Book inside the old town walls. Seriously. The UNESCO core along Siroka, Latranska, and the streets around Namesti Svornosti puts you within 8 minutes walk of everything worth seeing, and the difference between a hotel inside the walls versus 2km outside is enormous in a town this size.
Get to the castle early. The gates open at 9am and the first tour slot at 9:15am is a different experience from the 1pm chaos. Most day-trippers from Prague don't arrive until 10:30am. You'll have the second courtyard almost to yourself if you move fast. And don't skip the Baroque Theatre. it's one of the best-preserved in Europe and most people walk straight past the entrance on the third courtyard level.
How to pick the right neighborhood for your stay
Old Town is the obvious choice and for good reason. Namesti Svornosti is the heart of it, with Lazebnicky Bridge a 3-minute walk toward the castle and the Egon Schiele Art Centrum another 5 minutes toward Siroka. If you want to be in the middle of everything and don't mind the summer foot traffic, Old Town hotels are worth the premium.
Castle Hill suits you if you prioritize views over convenience. Hotel Bellevue sits above the town with direct sightlines to the castle towers, but you're looking at a 10-12 minute walk downhill to Old Town restaurants. Latran is the compromise: still inside the UNESCO zone, less crowded than Old Town, and 5-8 minutes to both the castle gate and Namesti Svornosti.
The honest guide to Cesky Krumlov hotel pricing
Budget means $45-75/night and gets you a clean bed in a hostel or basic pension. Mid-range from $100-185/night covers well-reviewed guesthouses and boutique hotels in Old Town with real breakfasts and helpful owners. Luxury starts at $200/night and peaks around $420/night for a castle-view apartment on Horni Street with period furniture and a bottle of Moravian wine on arrival.
One thing we see constantly: people overpaying for 'castle view' rooms that actually face a side street or an inner courtyard. Always ask the property to confirm the exact view before booking. The price difference between a genuine Vltava-facing room and an interior courtyard room at the same hotel can be $40-60/night, and only one of them is worth it.
When to visit Cesky Krumlov (and when to skip it)
Late May and September are the sweet spots. Temperatures sit around 18-22°C, crowds drop to manageable levels after the school-holiday peak, and hotel prices in Old Town run $80-160/night instead of the $130-220 you'll pay in July. The Five-Petalled Rose Festival in mid-June is spectacular but adds 25-30% to room rates for that weekend.
Avoid the last two weeks of July if you dislike crowds. The International Music Festival plus peak Czech summer holidays turn Namesti Svornosti into a bottleneck from 11am to 6pm. If you must come in July, book a hotel with a private courtyard or garden. Hotel Ruze on Horni Street and Pension Na louzi both have quiet outdoor spaces that offer a genuine escape from the street-level chaos.
What to eat and drink near your hotel
The best dinner street in town is Siroka. Krcma v Satlavske ulici on Satlavska does medieval-style Czech feasts that are genuinely fun and not just a tourist gimmick. For something quieter, Laibon on Parkanova is a vegetarian restaurant in a 15th-century building, 4 minutes walk from most Old Town hotels. Avoid the first row of restaurants on Namesti Svornosti. they're overpriced and know it.
