Everyone books Old Town because it looks perfect on Instagram. And it is photogenic. cobblestones on Mārstaļu iela, the Daugava riverfront, the Dom Cathedral square at dusk. But Old Town hotels charge a premium for location and sometimes deliver rooms the size of a ferry cabin.
The smarter play: compare what's actually within walking distance before paying the Old Town markup. The Art Nouveau district on Alberta iela is 20 minutes by foot and the hotels there are quieter, larger, and often $40-60/night cheaper. We've seen this mistake hundreds of times. tourists book Old Town expecting a luxury experience and get a tiny, overpriced room.
Jūrmala vs Riga: which base makes sense for you
Jūrmala is Latvia's beach town, 25 km from Riga, and it's genuinely lovely in summer. Majori is the strip to be in. Jomas iela is walkable, lined with cafes and restaurants, and the beach is 5 minutes from your hotel door. Hotels here run $65-95/night in the sweet spot of June-August.
But if you're not beach-focused, staying in Jūrmala makes little sense. The train back to Riga runs until late and costs under €2, but you're still adding 30 minutes each way to everything. Stay in Riga, take a day trip to Jūrmala on a sunny afternoon. Simple.
Sigulda and Cēsis: Latvia's most underrated overnight stop
Most visitors do Sigulda as a day trip from Riga. That's a shame, because staying overnight completely changes it. The cable car over the Gauja valley, the Turaida Castle at sunrise, the forest trails with nobody on them. you get none of that on a rushed day trip. Kolonna Hotel Sigulda sits right in the town centre, 15 minutes walk from the cable car.
Cēsis is even quieter. Hotel Cesis is steps from the medieval castle ruins on Pils laukums, and the town's old guild buildings and craft beer spots make for a genuinely good evening. Rates at both hotels run $100-155/night. For a two-night trip out of Riga, do Sigulda first night, Cēsis second.
Latvia's west coast: Liepāja and Ventspils explained
Both cities are on the Baltic coast and both get overlooked. Liepāja is the wilder of the two. the Karosta district alone (a former Soviet naval base) is worth a half-day. Roze Hotel sits in the city centre, about 15 minutes walk to the main beach and 10 minutes from the Karosta bridge. It's a solid base at $110-160/night.
Ventspils is cleaner, newer, and better for spa breaks. Kurshi Hotel and Spa is the best property in the city, with a real wellness facility attached. The beach is 10 minutes walk from the hotel. How to avoid Latvia's most common hotel mistakes
First mistake: booking a 'beachfront' hotel in Jūrmala without checking whether it actually faces the beach or the street behind it. Second mistake: assuming all Old Town Riga hotels are the same. Grand Palace on Pils iela and Wellton a few streets away are worlds apart in price and experience. Read the room descriptions, not just the star count.
Third mistake: skipping breakfast comparison. Riga has great café culture on Tērbatas iela and around Miera iela in Purvciems. you can eat a proper Latvian breakfast for €5-8 and skip the €14 hotel buffet entirely. And fourth: travelling in July without booking at least 3 weeks out. Riga fills fast during the Song and Dance Festival years.
Latvia for first-timers: a practical two-night base strategy
Two nights minimum in Riga. Walk the Old Town, climb St. Peter's Church on Skārņu iela for the city view, do the Art Nouveau district on Alberta iela in the afternoon. On day two, take the train to Jūrmala for a beach morning, come back for dinner. This covers the essentials without rushing.
If you've got a third night, add Sigulda. The train from Rīgas Centrālā stacija takes 1.5 hours, and Kolonna Hotel Sigulda is a 5-minute walk from the station. Book your Riga hotel first. it's the tightest market, especially in summer. and fill in the Sigulda leg after.

Riga is the obvious starting point and for good reason. Centrs, the neighbourhood stretching north from Old Town toward Alberta iela, is the Art Nouveau heartland. This is where Hotel Bergs sits on Elizabetes iela. more refined, quieter at night, and easier to navigate than the Old Town warren. It's a 10-minute walk to the Old Town from here.
Avoid the blocks immediately around Rīgas Centrālā stacija. Budget hotels cluster here for the train access, but the area is scruffy and you'd be walking 25 minutes to Old Town every day. Pay a bit more and stay on the right side of Brīvības bulvāris.

Liepāja is the cultural wild card. It has a music scene, a fascinating Soviet military history in Karosta, and a long beach that rivals Jūrmala without the crowds. Both cities are roughly 3 hours from Riga by bus, so they work better as dedicated stops than day trips. The Lux Express bus to Liepāja costs around €10-16 and is the easiest option. If you're driving, the coastal road between Ventspils and Liepāja through Cape Kolka is one of the best drives in the Baltics.

Valmiera is a medium-sized city in northern Latvia that most international tourists skip entirely. That's exactly why it works. Hotel Valmiera sits in the city centre, close to the Gauja riverbank park that runs through the middle of town. it's a 10-minute walk to the riverside trails and about 5 minutes to the central Rātslaukums square.
The hotel is genuinely family-oriented, which you'll notice in the room layouts and the unpretentious service. Rates of $115-165/night are fair for the comfort level. There's a functional bus and train connection to Riga (about 2 hrs) if you want to combine it with a Riga stay.
