Nên ở đâu tại Papua New Guinea

Khu vực bạn chọn quan trọng hơn bản thân khách sạn.

First time in PNG: where to actually start

Most people land at Jacksons International Airport and get funneled into Port Moresby. That's fine. Airways Hotel in the Jackson's Airport Precinct makes the transition easy, and you can be in your room 8 minutes after clearing customs. Don't book yourself into central Port Moresby thinking you'll explore on foot. It doesn't work like that here.

Spend one night in Moresby max, then fly. Kokopo is the easiest next step: safe, scenic, historically fascinating, and a genuine introduction to PNG's diversity. From there you can loop north toward Madang or east toward Milne Bay depending on whether diving or river culture is your priority. We've seen too many first-timers burn their whole trip in Port Moresby waiting for domestic flights they could have pre-booked.

Diving PNG: Kimbe Bay vs. Tufi vs. Milne Bay

These are three completely different dive experiences. Kimbe Bay off Walindi Plantation Resort in West New Britain is big pelagics, coral walls, and world-class macro. Tufi Resort's fjord reefs near Cape Nelson are sheltered, eerie, and full of WWII wreck sites within 20 minutes boat ride. Alotau in Milne Bay sits at the top of the Coral Triangle and is the gateway to the annual Alotau Canoe and Kundu Festival in November.

If you can only do one, Kimbe Bay is the most consistently rewarding. Walindi's dive operation has been running since the 1980s and the guides know every cleaning station and critter spot on the bay. But Tufi's combination of fjord scenery and reef diving is unlike anything else in the Pacific. and at $260-340/night it's serious money well spent.

Getting around PNG without losing your mind

Flying is your primary tool. Air Niugini covers the main routes: Port Moresby to Madang takes 55 minutes, Moresby to Kokopo is 75 minutes, and the Moresby to Tufi hop on a charter takes about 45 minutes. Road travel is feasible in some regions. the Highlands Highway between Lae and Mount Hagen is paved and used regularly. but it's slow and not always safe for tourists traveling alone.

PMVs are the local bus system: cheap, crowded, and authentic. A PMV ride within Port Moresby costs 1-2 kina (roughly $0.30-0.60). Taxis in Moresby run $10-25 for most urban trips depending on distance. For anything outside the main cities, arrange transport through your hotel. they'll have trusted drivers and will know current road conditions.

PNG's Highlands: what no one tells you before you go

The Highlands region. Mount Hagen, Goroka, Tari. is culturally the richest part of PNG and also the most misunderstood. The Goroka Show in September and the Mount Hagen Cultural Show in August draw hundreds of sing-sing groups from across the country. Book accommodation in Mount Hagen or Goroka at least 6 weeks before these events because the town fills up fast and prices double. Temperatures in the Highlands drop to 10-14°C at night year-round, so pack layers regardless of when you go.

We don't currently have vetted hotels in the Highlands on this list, which reflects the genuine shortage of consistently reliable accommodation there. Most lodges operate seasonally or cater primarily to NGO and mission workers. If you're going, use a reputable PNG-based tour operator who can pre-vet your lodging and provide a local guide. this isn't a region to freelance.

How to choose between Port Moresby's neighborhoods

Port Moresby has distinct zones and they genuinely differ. The Jackson's Airport Precinct is convenient for transit but sterile. Ela Beach is the most scenic urban area in Moresby. the waterfront along Ela Beach Road is walkable by day and the suburb has the city's best restaurants within a short taxi ride. Waigani is the government and embassy district, safe and functional but not particularly interesting.

Granville, where the Granville Motel sits, is a working-class suburb about 15 minutes drive from the central business district. It's fine for budget travelers who just need a base. rates run $55-85/night and it's honest about what it is. Don't expect resort amenities. The Papua New Guinea Club Ted Diro on Ela Beach is the polar opposite: $285-380/night, waterfront position, and the closest thing Moresby has to a genuine luxury address.

The Sepik River: one of the great travel experiences left on earth

The Sepik is to PNG what the Amazon is to Brazil. except fewer tourists know about it. The river runs 1,126km from the Central Highlands to the north coast, passing through villages where traditional spirit house culture is still practiced daily. Karawari Lodge in East Sepik Province is the anchor point for serious Sepik travel. The lodge sits on a tributary of the Sepik itself, accessible via Karawari airstrip, and village tours from here cover regions most travelers never reach.

Expect to pay $180-240/night at Karawari, but that includes meals and guided river excursions. The real cost is the charter flight from Port Moresby or Wewak, which adds $150-300 return depending on aircraft and timing. Go May-October when river levels are manageable and the main Sepik roads between Wewak and Pagwi are passable. This is not a trip to rush.

Khu vực khách sạn tốt nhất của Papua New Guinea

Start in Port Moresby if you need to, but don't linger. The real PNG is up the Sepik, around Milne Bay, and on the Kokopo coast.

Port Moresby 3 khách sạn được xác minh

The unavoidable gateway. make it work for you, not against you.

Port Moresby is where most PNG trips begin and it's a city that rewards preparation. The Ela Beach waterfront is the nicest part of town by a significant margin. the Papua New Guinea Club Ted Diro sits right on that strip and it shows in every way. For transit travelers, the Jackson's Airport Precinct with Airways Hotel is genuinely the smartest play: you're 8 minutes from your departure gate and the hotel has the infrastructure to match.

Granville is the budget option and it's honest about that. The Granville Motel on Nita Street runs $55-85/night and serves the traveler who needs a clean bed and a secure car park, not a spa. It's about 20 minutes drive from Ela Beach in light traffic. Don't book Granville expecting Waigani-level services.

Avoid the unvetted guesthouses around Gordons and the Boroko corridor. We've tracked multiple complaints about security incidents and misrepresented facilities in that zone. Stick to the three neighborhoods above and use hotel-arranged taxis to move between them.

Best areas Ela Beach, Jackson's Airport Precinct, Waigani
Price range $55-380/night
Best for Transit, Business, Luxury
Avoid Gordons, Boroko (unvetted guesthouses with poor security)

Kokopo & East New Britain 1 khách sạn được xác minh

Volcanic history, beachfront living, and the best-located resort in PNG.

Kokopo replaced Rabaul as the provincial capital after the 1994 Tavurvur eruption buried half the old town under ash. That sounds grim but it's created one of the most dramatically interesting regions in the Pacific. The drive from Kokopo along the Kokopo-Rabaul Road takes you past the half-buried St. George's Church, steaming volcanic vents, and a black-sand coastline that genuinely stops you in your tracks.

Kokopo Beach Bungalows Resort has a Blanche Bay waterfront position that other properties in PNG simply can't match at $145-200/night. It's 15 minutes walk from the Kokopo War Museum and 25 minutes drive from the Rabaul Volcano Observatory on Tunnel Hill Road. The resort's bungalow layout means you're not sharing walls with strangers. a genuine plus in this price range.

The Kokopo market near the town center is one of the most accessible and friendly markets in PNG for tourists. Go on a Saturday morning between 7am and 10am when the produce and bilum bag sellers are out in full. Ask your hotel to arrange a day trip to the Baining Mountains Fire Dance ceremonies. they run on most full-moon nights in villages about 45 minutes inland.

Best areas Kokopo waterfront, Rabaul Corridor
Price range $145-200/night
Best for History, beach, cultural tourism
Avoid Rabaul town center after dark (poor lighting, uneven roads from eruption damage)

Madang & the North Coast 1 khách sạn được xác minh

Calm lagoon, colonial-era charm, and PNG's most underrated dive scene.

Madang sits on a peninsula jutting into a sheltered lagoon and it's genuinely one of the prettiest towns in the Pacific. The town center has a grid of tree-lined streets from the German colonial era. Coastwatcher Avenue runs along the waterfront and is worth a slow walk at dusk. Madang Lodge in the Town Centre is about 10 minutes walk from the lagoon and puts you in the middle of all of it.

The diving around Madang is consistently underrated. The WWII wrecks in the harbor. including a B-25 bomber in the shallows near Dallman Passage. are accessible by local dive operators at a fraction of what you'd pay in Kimbe. Madang Lodge at $75-110/night is the best value base in all of PNG for the quality of access it gives you.

The local PMV network in Madang is more navigable than Port Moresby's. a shared ride to the Coastwatcher Memorial on Coronation Drive costs about 1-2 kina. The Saturday market near the main bus stop is a legitimate cultural experience with garden produce, fresh fish, and artifacts from the Sepik region that filter down the coast.

Best areas Town Centre, Coastwatcher Avenue

Best for Diving, history, budget travel
Avoid Unlit waterfront areas past the Coastwatcher Memorial after dark

Milne Bay & Alotau 1 khách sạn được xác minh

The Coral Triangle's doorstep. calmer, cheaper, and more authentic than you'd expect.

Alotau is the capital of Milne Bay Province and the jumping-off point for some of the best reef diving in the world. The town sits at the western end of Milne Bay itself, about 15 minutes drive from Alotau Airport along the coastal road. Alotau Leisure Lodge occupies a hillside position in the Milne Bay area with views over the bay that you won't find mentioned enough in standard travel coverage.

The Alotau Canoe and Kundu Festival every November brings outrigger canoe races, traditional music, and village performers from across Milne Bay Province to the foreshore near the main market. Book your accommodation 8-10 weeks ahead for that week. the Lodge fills up and prices firm up noticeably. Outside festival season, $105-155/night is fair for what you get.

Day trips from Alotau to the outer islands. Samarai, China Strait, Kwato Island. run $30-60 per person by local boat. The Kwato Island Mission, about 40 minutes by dinghy, is one of the most atmospheric sites in PNG and rarely appears in standard itineraries. Ask the Lodge staff to connect you with a trusted local boatman rather than booking through intermediaries.

Best areas Milne Bay waterfront, Alotau town center

West New Britain & Kimbe Bay 1 khách sạn được xác minh

The world's best dive bay. remote, serious, and absolutely worth the trip.

Kimbe Bay is a 40km-wide volcanic bay off the north coast of West New Britain and it contains more coral species than the entire Caribbean. Walindi Plantation Resort sits on the eastern shore near Walindi village, roughly 30 minutes drive from Hoskins Airport along the Hoskins-Kimbe Road. It's a working plantation resort. oil palm surrounds the property. but step onto the dive boat and the world-class reef system is 10 minutes away.

This is a couples and serious diver destination. The resort's bungalows are spacious and genuinely romantic, positioned among tropical gardens right on the bay. At $195-245/night it's mid-to-upper range but the included breakfasts, the dive infrastructure, and the setting justify every dollar.

Don't come to Kimbe Bay expecting a beach resort with evening entertainment. The isolation is the point. The nearest significant town is Kimbe itself, about 45 minutes east, but most guests don't go there. Bring books, bring dive certification, and leave your itinerary loose. weather in West New Britain shifts fast and flexibility makes for the best trips.

Best areas Walindi shoreline, Kimbe Bay eastern reef system
Price range $195-245/night
Best for Diving, couples, eco-tourism
Avoid Visiting June-August without booking dive spots in advance. it's peak season and operators fill up

Tufi & Cape Nelson 1 khách sạn được xác minh

Fjord scenery, WWII wrecks, and reef diving in one of PNG's most striking settings.

Tufi sits at the tip of a peninsula on the Oro Province coast, surrounded by flooded volcanic craters called fjords. These are genuine fjords. steep-walled, deep, calm. and they make the setting at Tufi Resort unlike anything else in PNG. The resort is right on the fjord rim, about 5 minutes walk from the Tufi airstrip and a short boat ride from the best reef and wreck dive sites.

At $260-340/night, Tufi Resort is our most expensive vetted pick outside Port Moresby and it earns it. The WWII Beaufort bomber wreck in Tufi Harbour is accessible even for snorkelers. Village walks to Tufi cultural sites, tapa cloth demonstrations, and ceremonial events are arranged directly by the resort. this isn't packaged tourism, it's a genuine community relationship.

Getting here requires a charter or scheduled flight from Port Moresby. MAF (Mission Aviation Fellowship) operates Tufi routes and so does Air Sanga. Budget $120-200 return for the 45-minute flight. The airstrip is short and conditions-dependent, so build buffer days into your itinerary. More than a few travelers have extended their stay involuntarily because the weather closed in. and most of them say it was the best thing that happened to them.

Best areas Tufi fjord rim, Cape Nelson peninsula
Price range $260-340/night
Best for Luxury, diving, cultural immersion
Avoid Tight flight connections out of Tufi. the airstrip closes in poor visibility and delays are common

Khi nào nên đến Papua New Guinea: Từng mùa

Giá khách sạn, mức độ đông đúc và thời tiết thay đổi theo mùa.

Budget Friendly

Wet Season (January-March)

Avg hotel: $75-180/nightCrowds: LowTemp: 27-34°C coast

Rates drop to their annual floor. $75-180/night across most properties. but there are real trade-offs. The Sepik floods severely, making Karawari Lodge's village tours limited or cancelled. The Highlands Highway gets washouts between Lae and Goroka. Port Moresby and Kokopo remain functional, and if a cheap coastal stay is all you need, January-February delivers. Just don't plan anything that requires internal road transfers.

Warming Up

Transition (April)

Avg hotel: $90-200/nightCrowds: LowTemp: 25-31°C coast

April is the turning point. rain eases in most coastal regions and the first clear dive days of the season appear in Kimbe Bay and around Tufi. Prices haven't caught up to demand yet, running $90-200/night across most vetted properties. It's a legitimate sweet spot if you're flexible on dates and willing to accept that some days will still be grey and wet. Madang is particularly good in April: the lagoon clears up and the town is quiet.

Cách đặt khách sạn tại Papua New Guinea

Chiến lược đặt phòng thông minh cho Papua New Guinea.

Book domestic flights before your international ticket

Air Niugini and PNG Air routes to Tufi, Kimbe, and Karawari have limited seat capacity. sometimes 12-19 seats on the whole aircraft. We've seen travelers book intercontinental flights to Port Moresby and then find the Tufi or Karawari leg is sold out for their entire travel window. Lock in your internal PNG routing first, then build your international connections around it. Expect $80-300 per domestic leg depending on route.

Get kina cash before leaving Port Moresby

ATMs exist in Port Moresby at the Vision City Mall on Waigani Drive and near the main BSP Bank on Douglas Street, but they're unreliable in regional towns. Madang has functional ATMs but Kokopo, Alotau, and Lae can be hit-or-miss. Karawari Lodge and Tufi Resort accept cards but charge a processing fee. Withdraw enough kina (100 kina ≈ $27) to cover tips, market purchases, and a buffer in Port Moresby before you fly anywhere regional.

The Highlands Cultural Shows require 6 weeks advance planning

The Mount Hagen Cultural Show (August) and the Goroka Show (September) are among the most extraordinary cultural events in the world, but accommodation in both towns is genuinely limited. Most quality guesthouses in Mount Hagen have under 30 rooms total. Contact lodges directly. many don't have updated online booking systems. and expect to pay 30-50% above normal rack rates during show week. Going without a confirmed bed is a serious mistake.

Use hotel-recommended taxis, not street hails

In Port Moresby, Lae, and even Madang, flagging down unmarked taxis from the street carries real risk. Every vetted hotel on our list has relationships with trusted drivers. use them. A hotel-arranged taxi from Airways Hotel to the Vision City Mall in Waigani costs $15-20 and the driver is accountable. A random street taxi for the same trip might cost $10 and might not arrive where you intended.

Pack malaria prevention seriously

Malaria is present throughout PNG below 1,500m elevation. that includes Port Moresby, Madang, Kokopo, Alotau, Kimbe, and Tufi. Start your antimalarials before departure as directed (typically 1-2 weeks prior for most prophylaxis regimens). Every vetted property on our list provides mosquito nets or screens, but you need pharmaceutical cover as well. Visit a travel health clinic at least 4 weeks before departure. not the week before.

Stay on the PNG Club Ted Diro side of Ela Beach for Moresby dining

The Ela Beach precinct around the Papua New Guinea Club Ted Diro has the highest concentration of quality restaurants in Port Moresby within a 10-minute walk. Duffy's Bar on the waterfront strip, the dining room at the NCD Governor's precinct nearby, and several expatriate-frequented spots on Lawes Road are all reachable on foot from Ela Beach during daylight. Don't venture past the Yacht Club toward the Koki market area on foot after 6pm.

Câu hỏi thường gặp về khách sạn tại Papua New Guinea

Câu trả lời thẳng thắn từ đội ngũ của chúng tôi.

What's the safest area to stay in Port Moresby?

Stick to the Ela Beach precinct, the Waigani diplomatic strip, or the Jackson's Airport corridor. These three zones have security infrastructure that most of Port Moresby's other neighborhoods simply don't. Budget at least $55-160/night for a property that takes access control seriously. Avoid staying in Gordons or Boroko unless you have a specific reason and local contacts.

When is the best time to visit Papua New Guinea?

May through October is the dry season across most of PNG and the clear winner for travel. The Highlands get cold at night. down to 10°C in Mount Hagen. but coastal regions like Madang and Kokopo sit comfortably at 24-29°C. Hotels in popular dive spots like Kimbe Bay and Tufi run 15-20% cheaper in May-June before the school holiday rush hits in July. Avoid February and March if you're headed to the Sepik: the river floods and road access to remote lodges becomes unreliable.

How do I get between Port Moresby and regional destinations?

Air Niugini and PNG Air connect Port Moresby's Jacksons International Airport to Madang, Lae, Kokopo, Tufi, and Kimbe. A one-way domestic flight runs $80-220 depending on route and how far out you book. There's no reliable intercity bus network. PMVs (Public Motor Vehicles) exist but aren't practical for tourists moving between major destinations. Book flights at least 3 weeks out; last-minute fares to places like Tufi can spike to $350+.

Is it worth staying in Lae or should I just pass through?

Lae is PNG's second city and the business hub for Morobe Province, sitting along the Huon Gulf coastline near the Markham Valley. It's not a leisure destination, but if you're heading into the Highlands or managing logistics along the Highlands Highway, Top Town is where you want to base yourself. The Lae International Hotel on 2nd Street puts you 10 minutes walk from the main markets and banking district. Budget $130-185/night for anything with reliable security.

What are the best dive destinations and which hotels are closest?

Kimbe Bay in West New Britain is consistently rated among the top 10 dive sites globally, with over 400 coral species recorded around the Walindi reef system. Walindi Plantation Resort sits right on the bay, 5 minutes from the main dive jetty. Tufi's fjord-side reefs are less crowded and equally spectacular. Tufi Resort has its own dive operation on-site. Both properties run $195-340/night but include significant dive packages that make the per-dive cost very competitive.

What's the difference between staying in Kokopo versus Rabaul?

Rabaul town is largely buried under 1994 volcanic ash and most of its infrastructure never fully recovered. Kokopo, 20 minutes drive east along the Kokopo-Rabaul Road, is the functioning regional capital of East New Britain and where you'll find proper accommodation. The Kokopo Beach Bungalows Resort sits right on the Blanche Bay waterfront, 15 minutes walk from the Kokopo market and war museum. Staying in Kokopo and day-tripping to the Tavurvur volcano rim and Rabaul's eerie buried streets is the right call.

How much should I budget per day in Papua New Guinea?

A bare-bones day in Port Moresby. budget guesthouse in Granville, PMV transport, local market food at Gerehu or Gordons. runs $60-80. A mid-range day with a proper hotel, taxis, and sit-down meals in Waigani or near the Vision City Mall area runs $150-220. Luxury travel around the Sepik or at Tufi Resort, with chartered flights and guided activities, can hit $500-700/day easily. Food at local markets costs $2-5 for a full plate of rice and greens.

Do hotels in PNG have reliable electricity and internet?

Honestly, it varies more here than almost anywhere else in the Pacific. Top-tier properties like Airways Hotel and Tufi Resort have generator backup that kicks in within seconds. Mid-range places in Madang and Lae often have patchy supply, especially during wet season storms between December and March. Always ask specifically about generator cover and WiFi speed before booking. don't assume a $150/night price tag guarantees either.

Is it safe to walk around Port Moresby?

Walking alone in Port Moresby after dark is not recommended anywhere. During the day, the Ela Beach waterfront, the precinct around the National Museum on Waigani Drive, and the Vision City Mall in Waigani are generally fine with normal urban awareness. Avoid walking through Gordons, Sabama, or the streets around Koki market at any hour if you're unfamiliar with the city. Most quality hotels in Port Moresby will arrange trusted taxis. use them.

What's the deal with the Karawari Lodge. is it really that remote?

Yes. Karawari Lodge in East Sepik Province is accessible only by small charter plane to the Karawari airstrip, then a short boat transfer up the Karawari River. The nearest town of any size is Ambunti, roughly 60km away by river. You're paying $180-240/night to be genuinely off-grid in one of the most culturally intact river regions on earth. Book through a PNG-based operator who handles the charter logistics. doing it independently is technically possible but adds a lot of stress.

What local customs should hotel guests know about?

PNG has over 800 distinct language groups and customs vary significantly by region, but a few things apply broadly. Dress modestly outside of resort pools. shoulders and knees covered is the baseline in towns like Madang and Alotau. Always ask before photographing people, especially at village markets along the Sepik or in the Eastern Highlands. If a lodge staff member offers to connect you with a local guide, take it seriously: independent wandering in unfamiliar areas, even scenic ones near Tufi or along the Kokoda Track approach roads, carries real risks.

Which PNG regions are best for birdwatching?

The Tari Basin in Hela Province is the gold standard for birds-of-paradise, with over 40 species recorded within a 30km radius of Tari town. The Sepik floodplains around Karawari are equally extraordinary for water birds and forest species. Most serious birders base themselves at lodges near Kumul Lodge in the Western Highlands (not on our current vetted list but worth knowing) or use Karawari Lodge as their Sepik base. September-November offers the best combination of dry weather and active bird display behavior.
