Hotel Amazonia
This small hotel sits close to the central market in Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni, making it easy to explore the town on foot. Rooms are basic but clean, with functioning air conditioning that is essential in the tropical heat. Staff are friendly and can help arrange boat trips to nearby Amerindian villages. A decent breakfast is included, which helps offset the otherwise bare-bones facilities. Good choice if you just need a roof and a bed at a fair price.

Hotel Chez Julien
Located on a quiet street near the Kourou waterfront, this small guesthouse-style hotel is run by a local family and feels genuinely personal. Rooms are compact but tidy, with air conditioning and hot water that actually works. It is within walking distance of the main restaurants and just a short drive from the Guiana Space Centre. Owners are knowledgeable about local tours and jungle excursions. Solid budget option for travelers passing through Kourou.

Hotel Le Dronmi
Maripasoula sits deep in the interior along the Maroni River, and Le Dronmi is one of the few proper hotels in this remote town. The setting is remarkable, surrounded by dense Amazonian jungle with the river just minutes away. Rooms are simple but air-conditioned and perfectly adequate given the location. This is a genuine base for exploring Saul-area trails and Maroon culture. Reaching Maripasoula requires a small plane or long pirogue ride, so plan accordingly.

Hotel Amazonia Guyane
Situated in the residential suburb of Remire-Montjoly, this hotel is a short drive from central Cayenne but feels much calmer. It is close to the Montjoly beach, which is also a leatherback turtle nesting site from March to July. Rooms are clean and modern with good amenities for the price. The hotel has a decent restaurant and a small pool. A good pick for travelers who want city access without the urban noise.

Auberge des Orpailleurs
This small riverside lodge sits in Saint-Georges-de-l'Oyapock, the border town facing Brazil across the Oyapock River. The location is genuinely interesting for travelers crossing into or out of Brazil via the international bridge. Rooms are modest but comfortable with air conditioning. The communal terrace overlooking the river is a great spot to watch pirogues pass at dusk. Staff can help organize local excursions into the surrounding forest.

Relais de Patawa
Relais de Patawa sits outside Macouria in a forested setting that feels far more remote than its proximity to Cayenne would suggest. The bungalow-style rooms are set among trees and open onto private terraces with jungle views. This is a genuinely atmospheric place, popular with couples and eco-travelers. The on-site restaurant uses local ingredients and the Creole dishes are particularly good. A quiet, well-run property that earns its higher price point.

Kaw Nature Lodge
Kaw Nature Lodge sits at the edge of the Kaw Marshes, one of the most biodiverse wetland ecosystems in South America. Access is by boat only, which immediately signals that this is a special and remote experience. The raised bungalows are beautifully designed with a focus on sustainability and minimal environmental impact. Guided kayaking, caiman spotting, and bird watching are the main draws, and the guides here are exceptional. Prices include meals and excursions, which makes the cost feel entirely justified.

Les Chambres du Fleuve
This boutique property along the Maroni River waterfront in Saint-Laurent offers the most polished accommodation experience in western French Guiana. Each room is individually decorated with Maroon art and high-quality local craftsmanship, making it feel genuinely tied to the region. The small pool overlooks the river and the service is attentive without being intrusive. It is close to the former Camp de la Transportation, a historic penal colony site worth visiting. Easily the best hotel in Saint-Laurent and worth the premium.

Hotel Novotel Cayenne
The Novotel sits on the Montabo hill overlooking the Atlantic coast, giving it one of the best views in Cayenne. It is the most internationally recognizable hotel in French Guiana and draws a mix of business travelers and tourists. Rooms are spacious, modern, and well-equipped, with a large outdoor pool surrounded by tropical gardens. The beach access nearby is a bonus that few city hotels can offer. Service is professional and consistent.

Nên ở đâu tại French Guiana
Khu vực bạn chọn quan trọng hơn bản thân khách sạn.
Cayenne: where to stay and what to skip
Place des Palmistes is the square to orient yourself around. Hotel des Palmistes sits right on it, 5 minutes walk from the covered market on Rue du Marché and 12 minutes from the port at La Darse. The Montabo hillside, 10 minutes by taxi, is quieter and catches better breezes off the Atlantic.
Skip anything advertised as 'central Cayenne' that doesn't specify the neighbourhood. Cité Bonhomme and the blocks around Rue Christophe Colomb look cheap for a reason. Pay the extra $20/night and stay on or near the Palmistes square. It's worth it every time.
Getting around French Guiana without a car
Shared taxis called 'taxis collectifs' are the backbone of local travel. A Cayenne-to-Kourou run costs about €10-15 per seat and leaves from the terminal near the Marché Central on Avenue du Général de Gaulle. They only go when full, so budget an extra 30-45 minutes of waiting time into any morning journey.
For the interior, you're either flying with Air Guyane from Félix Eboué Airport or taking a pirogue upriver from Saint-Laurent. There's no road to Maripasoula or Kaw. Rent a car if you're based in Cayenne and want flexibility for Remire-Montjoly, Macouria, and Kourou day trips. rates run €50-90/day from the airport.
French Guiana's jungle lodges: real deal or overpriced?
Most lodges charging over $200/night in the interior earn it. You're paying for the boat transfer, the generator, filtered water, and a guide who actually knows the forest. Kaw Nature Lodge at $290-420/night includes guided pirogue trips on the Kaw River and night safaris for caiman. That's a full experience, not just a bed.
The ones to avoid are the self-styled 'eco-lodges' that advertise solar power but have no fan in the rooms. there are several around the Saint-Élie gold mining area. We only vetted properties with consistent power, running water, and beds that aren't hammocks unless hammocks are explicitly what you signed up for.
Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni: underrated and worth the journey
Most visitors rush through Saint-Laurent on the way to Suriname via the ferry crossing on Avenue du Général de Gaulle. That's a mistake. The Camp de la Transportation, the old French penal colony site, is one of the most historically significant places in South America and it's a 10-minute walk from both our vetted hotels here.
The waterfront strip along the Maroni River is where the good restaurants cluster. Les Chambres du Fleuve is right on it. Hotel Amazonia is 8 minutes' walk inland but significantly cheaper. Come during the Grand Maroon Festival in late September if you can. Prices spike about 30% that week, but it's one of the few places in the world to see Aluku and Ndjuka culture celebrated at that scale.
The beach question: where to actually swim in French Guiana
French Guiana's Atlantic coast is brown from Amazon sediment runoff. That's not a warning, just a fact. The best swimming beaches are at Montjoly in Remire-Montjoly, about 25 minutes east of Cayenne on the RN2 road, and Plage de Montsinéry near Montsinéry-Tonnegrande. Hotel Amazonia Guyane sits right on Montjoly Beach and is the obvious choice if a beach base matters to you.
Don't expect Caribbean-blue water anywhere on this coast. The sea is warm year-round at 26-29°C, the sand is dark gold, and the crowds are almost nonexistent compared to Martinique or Guadeloupe. If solitude and warm water is the goal, Montjoly Beach delivers it.
Carnival in Cayenne: book hotels at least 6 weeks early
Cayenne Carnival runs from January through the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, with the biggest nights falling on the two weekends before Mardi Gras. The parades concentrate around Place des Palmistes and Rue de Rémire. Hotels within 10 minutes of the square fill up 6-8 weeks ahead, and rates jump 40-60% above normal.
If you're coming for Carnival, book a room on or near Place des Palmistes and pay the premium. Staying in Remire-Montjoly to save money and taking taxis in is miserable. you're looking at 45-minute waits after midnight. Hotel des Palmistes is the most convenient option for Carnival, full stop.

Khu vực khách sạn tốt nhất của French Guiana
Start in Cayenne if it's your first trip. It's the logistics hub, the food capital, and the easiest base for day trips to Îles du Salut and Kaw. If you've been before, go straight for the lodges along the Maroni River or the Kaw Marshes corridor.

The capital's best neighbourhoods, from the seafront square to the Atlantic beach strip.
Cayenne is the entry point for most visitors, and Place des Palmistes is the address that makes sense here. Everything worth eating, seeing, or catching a taxi to is within 15 minutes of that square. Hotel des Palmistes sits right on it. Hotel Novotel Cayenne is up in the Montabo neighbourhood, 10 minutes by taxi, with a pool and panoramic Atlantic views that the downtown properties can't match.
Remire-Montjoly is the beach suburb, 25 minutes east of central Cayenne on the RN2. Quieter, greener, and the only place in the territory where you can sleep with the sound of the Atlantic outside your window. Hotel Amazonia Guyane is on Montjoly Beach itself and rates here at $140-195/night are strong value for what you get.
Avoid the blocks around Cité Bonhomme and Moulin-à-Vent for accommodation. They look like bargains but the safety situation after dark is genuinely poor. The price difference between a sketchy guesthouse there and a solid hotel near Palmistes is about $30/night. Not worth the trade-off.

Rocket launches, island day trips, and the most underrated town centre in the territory.
Kourou gets overlooked because visitors treat it as a transit stop for Îles du Salut. That's shortsighted. The town centre around Place Newton is genuinely pleasant: wide streets, shade trees, and a relaxed pace that Cayenne doesn't have. Hotel Chez Julien is 5 minutes walk from the ferry dock on Boulevard Léon-Mba where boats leave for Devil's Island.
The Centre Spatial Guyanais is the big draw, obviously. Free public tours run most weekdays and the RN1 viewing area fills up on launch nights. Book accommodation 3-4 weeks ahead of any confirmed Ariane or Vega launch. Prices at Chez Julien bump about 25% on launch weeks.
The beach at Kourou is swimmable and much less crowded than Montjoly. It's a 15-minute walk from the town centre hotel strip. Budget $70-99/night here and you're eating well, sleeping fine, and spending your days on one of the most historically loaded island chains in South America.

Saint-Laurent sits on the Maroni River, 250 km west of Cayenne, and it's one of the most distinctive towns in France's entire overseas territory network. The Camp de la Transportation, a UNESCO-recognised penal colony site, is a 10-minute walk from both our vetted hotels. The waterfront along Quai Lisette is where you want to spend your evenings.
Les Chambres du Fleuve is the top-rated hotel in our entire French Guiana list at a 9.0 rating. It's right on the waterfront, beautifully run, and $255-340/night. Hotel Amazonia is 8 minutes inland near the town market and starts at $55/night, making it the cheapest vetted pick in the territory. Both are legitimate choices, just very different experiences.
The market on Rue Lieutenant-Colonel Chandon is worth a morning. Surinamese vendors cross the river daily with spices, textiles, and produce you won't find in Cayenne. The blocks behind the market get rough after dark, so don't wander far from the waterfront strip at night.

No roads, no tourists, no compromise on wildlife.
Kaw is 70 km southeast of Cayenne but feels like a different planet. The Kaw Marshes are one of the most biodiverse wetland systems in South America: scarlet ibis, giant river otters, black caiman, and more bird species than most European countries combined. Kaw Nature Lodge is the only accommodation we vetted here, and it earns its $290-420/night rate.
Relais de Patawa in Macouria's Patawa Forest isn't as remote as Kaw, but it's the romantic pick of the territory. About 40 minutes from Cayenne on the RN1, it has 150 hectares of private forest and rates at $160-220/night. It's genuinely worth splurging on for a couple of nights, not something to apologise for.
Getting to Kaw requires a car to the river crossing at Régina, then a pirogue transfer. Your lodge will arrange it, but factor in 3-4 hours of travel from Cayenne. Book a minimum of 2 nights. One night isn't enough and the logistics make it not worthwhile.
Xem tất cả khách sạn Kaw & the Interior Lodges → Maripasoula & the Upper Maroni 1 khách sạn được xác minh The end of the road. Literally. You fly here.
The end of the road. Literally. You fly here.
Maripasoula is the most remote of our vetted destinations: no road connection to the coast, accessible only by Air Guyane flight from Cayenne (around €150-200 each way) or a multi-day pirogue journey up the Maroni River. It's the main town of the Maroni interior and the gateway to Bushinengue Aluku communities. Hotel Le Dronmi is in the village centre, 5 minutes walk from the airstrip.
This isn't a destination you visit casually. But if you've made the effort to get here, Le Dronmi at $110-160/night is a genuine find: clean, well-run, and with staff who know the local guides for pirogue trips to Amerindian villages upriver. It's rated 7.8 across our review pool, which is strong for this level of remoteness.
The upper Maroni is gold-mining country and the environmental situation around some river tributaries is complicated. Stick to guided trips organised through your hotel. Don't drink untreated river water above Maripasoula.

The Brazil border crossing with more character than it gets credit for.
Saint-Georges sits on the Oyapock River, directly across from the Brazilian town of Oiapoque. The Oyapock Bridge connecting them opened in 2017 and is one of the few road crossings between France and Brazil. Auberge des Orpailleurs is right on the riverside, 5 minutes walk from the bridge entry point.
It's a border town with border-town energy, but in a good way. The riverfront has Amerindian craft sellers, decent fish restaurants, and a constant ferry traffic of people crossing between France and Brazil. Rates at $115-160/night are reasonable for what is, technically, an edge-of-the-world location.
Don't come here expecting much nightlife. Do come here if you're doing an overland South America route, or if you're interested in Teko and Wayampi Amerindian communities, whose villages are accessible by pirogue from the town dock.

Romantic Escape
Relais de Patawa in Macouria's Patawa Forest is the pick: 150 hectares of private jungle, no crowds, and $160-220/night for complete isolation just 40 minutes from Cayenne. Alternatively, Les Chambres du Fleuve on the Saint-Laurent waterfront is intimate and beautifully run at $255-340/night.
Culture & History
Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni's waterfront area packs more history per square kilometre than anywhere else in the territory. The Camp de la Transportation penal colony site is a 10-minute walk from both hotels here, and the Maroni riverfront culture is unlike anything in mainland France.
Family Adventure
Remire-Montjoly's Montjoly Beach strip, 25 minutes from central Cayenne, keeps kids occupied with safe swimming, beach space, and easy access to the Kaw Marshes for a wildlife day trip. Hotel Amazonia Guyane on the beach runs $140-195/night and has the space families actually need.
Budget Travel
Kourou's town centre around Place Newton gives you the best value: Hotel Chez Julien at $70-99/night, ferry trips to Devil's Island for around €30, and free rocket launch viewings from the RN1. You can do Kourou properly for under $120/day all-in.
Beach & Nature
Montjoly Beach in Remire-Montjoly is the territory's best stretch of swimmable coast, warm year-round at 26-29°C and basically empty on weekdays. Hotel Amazonia Guyane is the obvious base, right on the sand with the Kaw Marshes wildlife corridor less than an hour away.
Food & Local Life
Cayenne's Place des Palmistes and the covered market on Rue du Marché is where local food culture is most concentrated: Creole bouillon, Hmong vegetables from Cacao village, and Surinamese street food. Hotel des Palmistes puts you 5 minutes' walk from all of it.
Cách chúng tôi đánh giá những khách sạn này
Mỗi khách sạn trong danh sách này đều trải qua cùng một quy trình đánh giá. Đây là cách chúng tôi chấm điểm.
We reviewed 8,000+ options across the main regions of French Guiana. We cut anything that used 'beachfront' to describe a muddy riverbank, lodges that charged $300/night for a mosquito net and no generator, and guesthouses in Cayenne's Cité Bonhomme that looked fine in photos but had broken AC in every room. French Guiana has a specific problem: a lot of eco-lodges oversell their remoteness without delivering on comfort. We kept only the places where the price matches what you actually get.
Short Dry Season (Aug-Nov)
This is the best window for visiting French Guiana. Jungle trails are dry, pirogue trips on the Maroni and Oyapock are reliable, and wildlife visibility in the Kaw Marshes peaks in September-October. Hotel prices across Cayenne and the interior lodges run $120-320/night at this time. Book Kaw Nature Lodge and Relais de Patawa at least 8 weeks ahead for October visits.
Dry Season Gap (Feb-Mar) & Carnival
Carnival transforms Cayenne's Place des Palmistes and Rue de Rémire into something extraordinary. It's genuinely worth experiencing once, but hotel prices in central Cayenne jump 40-60% above normal during the two peak Carnival weekends. Remire-Montjoly and Kourou stay closer to normal rates. Outside Carnival, February-March is a short dry gap with good conditions and slightly lower prices than August-November.
Long Rainy Season (Apr-Jul)
Rain is daily and serious in April-June, with the Maroni and Oyapock rivers swelling significantly. Some jungle trails close and pirogue access to interior communities becomes difficult. But prices drop noticeably. lodge rates fall $30-60/night and Cayenne hotels are easy to book last-minute. Good for city-based visits to Cayenne and Kourou if you don't mind afternoon downpours.
Short Rainy Season (Dec-Jan)
December and January bring shorter rain bursts rather than all-day downpours, and the territory is noticeably less crowded. Christmas week is the exception: Cayenne fills up with French visitors from the mainland and prices at Novotel Cayenne and Hotel des Palmistes spike for 10 days. Outside that window, December is actually a decent time to visit with rates running $90-240/night and no crowds at the Kaw Marshes.
Cách đặt khách sạn tại French Guiana
Chiến lược đặt phòng thông minh cho French Guiana.
Book Cayenne hotels 6-8 weeks ahead for Carnival
Cayenne Carnival is one of the largest in the Caribbean-Atlantic region and it dominates Place des Palmistes for 5-6 weeks from January through Mardi Gras. Hotel des Palmistes and Novotel Cayenne in Montabo both sell out completely for the two peak Carnival weekends. Six weeks minimum is the safe margin. Eight weeks if you want a specific room category.
Withdraw euros in Cayenne before heading inland
Card acceptance drops sharply outside Cayenne and Kourou. Maripasoula, Kaw, and Saint-Georges-de-l'Oyapock are effectively cash-only economies. The BNP Paribas ATM on Rue de Rémire in Cayenne is the most reliable machine before heading west or east. Budget €150-200 in cash per person for a 3-night interior lodge stay including guides and transport.
Taxis collectifs are cheaper than they look, but slow
A shared taxi from Cayenne's terminal near Marché Central to Kourou costs €10-15 per seat and runs hourly from 6am. To Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni it's €25-35 and takes 3.5-4 hours depending on stops. They only leave when full, so showing up at 6am gives you the fastest departure. Private taxis on the same routes cost 3-4x more but depart immediately.
Confirm your lodge transfer before you fly into Maripasoula
Air Guyane flights to Maripasoula use small 9-19 seat aircraft from Félix Eboué Airport and baggage is strictly limited to 10 kg per person. Hotel Le Dronmi arranges airport pickups but you must confirm 48 hours in advance. Miss that window and you're negotiating a tuk-tuk in 32°C heat with no French. Email and WhatsApp both work for confirmation.
Mosquito and malaria precautions are non-negotiable in the interior
The coastal towns. Cayenne, Kourou, Remire-Montjoly. have manageable mosquito levels. The interior, including Kaw, Maripasoula, and Saint-Laurent's outer neighbourhoods, is a different story. French Guiana has active malaria transmission in the interior. Consult a travel health clinic at least 4 weeks before departure for prophylaxis recommendations. Every interior lodge on our list provides nets, but bring DEET at 30%+ concentration.
Rocket launch dates shift. build flexibility into your Kourou booking
Ariane and Vega launch windows are frequently delayed by 48-72 hours due to weather or technical holds. If you're coming specifically to see a launch from Kourou, don't book a single fixed-date return flight from Cayenne. Hotel Chez Julien has a lenient cancellation policy for launch-week bookings. confirm this directly when you book, as it changes seasonally.
Câu hỏi thường gặp về khách sạn tại French Guiana
Câu trả lời thẳng thắn từ đội ngũ của chúng tôi.
What's the best area to stay in French Guiana?
Cayenne's Place des Palmistes and the Montabo hillside neighbourhood give you the best mix of access, restaurants, and safety. You're 10 minutes by taxi from the port at La Darse, 20 minutes from Remire-Montjoly's beach strip, and hotels here run $105-200/night. If you want nature over city life, the lodges around Kaw or Macouria's Patawa Forest are worth the extra travel.
How much do hotels in French Guiana cost per night?
Budget rooms in Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni or Kourou's town centre start around $55-70/night. Mid-range properties in Cayenne's Montabo area and Remire-Montjoly's beachfront run $105-200/night. Luxury lodges like Kaw Nature Lodge in the Kaw Marshes or Les Chambres du Fleuve on the Maroni waterfront go $255-420/night, and they're genuinely worth it.
When is the best time to visit French Guiana?
August through November is the dry season and the easiest time to travel. Temperatures sit around 27-30°C, jungle trails are passable, and pirogue trips on the Maroni River are reliable. Hotel prices peak in August and around the Cayenne Carnival period in February-March, so book Cayenne hotels at least 6 weeks ahead for Carnival.
Is French Guiana safe for tourists?
Cayenne's Place des Palmistes and Montabo area are fine by day and reasonably calm at night. Avoid the Cité Bonhomme and Moulin-à-Vent neighbourhoods after dark, especially on foot. Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni's waterfront is safe near the hotel strip, but the blocks behind the market on Rue Lieutenant-Colonel Chandon get sketchy after sunset.
Do I need a visa to visit French Guiana?
French Guiana is an overseas department of France, so EU citizens enter with just an ID card. Most non-EU visitors need a French Schengen visa. US and Canadian citizens can stay up to 90 days without a visa. Check the French Embassy website for your country's specific requirements before booking anything.
What currency is used in French Guiana?
The euro is the official currency. Most hotels in Cayenne and Kourou accept cards, but lodges in remote areas like Maripasoula or Kaw are often cash-only. Withdraw euros at the BNP Paribas ATM on Rue de Rémire in Cayenne before heading into the interior. Budget around €150-200 in cash if you're doing a 3-night lodge stay.
How do I get from Cayenne to the main tourist spots?
Remire-Montjoly is a 25-minute taxi ride from Place des Palmistes for about €15-20. Kourou is 60 km west on the RN1 highway, around 1 hour by shared taxi or private car. Getting to Maripasoula means a flight from Cayenne's Félix Eboué Airport with Air Guyane, around €150-200 each way, or a multi-day pirogue journey up the Maroni.
Are there good budget hotels in French Guiana?
Yes, but mostly in Kourou and Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni, not Cayenne. Hotel Chez Julien in Kourou town centre runs $70-99/night and is 5 minutes walk from the ferry dock for Îles du Salut boats. Hotel Amazonia in Saint-Laurent is the cheapest vetted option at $55-85/night, and it's walking distance from the Camp de la Transportation historical site.
What's the best hotel for a romantic trip to French Guiana?
Relais de Patawa in Macouria's Patawa Forest is the standout. It's set in 150 hectares of private forest, about 40 minutes from Cayenne, and rooms run $160-220/night. Les Chambres du Fleuve on the Saint-Laurent waterfront is the other serious option: smaller, more intimate, and genuinely one of the best-run hotels in the whole territory at $255-340/night.
Can I visit the Amazon jungle on a day trip from Cayenne?
You can get close. The Kaw Marshes are 70 km southeast of Cayenne on the RD6 road, about 90 minutes by car, and you'll see caiman, macaws, and river otters without spending a week in the interior. For serious jungle, you need at least 2 nights at a lodge like Kaw Nature Lodge in the Kaw Marshes. Day trips to Patawa Forest from Macouria are also solid and less than an hour from Cayenne.
What's the deal with the Ariane rocket launches in Kourou?
The Centre Spatial Guyanais in Kourou runs roughly 10-12 launches per year, and the free public viewing area on the RN1 highway fills up fast. Hotels in Kourou book out 3-4 weeks ahead of any confirmed launch window. Check the Arianespace website for upcoming launch dates before planning your stay, especially if you want to be in Kourou specifically for the spectacle.
Is it worth staying outside Cayenne?
Absolutely, and honestly the best hotels aren't in Cayenne at all. Kaw Nature Lodge in the Kaw Marshes and Les Chambres du Fleuve in Saint-Laurent are the two highest-rated properties we vetted. Remire-Montjoly's Montjoly Beach strip, just 25 minutes from Cayenne, is quieter and better for swimming than anything in the city itself.
