basseterre Circus along all main routes for $2 to $3. Taxis from the airport to Frigate Bay cost $25 to $30.
On Nevis, the island is small enough to circle by car in under an hour. Rental cars cost $50 to $60 per day. A taxi from Charlestown to the Four Seasons costs $10.
