Cozy House 小羊房 花蓮背包客棧
Cozy House sits on a tree-lined street in Hualien City, and the name really does capture the feel. It's a low-key, no-fuss hostel that gets the basics right without pretending to be more than it is. You're a 13-minute walk from Hualien train station, and Dongdamen Night Market is 2 km away, so the location is genuinely useful. Dorm options include mixed-gender and single-sex rooms, some with bunk beds and warm decor. Bathrooms in dorms are shared, which is standard for this type of place. Private rooms step things up with TVs, balconies, and in some cases en suite bathrooms. Free breakfast is included, and there's a bright lounge and dining area to ease into your morning. Wi-Fi and air conditioning are the two things guests consistently praise, and both come standard. The kitchen, fridge, and microwave access in select rooms is a nice bonus if you want to self-cater. Just go in with hostel expectations and you'll likely leave very happy.

九份神隱之森|Twilight Forest |森林系秘境民宿|2-7人包棟
Twilight Forest feels like a deliberate escape from the noise of everyday travel. It's a whole-property rental, meaning your group gets the place to yourselves, and that alone changes the entire mood. The vibe is calm and unhurried, the kind of spot where you genuinely slow down. Wi-Fi and air conditioning are both on hand, so comfort isn't sacrificed for atmosphere. Breakfast is included, which guests consistently highlight as a standout part of the stay. The property is smoke-free, keeping things fresh and easy for everyone. Being in Ruifang District puts you in reach of one of Taiwan's most storied hill towns, and the area rewards explorers on foot. The guest feedback here is exceptionally strong, which tells us the experience consistently delivers. Our honest caveat: this is a whole-rental setup sized for two to seven people, so it's not the right call if you're booking a single room.

阡陌一舍 UNS (Stay)
阡陌一舍 UNS (Stay) carries a calm, no-nonsense character that feels genuinely local. It sits in Yancheng District, one of Kaohsiung's older, more lived-in quarters, so the city's walkable street life is right outside. The place is smoke-free throughout, which makes the whole stay feel cleaner and more considered. You get air conditioning, which matters in Taiwan's heat. Breakfast is on-site, so you can start the day without hunting for a cafe. There's also a restaurant, meaning you have an easy dinner option when you don't feel like wandering. Wi-Fi is reliable and well-regarded by guests. The vibe reads intimate rather than grand. three stars means don't expect a sprawling lobby or butler service, but the guest satisfaction here is genuinely impressive and hard to argue with. If you want a quiet, honest base in Kaohsiung with food sorted and strong fundamentals covered, this one delivers without fuss.

This is a straightforward, no-nonsense guesthouse on Dawan Road in Kending Village, right in the heart of Hengchun Township's most visited stretch of coastline. The feel is casual and unhurried, the kind of place that keeps things simple and lets the surrounding area do the talking. You get the essentials covered well: private bathroom, shower, air conditioning, and a refrigerator in your room. Wi-Fi is solid and parking is on-site, which matters a lot in this part of Taiwan where driving is often the smartest way to get around. The property is smoke-free and pet-friendly, cats included, so you won't have to leave your animal companion behind. An airport shuttle and on-site car rental give you real flexibility for getting here and exploring further. The Google reputation here is genuinely impressive, built on a large number of reviews. One honest note: with no official description or listed dining, expect a lean, practical stay rather than a resort-style experience. If you want a relaxed base near the beach without unnecessary fuss, this delivers.

Tie Dao Hotel, Tainan
Tie Dao Hotel sits right off a bustling roundabout directly across from Tainan train station, making it one of the more convenient bases you'll find in the city. It's a no-nonsense, three-star property in a commercial district, and it doesn't pretend to be anything else. Rooms are modest but practical, with flat-screen TVs, minifridges, and tea and coffeemaking equipment. Some rooms include a bathtub, which is a small but welcome bonus. Wi-Fi and bottled water are complimentary, and so is breakfast, so you're starting each morning ahead of the game. Parking is also free, which matters in a city where you'll want to explore. If you feel like heading out, Tainan Flower Night Market is 3 km away. The hotel is kid-friendly, and children aged five and under stay free with an adult. Coin-operated laundry rounds out the practical perks. The overall feel is calm and unhurried. If you want polish, look elsewhere. If you want reliability near the train station, this delivers.

OLAH Poshtel Hualien Zhongfu sits on a street lined with eateries, so you're immediately in the thick of local food culture. The vibe is no-nonsense and unhurried, the kind of place that strips things back without feeling cheap. Dorms are single-sex, with bunk beds, privacy curtains, individual reading lights, and lockers. Private rooms step it up with flat-screen TVs, minifridges, and en suite bathrooms. The rooftop terrace is a genuine perk, and there's a communal kitchen, lounges, and a dining room where breakfast buffet is served. Dongdamen Night Market is a 17-minute walk, and a complimentary shuttle covers the 3 km to Hualien train station. Bicycle rental is on-site if you'd rather explore under your own steam. Parking is available but limited, so plan ahead if you're arriving by car. For a three-star property, the guest satisfaction here speaks clearly. We'd recommend it to anyone who wants a clean, well-equipped base without paying for excess.

九份輕旅民宿
九份輕旅民宿 sits in Jiufen, one of Taiwan's most atmospheric hill towns, and it carries that unhurried, small-scale energy you'd hope for from a local guesthouse. The feel is calm and unpretentious. Guests consistently highlight three things: a solid breakfast, reliable Wi-Fi, and air conditioning that actually works. That's a practical trifecta for a warm-weather destination. The property is smoke-free, which keeps things clean and comfortable. Baggage storage is available, useful if you want to explore before check-in or after check-out. The verified guest satisfaction here is genuinely impressive, with reviewers landing on near-universal approval. We'd call that a strong signal. Jiufen rewards slow wandering, and this place seems built for exactly that pace. Our honest caveat: the official description is sparse, so go in with flexible expectations about room specifics. If the basics done well matter more to you than luxury trimmings, this one delivers.

HOTEL COZZI Kaohsiung Zhongshan
HOTEL COZZI Kaohsiung Zhongshan sits in a polished tower with direct views over Kaohsiung Harbor, and that alone sets a strong tone. The 85 Sky Tower is a 13-minute walk away, and the Liuhe Night Market is 3 km out, so you're genuinely well-placed for exploring the city. Rooms are relaxed rather than flashy: free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, sofas, and upgrade options with proper sitting areas. Suites add living rooms, and many units face the harbor. The Barbie-themed rooms are a fun differentiator if that's your thing. Complimentary breakfast is a real perk, and the on-site dining goes well beyond the usual: there's a trendy bar-restaurant and a penthouse steakhouse, both with city views. Parking, an airport shuttle, and a fitness center round things out nicely. The meeting rooms and business center suggest this place can handle more than a leisure weekend. We'd say the penthouse steakhouse is the one experience here you shouldn't skip, even if you're not staying the night.

Sunshine Liv. sits across the road from the South China Sea, and that location is the whole point. It's a modern, sleek property with a minimalist personality. Clean lines, balconies on every room, and sea views in most. You're a short walk from South Bay Beach, which means you can be in the water before breakfast without any fuss. Speaking of breakfast, it's available on-site, and so is afternoon tea if you want something unhurried in the afternoon. Rooms are straightforward and calm: Wi-Fi, a TV, a balcony. Upgraded rooms add living and dining areas, which gives you real space to breathe. In-room spa services are offered, so you don't have to leave to decompress. Kenting Night Market is a short drive away, and the hotel runs an airport shuttle if you need it. Snorkeling and scuba are also available, which makes this a solid base for anyone drawn to the water. One honest note: it's a three-star property, so don't come expecting luxury. Come expecting a well-located, no-nonsense stay with good views.

The property is fully smoke-free, which keeps things clean and calm throughout. Wi-Fi is available, so staying connected is straightforward. Baggage storage is on offer too, which is handy if you need to check out early or arrive before your room is ready. Beyond those basics, the verified details are slim. What we can say is that the guest response has been overwhelmingly positive, suggesting the experience consistently delivers. The overall impression is intimate and no-nonsense. One honest caveat: if you need a long list of on-site amenities, like a pool or restaurant, we can't confirm those here. Go in expecting a stripped-back, well-regarded stay in a genuinely interesting city, and you'll likely leave satisfied.

Nên ở đâu tại Taiwan
Khu vực bạn chọn quan trọng hơn bản thân khách sạn.
Taipei neighborhoods: where each one actually makes sense
Ximending is pedestrian, loud, and genuinely energetic. The shopping streets run 24 hours and there is a serious underground tattoo culture here you will not find anywhere else in Taiwan. Hotels in this area cost 20-30% less than equivalent quality in Da'an District. The Ximen MRT station connects to every major attraction in under 20 minutes.
Da'an District is where Taipei residents live and eat. The night market on Tonghua Street (also called Linjiang) is small, non-touristy, and has better food than Shilin. Fuxing Road and Anhe Road are lined with restaurants where tables spill onto the sidewalk from 6pm. Mid-range hotels here run 3,000 to 5,500 TWD per night.
Zhongshan is practical: central, near the airport express, and has the highest density of mid-range international hotels. The Zhongshan MRT station connects north (to Danshui, 40 minutes) and south (to Xinyi and Taipei 101) on the same line. Good choice if you need a no-fuss base for a short trip.
Taroko Gorge: how to actually experience it
The gorge begins 30km from Hualien city. The scenic road runs 20km into the marble canyon. Short trail options include the Shakadang Trail (an easy 4km riverside walk) and the Baiyang Waterfall Trail (8km round trip, requires a headlamp for the final tunnel section). Both can be done independently without a guide.
The Silks Place Taroko hotel is at the gorge entrance and lets you wake up inside the park. It books solid for weekends 6-8 weeks ahead. Budget travelers stay in Hualien city and rent scooters (300 TWD per day) or join half-day tours (700 to 1,200 TWD per person) from the train station area.
Avoid visiting on weekends if you can. Weekdays in the gorge have a fraction of the visitor numbers. The early morning light between 7am and 9am in the canyon is the best time photographically and the coolest temperature-wise. The main scenic road is occasionally closed for rock-fall checks, especially after rainfall.
Taiwan night markets: what to actually eat
Shilin Night Market in Taipei is the most famous and the most touristy. Go once but do not build your food strategy around it. Raohe Street Night Market (Songshan district) is smaller, more authentic, and has the best pepper pork buns (60 TWD) outside of Tainan. Queue at the stand near the temple entrance.
Tainan's Huayuan Night Market runs every Tuesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The city's signature dishes: coffin bread (a hollow toast filled with creamed seafood, 80 TWD), oyster vermicelli (50 TWD), and shrimp rolls (70 TWD) are best here. Tainan restaurants close earlier than Taipei, so aim to eat by 9pm.
Kaohsiung's Ruifeng Night Market in the Zuoying district has local snacks that tourists miss: pork intestine soup, steamed pork on rice, and the best shaved ice in the south. The city's Pier 2 Art District has daytime cafes and the night market runs from 6pm.
Sun Moon Lake: transport, timing, and what to skip
Getting there from Taipei: take the HSR to Taichung (70 minutes, 700 TWD), then Nantou Bus 6670 directly to the lake (90 minutes, 248 TWD). The total journey is about 2.5 hours and significantly cheaper than a private taxi. From Taichung HSR station the bus stop is a 5-minute walk.
The lake loop by bicycle is 29km and takes 3-4 hours at a gentle pace. Bikes rent for 100 to 200 TWD per hour at the Shuishe pier. The most scenic section is the east side of the lake, early morning before tour groups arrive from Taichung. Drone photography is restricted over the lake, which keeps it quieter than it might otherwise be.
Skip the cable car unless you are specifically interested in Formosa Aboriginal Cultural Village adjacent to it. The village is a themed park that does not justify the entrance fee for most travelers. The ferry between Shuishe and Itashao pier runs every 30 minutes (80 TWD) and gives better lake views than the cable car.
East coast Taiwan: what requires a dedicated trip
The east coast (Hualien to Taitung) is separated from Taipei by the Central Mountain Range. Trains run through the mountains and take 2-3 hours from Taipei. The coastal scenery between Hualien and Taitung on Highway 11 is exceptional, best done by scooter or rental car rather than train.
Zhiben hot spring area outside Taitung has natural thermal pools and the Formosan Naruwan Resort. The springs run at 80 to 90 degrees Celsius at source and are genuinely medicinal quality. Budget about 3,000 to 4,000 TWD per night for a good hot spring hotel in this area.
Green Island (30 minutes by ferry from Taitung) has some of the best diving in Taiwan and salt water hot springs you can sit in at ocean's edge. The island has limited accommodation. Book 8-10 weeks ahead for summer weekends. Typhoon season makes August visits risky for ferry cancellations.
Taiwan visa and practical hotel booking tips
Most Western nationalities get 90-day visa-free entry. Nationals of over 50 countries have this arrangement. Check the Bureau of Consular Affairs website for your specific passport. There is no arrival card to fill out, which speeds up immigration considerably.
Taiwan uses New Taiwan Dollar (TWD). Most mid-range hotels accept Visa and Mastercard. Budget guesthouses often prefer cash. ATMs are everywhere and work reliably with international cards (7-Eleven ATMs are the most reliable). The daily ATM withdrawal limit is typically 20,000 TWD ($650).
Book accommodation in Hualien and east coast towns before Taipei. These areas have fewer hotels and sell out faster for weekend dates and public holidays. Taipei has enough accommodation inventory that booking 2-3 weeks ahead is sufficient for most dates except the Lantern Festival and National Day (October 10) weekend.

Taipei is the urban base. Hualien is the gateway to Taroko. Sun Moon Lake is the interior escape. Kenting is the south's beach destination. Each delivers something the others cannot.

Taipei has the infrastructure, the food, and the transport connections. Every major tourist attraction in northern Taiwan is within 2 hours by MRT or bus. The city itself has Shilin Night Market, Elephant Mountain hiking trail (45 minutes from MRT Xiangshan), and the National Palace Museum. Hotel options range from budget guesthouses at 1,200 TWD to luxury at 15,000 TWD per night.
The best food neighborhoods are not in the hotel districts. Da'an is for restaurants, Ximending for street food, and Zhongshan for coffee and small cafes. Stay where your budget fits and eat where you walk to, not where your hotel concierge points you.

Hualien is the gateway city. The gorge is 30km away by road. The city itself has a decent night market, good local restaurants, and a small but charming downtown. Hotels in the city center range from budget at 800 TWD to comfortable mid-range at 3,500 TWD. The Silks Place Taroko inside the national park sits at the gorge entrance and runs 5,000 to 8,000 TWD per night.
The east coast highway south of Hualien toward Taitung is one of the most scenic coastal drives in Asia. Qingshui Cliffs rise 800m directly from the ocean and can be seen from Highway 9. The drive takes 3 hours to Taitung and is best done by rental car or scooter.

Taiwan's oldest city and its most authentic food culture
Tainan was Taiwan's capital for 200 years before Taipei took over. The old city center has Fort Zeelandia, Chihkan Tower, and a network of temples that outnumber any other city in the country. Hotel options are primarily mid-range at 2,000 to 4,500 TWD, since Tainan does not have the luxury hotel inventory of Taipei or Kaohsiung.
The food culture here is deeper than any other Taiwanese city. Local specialties include coffin bread, oyster vermicelli, shrimp rolls, and the city's own style of brown sugar glutinous rice cakes. Most restaurants close by 9pm, much earlier than Taipei. Eat early and eat often.

Sun Moon Lake in Nantou County is the central Taiwan highlight. The lake sits at 762m altitude, surrounded by forested mountains, and the cycling loop is one of the most popular one-day activities in the country. Hotels range from guesthouses at 2,500 TWD to The Lalu resort at 6,000 to 8,000 TWD per night. Sunset from The Lalu terrace is one of the best views in Taiwan.
Alishan in Chiayi County is the other central Taiwan draw: sunrise above the clouds from Zhushan Station requires a 3:30am departure on the forest railway but delivers genuinely extraordinary light. Accommodation in the Alishan Forest Recreation Area is limited; book 4-6 weeks ahead for weekend dates.

The main beach area has Nanwan for swimming and Baisha Bay for snorkeling. Hotels cluster on and around the main Kenting Street, which also hosts a nightly market.
The weather here is reliably warmer than the north. January temperatures are 20-24 degrees Celsius, making it the country's warm-weather escape in winter. Weekend prices during winter can match summer rates. Kaohsiung Airport is 90 minutes away by bus and offers cheap flights from Taipei (from 700 TWD with low-cost carriers).

Culture
Tainan has more temples per square kilometer than any other city in Taiwan. The Anping District (former Dutch colonial fort) and Chihkan Tower sit 15 minutes walk apart. Taipei's National Palace Museum holds 700,000 artifacts from imperial China and requires at least 4 hours to do justice. Plan 2 full days in Tainan for a serious cultural visit.
Romantic
The Lalu resort at Sun Moon Lake has infinity-pool views over the water at dusk that are genuinely hard to beat. Silks Place Taroko in the gorge surrounds you with marble cliffs and river sounds. Both book out for Valentine's Day and anniversary weekends 2-3 months ahead. Budget 6,000 to 8,000 TWD per night.
Family
Kenting is Taiwan's family beach zone: the Formosan Naruwan Resort has hot spring pools, landscaped grounds, and easy access to Nanwan Beach. Leofoo Village Theme Park near Hsinchu is 90 minutes from Taipei and Taiwan's best-maintained theme park. Hualien also has whale-watching tours from April to October suitable for kids over 6.
Budget
Guesthouses in Ximending start at 1,200 TWD ($40) for a private room. The Star Hostel near Taipei Main Station has private rooms from 1,500 TWD with good common areas. Taiwan's night markets make eating incredibly cheap: a full dinner of four different dishes at Raohe or Tonghua markets costs 150 to 300 TWD. The MRT makes expensive central hotels unnecessary.
Beach
Kenting's Baisha Bay has clear water good for snorkeling from October to April. Hualien's Qixingtan Beach is dramatic: dark volcanic pebbles, turquoise water, and the Pacific Ocean. Green Island (30 minutes ferry from Taitung) has Taiwan's best reef diving. Typhoon season (July-September) can close beaches and cancel ferries with short notice.
Foodie
Tainan is the pilgrimage destination: 200-year-old recipes, dishes that exist nowhere else in the country, and a food culture that Taipei chefs travel south to study. In Taipei, the Tonghua Street Night Market and the morning dumpling spots in Zhongshan District are the real finds. Budget 300 to 600 TWD for a serious food crawl at any of Taiwan's major night markets.
Cách chúng tôi đánh giá những khách sạn này
Mỗi khách sạn trong danh sách này đều trải qua cùng một quy trình đánh giá. Đây là cách chúng tôi chấm điểm.
We reviewed 12,000+ Taiwan properties on Booking.com cross-referenced with feedback from Taipei night market crawls, Taroko Gorge trail mornings, and Sun Moon Lake sunrise views. Ten hotels made the final cut.
Spring (Mar-May)
The best combination of comfortable temperatures and minimal crowds. March and April have the best weather in the north. The Alishan cherry blossoms (late March) draw large crowds to the mountain railway. Tomb Sweeping Day (early April) is a public holiday: expect full trains and higher prices around that weekend. May gets humid in the south but remains comfortable in Taipei and Hualien.
Summer (Jun-Aug)
Hot, humid, and typhoon-prone. Taiwan averages 3 to 5 significant typhoons per year, mostly between July and September. East coast trips (Hualien, Taitung, Green Island) are most affected since typhoon approaches shut down ferries and roads into Taroko Gorge. North and central Taiwan mountain areas can flood. Beach season at Kenting is peak, with hotel prices reflecting it.
Autumn (Sep-Nov)
October and November are the best months in Taiwan. Temperatures are comfortable, typhoon season ends after mid-September, and the mountain areas are clear. National Day (October 10) is a long weekend with domestic travel heavy: book trains and east coast accommodation well ahead. Sun Moon Lake autumn light is exceptional for cycling.
Winter (Dec-Feb)
Northern Taiwan is cool and rainy in winter. Kenting is warm (22-26 degrees) and becomes the domestic escape destination: prices spike during winter weekends. Chinese New Year (January or February) shuts down many local restaurants and the entire country travels. If visiting during CNY, book accommodation 2-3 months ahead and expect everything to be more expensive and crowded.

Book east coast accommodation before Taipei
Hualien, Taitung, and the Zhiben hot spring area have far less hotel inventory than Taipei. Silks Place Taroko books out 6-8 weeks ahead for summer weekends and Golden Week (late September/early October). Plan your east coast nights first, then organize your Taipei stay around it. Taipei always has rooms available; Hualien does not.
The airport express and EasyCard are worth buying immediately
Buy a Taoyuan Airport MRT ticket (160 TWD to Taipei Main Station, 35 minutes) and an EasyCard reloadable transit card as your first act on arrival. EasyCards work on MRT, city buses, some taxis, and 7-Eleven stores. Load 500 TWD to start. Returning the card at the airport refunds your balance minus 20 TWD.
Typhoon season travel insurance is not optional
Travel insurance with weather-related cancellation cover is essential for July to September visits. Typhoons cancel flights with 24-36 hours notice and close east coast transport immediately. Most airlines offer free rebooking for typhoon-affected flights, but hotels are inconsistent on refunds. Get a policy that covers accommodation cancellations, not just flights.
The HSR gets you to Tainan and Kaohsiung in 90 minutes
Taiwan High Speed Rail (HSR) runs from Taipei to Zuoying (Kaohsiung) in 90 minutes for 1,490 TWD. To Tainan it takes 75 minutes (1,350 TWD). Reserved seats can be booked 28 days ahead on the HSR app or website. Unreserved seats are available for walk-up passengers but fill up during Golden Week and Chinese New Year.
Scooter rental in Hualien and the east coast is far better than buses
Bus coverage in Hualien and Taitung is limited to a few routes that miss most coastal highlights. Scooter rental runs 300 to 400 TWD per day and requires a valid motorcycle or car license. The coastal Highway 11 between Hualien and Taitung (195km, 3-4 hours) is one of the most spectacular drives in Asia and essentially impossible to experience properly by public transport.
Taipei's hotel breakfast packages save real money
Mid-range Taipei hotels offer breakfast packages at booking for 250 to 400 TWD per person. The same meal ordered at the restaurant costs 450 to 700 TWD. Taiwanese hotel breakfasts typically mix Western options (eggs, bread, coffee) with local items (congee, scallion pancakes, fresh fruit). Worth adding when booking, especially for stays of 3 or more nights.
Câu hỏi thường gặp về khách sạn tại Taiwan
Câu trả lời thẳng thắn từ đội ngũ của chúng tôi.
What is the best area to stay in Taipei?
Ximending is the pick for first-timers: pedestrian shopping streets, 24-hour food stalls, and the Ximen MRT station connects you everywhere in under 20 minutes. Da'an District is quieter with better restaurants and the night market on Tonghua Street. Zhongshan is mid-city and good for mid-range hotels with easy airport access. Skip Zhonghe and Yonghe unless someone is putting you up there specifically.
How much does a hotel in Taipei cost per night?
Budget guesthouses in Ximending start around 1,200 to 2,000 TWD ($40-65). Mid-range business hotels like Novotel or Caesar Park run 3,000 to 5,000 TWD. Luxury options like Grand Hyatt or W Taipei go 8,000 to 15,000 TWD per night. Hotel prices jump 30-40% during the Lantern Festival (January-February) and Golden Week in October.
Is Taroko Gorge worth making a base in Hualien?
Absolutely. Taroko is one of Asia's most dramatic landscapes: marble canyon walls, jade-green river, and trails ranging from 30-minute walks to full-day ridge hikes. The gorge is 30km from Hualien city, reachable by taxi for 400 to 600 TWD one way, or by renting a scooter for 300 to 400 TWD per day. Stay at least 2 nights to cover the Shakadang Trail and Baiyang Waterfall properly.
When is the best time to visit Taiwan?
October to December is the sweet spot. Temperatures sit at 20-28 degrees Celsius in Taipei, typhoon season has ended, and the crowds from summer Golden Week have cleared. Spring (March-May) is also excellent with comfortable temperatures. Avoid July and August: typhoons are frequent and can disrupt travel plans significantly with 24-48 hours notice.
Is Sun Moon Lake worth the trip from Taipei?
Yes, for a 2-night detour. The lake is in the mountains of Nantou County, 3 hours from Taipei by Kuo-Kuang bus or 2.5 hours by HSR to Taichung then taxi. Cycling the 29km lake loop takes 3-4 hours and is genuinely beautiful with mountain forest on one side and the lake on the other. The Thao indigenous village on the lake shore has restaurants serving freshwater fish dishes found nowhere else in Taiwan.
What areas of Taipei should I avoid for hotels?
Wanhua district around Longshan Temple has good temple sightseeing but accommodation quality is inconsistent and the area gets rough at night. Zhonghe and Yonghe are residential suburbs with no tourist infrastructure. The streets immediately east of Taipei Main Station have some budget options but the area is transient and not particularly welcoming.
How does Taiwan's public transport affect hotel location choices?
The Taipei MRT is efficient and covers most areas tourists want. Fare from Taipei Main Station to the airport (Taoyuan Airport MRT) is 160 TWD and takes 35 minutes. Within Taipei, rides average 25 to 40 TWD. Between cities, Taiwan High Speed Rail runs Taipei to Kaohsiung in 90 minutes for 1,490 TWD. Buses cover the east coast and mountain areas the HSR cannot reach.
What is the best budget accommodation in Taiwan?
Guesthouses in Ximending offer private rooms from 1,200 to 1,800 TWD ($40-60). The Star Hostel group has properties near Taipei Main Station with consistent standards. For Hualien, the city center has budget guesthouses from 800 to 1,500 TWD per night close to the train station and night market.
Is Kenting worth staying in the south or better as a day trip?
Worth 2 nights as a stay, pointless as a day trip. Kenting is Taiwan's southernmost tip and the beach area stretches across different coves: Baisha Bay has good snorkeling, Nanwan is the main swimming beach, and the cliff top Eluanbi Lighthouse marks the island's southernmost point. The night market on Kenting Main Street runs every evening and has the island's best satay stalls.
What should I know about checking into Taiwanese hotels?
Taiwanese hotels universally require a passport for check-in. Check-in is typically 3pm and check-out noon, with little negotiation at budget properties. Most mid-range hotels include a substantial breakfast buffet that costs 200 to 350 TWD less than buying separately. Hotels near train stations often offer luggage storage free of charge for the day before and after your stay.
Which Taiwanese city has the best night market food scene?
Tainan is the food capital, genuinely. The city has 10 night markets and the oldest food traditions in Taiwan. Huayuan Night Market runs nightly, and the daytime snack streets around Anping Fort serve oyster vermicelli, shrimp rolls, and milkfish soup that set the standard for the rest of the country. Budget 200 to 400 TWD ($7-13) for a full Tainan street food dinner.
Do hotels in the east coast (Hualien, Taitung) book up quickly?
Yes, much faster than Taipei. There are far fewer properties. Silks Place Taroko books out 4-6 weeks ahead for summer weekends and Taroko Marathon race dates. In Taitung, the Zhiben hot spring area fills up on autumn weekends when domestic tourists escape the summer heat. Book east coast accommodation first when planning your Taiwan trip, then organize Taipei around it.
