All-inclusive vs. room-only: how to actually decide
All-inclusive makes sense if you drink 4-5 cocktails daily, eat 3 meals at the resort, and use the beach and pool all day. At Iberostar Tainos ($160-230/night), the all-in value works out if you don't leave the resort much.
Room-only at Hotel Dos Mares ($105-145) leaves you free to eat at paladares in Varadero town, hire a local guide for $25, and spend evenings in actual bars rather than resort entertainment. More work but more rewarding.
How to pick your position on the peninsula
The peninsula tip (east end) has the best hotels and beach: widest sand, clearest water, least crowded. Melia Varadero and Gran Muthu are both here. You'll need a taxi or the hop-on-hop-off bus to reach Varadero town.
Mid-strip (Barcelo, Iberostar zone) balances beach quality and nightlife access. Close enough to walk or taxi to town for dinner. Most travelers do fine in this zone.
