Avatoru Village is where everything connects. The airport is 5 minutes away, dive shops line the main road, and Avatoru Pass. the world-class drift dive. is right there. You won't need a boat taxi every time you want dinner.
The strip between the airport and Avatoru Pass is the sweet spot: hotels here sit close to the lagoon shore, restaurants are walkable, and the Vin de Tahiti winery is a 10-minute stroll west. First timers who book a remote motu before seeing the lagoon often wish they'd started central. Do Avatoru first, then treat yourself to a motu later in the trip.
The private motu experience: what you actually get
A private motu means total isolation. No road, no village, no noise except the reef. Both Ninamu Resort and Blue Lagoon Rangiroa sit on outer motus you reach by a 20-45 minute boat transfer from Avatoru. That transfer happens on a schedule, not on demand. factor that in.
The upside is real. You get house reef snorkeling steps from your bungalow, no day-tour crowds, and the kind of silence that doesn't exist anywhere in Avatoru Village. At $280-580/night you're paying for the exclusivity, not just the room. It's worth it for a honeymoon or a milestone. Less so for a week-long dive trip where you're in the water anyway.
Diving in Rangiroa: which pass and which side
Tiputa Pass is the showstopper. Hammerheads, dolphins, eagle rays, grey reef sharks. all visible on a single drift if the timing's right. Dawn dives here are non-negotiable. The current runs hard and fast, so complete beginners should start with Avatoru Pass first, which is gentler and a 10-minute boat ride from most Avatoru hotels.
Book Six Passengers Dive Center or Rangiroa Plongée before you arrive. Both operate out of Avatoru and run 2-tank morning trips starting around 7 AM. In July and August, spots fill 2-3 weeks out. Don't assume you'll sort it on arrival.
Rangiroa on a budget: what's realistic
You can do Rangiroa on $100-130/day total if you're disciplined. Stay at Rangiroa Beach Club ($55-85/night) in Avatoru Village, rent a scooter for $35/day, and eat at the small local snack bars near the Avatoru ferry dock rather than hotel restaurants. The lagoon is free.

Tiputa: the village most visitors skip
Tiputa Village sits on the eastern motu, a 5-minute boat ride from Avatoru across Tiputa Pass. Most day visitors never cross. That's a mistake. The village has a quieter, genuinely local feel that Avatoru's main tourist strip has lost, and the dolphin pod that rides the Tiputa Pass current shows up almost every morning around sunrise.
Pension Glorine is the best base here at $70-99/night, and Pension Henriette in Tiputa Village Center is the family option at $120-170/night. Eat at the small fare near the Tiputa dock. no signage, cash only, opens at noon. The boat taxi back to Avatoru runs until about 9 PM; after that you're committed for the night.
