Additionally, you need a GBAO permit if traveling to Gorno-Badakhshan, which covers the Pamir Highway east of Dushanbe and the entire Wakhan Corridor. The GBAO permit can be added to your visa application for a small fee. Citizens of around 60 countries can enter visa-free for up to 30 days.

The Wakhan Corridor is a narrow strip of Afghan territory between Tajikistan and Pakistan, bordered by the Hindu Kush and the Pamirs. On the Tajik side, the village of Ishkashim is the gateway, about 250 kilometers from Khorog. Getting there requires a GBAO permit, a 4x4 vehicle, and ideally a local driver. The Panjshanbe Bazaar is one of Central Asia's largest markets and is best visited Thursday or Saturday when it is at full capacity. Both hotels can arrange local transport.

Avoid anything claiming to be central Dushanbe but located near the airport, as the distance adds unnecessary taxi costs. Skip any guesthouse on the Pamir Highway without a GBAO permit connection because staff at legitimate places help you navigate this requirement. Be wary of unverified listings on booking platforms for remote areas like Murghab and the Wakhan. Email directly and confirm.
