Fly into Moshoeshoe I International Airport, 18 kilometres south of Maseru on the Mazenod Road, or cross overland at Maseru Bridge from Ladybrand, South Africa. One night in Maseru gives you enough time to get cash on Kingsway, grab a sim card, and eat a decent meal.
Don't overthink Maseru. It's a working capital city, not a tourist showpiece. Get your bearings near Kingsway Road and Pioneer Road, then point yourself toward the highlands the next morning. The country earns its reputation once you leave the city.
The highland lodges: what to expect
Highland lodges in Lesotho operate differently from city hotels. Most are semi-remote, most include at least one meal, and many require a 4x4 or high-clearance vehicle to reach. Malealea Lodge in the Malealea Valley and Semonkong Lodge near Maletsunyane Falls both sit at the end of unpaved roads that punish ordinary sedans.

Maseru neighbourhoods: the honest breakdown
Kingsway is the spine of Maseru and the most convenient place to stay. Lancer's Inn sits right on it, the main supermarkets are a 5-minute walk, and taxis are always around. The Hilton neighbourhood, up the hill from Kingsway, is quieter and more residential. that's where the Lesotho Sun sits and where expats tend to live.
Avoid booking anything near the Maseru bus rank on Moshoeshoe Road unless you're catching an early combi. The area is noisy from 5am and accommodation there caters to local commuters, not visitors. The Industrial Area has Kick4Life Hotel, which is fine on price but adds 15-20 minutes to every trip into the city centre.
Lesotho in winter: snow, ski, and cold nights
June through August brings snow to the highlands and genuine cold even in Maseru at 1,600 metres. Night temps drop to -5°C or lower at Afriski near Mahlasela Pass. Pack a proper down jacket, not just a fleece, regardless of what month the weather app says.
Afriski Mountain Resort is the only ski area in southern Africa south of the equator. July is peak season. weekends sell out 6-8 weeks in advance and rates jump to $260-380/night. Come in early June for lower prices and fewer crowds, and you'll still get snow.
Pony trekking and what to book first
Basotho ponies are the original highland transport, and riding one through the Malealea Valley or up to a village near Semonkong is the single best thing you can do in Lesotho. Both Malealea Lodge and Semonkong Lodge run the treks, starting at around $25-40 per person for a half-day.
Book your trek at the same time as your room. Guides are limited and summer weekends in particular get booked up. Wear long trousers. saddle chafe is a real problem on the multi-day routes. and bring sunscreen, because the highland sun at 2,000+ metres is brutal even on overcast days.
Getting the most from a Lesotho road trip
The Roof of Africa route connecting Maseru, Mohale Dam, Semonkong, and Malealea takes 3-5 days and covers some of the most dramatic mountain scenery on the continent. Fuel up every time you see a petrol station. gaps of 80-100 kilometres between stations are common on the highland routes.
A 4x4 is strongly recommended for anything beyond the main A1 national road. The road to Malealea Valley is gravel and rocky for the last 30 kilometres. Most highland lodges can arrange transfers from Maseru for around $60-100 one-way if you don't want to drive yourself.

December through February brings warm days to the lowlands and afternoon thunderstorms to the highlands. The highlands are green and spectacular, but the gravel roads to Malealea and Semonkong can become impassable after heavy rain. Autumn (March-May)
This is the sweet spot. Rains ease off, roads dry out, highland landscapes are still green, and prices drop noticeably across most lodges. Always carry cash in the highlands

Maseru Bridge from Ladybrand is the main crossing and can take 30-90 minutes on weekends. Caledonspoort near Ficksburg is quieter and only 45 kilometres from Maseru. If you're heading straight to the Leribe district or Ts'ehlanyane, Ficksburg cuts significant time off your drive.
The 4x4 question: be honest with yourself
The A1 national road from Maseru to Oxbow is paved and manageable in a regular car for 80% of the year. But Malealea, Mohale Lodge, and Ts'ehlanyane all involve gravel roads that become genuinely dangerous after rain. Rent a 4x4 from Maseru for $80-120/day if you're doing a highland circuit between November and March.
