The ferry from La Ceiba to Roatan (Galaxy Wave or MV Utila Princess) runs twice daily and takes about 1.5 hours if conditions are good, tickets around $25-30 each way.
On the mainland, direct buses connect San Pedro Sula to Copan Ruinas in about 3 hours ($5-8). Lago de Yojoa is 1.5 hours from San Pedro Sula or 2 hours from Tegucigalpa along CA-5. Tela is 2 hours from San Pedro Sula with several daily Hedman Alas and Viana Clase Oro departures. Book Hedman Alas at least a day ahead for the intercity routes since they fill up fast on weekends.

This is peak season across all regions. Roatan's West Bay Beach and West End fill up fast from late December through January, and rates at quality properties push toward the top of the $160-480/night range. Semana Santa (Holy Week before Easter) is the single busiest week in Honduras. prices spike 30-50% and every decent property in Copan Ruinas and Tela books solid. Book 10-12 weeks out for anything worth staying in.
Shoulder Season (May, Nov)
May and November are genuinely the smart months to visit. Rates drop 20-35% from peak, and the Caribbean coast is mostly clear. Lago de Yojoa in November is particularly good. the dry season is just starting, temperatures sit around 22-26°C at elevation, and you're unlikely to be competing for rooms. Roatan diving visibility in May is excellent before the summer rains settle in.
Green Season (Jun-Sep)

Semana Santa (the week before Easter) is the biggest domestic travel week in Honduras. Las Glorietas and Hotel Marina Copan both sell out entirely for this period, often 6-8 weeks in advance. Don't assume you'll find something on arrival. Copan Ruinas has limited quality inventory and the overflow ends up in guesthouses near the El Florido border crossing, which is not where you want to be.
Roatan airport taxis: fix the price first
There's no metered taxi service from Juan Manuel Gálvez Airport. Drivers at the exit door quote whatever they think you'll pay. The fair rate to West End is $15-18 and to West Bay is $20-25 for a private taxi. If you're a couple or small group, that's fine. If you're solo, ask the driver at the information desk inside arrivals to call a shared taxi. it typically costs $8-10 to West End.
Get to the Copan ruins before 9am
The Copan Archaeological Site opens at 8am and tour buses from San Pedro Sula and Guatemala start arriving by 10am. Staying in the town center near Parque Central means you can walk to the site entrance in 20 minutes and have the Hieroglyphic Stairway and Principal Group largely to yourself for the first hour. Entry is $15 for the main site, plus $8 for the Las Sepulturas residential zone.
Lago de Yojoa needs a car or driver
The north shore properties around Peña Blanca and CA-5 are spread out along several kilometers of road. There's no reliable local tuk-tuk or taxi service connecting them. Either rent a car in San Pedro Sula before you arrive (budget $35-50/day for a basic 4x4) or arrange a day driver through your hotel, which typically costs $40-60 for a full day including Pulhapanzak Waterfall.
Caribbean coast hotels: always check the exact beach distance
Several properties in Tela and along the north coast advertise 'beachfront' or 'sea view' in ways that are, let's say, optimistic. Check the hotel pin on Google Maps against the coastline before booking. A genuine beachfront property in Tela Bay should be within 50 meters of the water. Anything beyond 300 meters is not beachfront, regardless of what the listing says.
USD works almost everywhere, but carry small bills
Honduras uses the Lempira (HNL), but USD is accepted at essentially every hotel, resort, and tour operator in Roatan, Copan Ruinas, and Tela.
