Town Center is your base. It puts you within walking distance of the Svaneti Museum of History and Ethnography, the iconic Svan towers in the Old Quarter, and the main trailheads for Chalaadi Glacier. Everything else. ski shuttles, marshrutka stops, local restaurants. runs through the central square.
Book half-board at your guesthouse if you can. Dining options outside of the Town Center area are limited, and Georgian home cooking in Mestia, think kubdari (Svan meat bread) and chvishtari, is genuinely one of the highlights of the trip. Don't sleep on it.
Mestia for hikers: where to stay
The Chalaadi Glacier trailhead is about 8 km from the central square, so your hotel location matters less for day hikes than you'd think. That said, Riverside hotels like Hotel Medina give you the easiest morning start toward the Enguri River valley trails, and the views from your room are half the experience.
For the Koruldi Lakes hike, plan for 6-8 hours round trip and bring layers. Even in July, temperatures up there drop to 5-8°C. Ushba Hotel in East Mestia actually sits closest to several eastern trailheads and has a gear storage room, which is a small but real advantage.
Mestia for skiers: the honest breakdown
Hatsvali Ski Resort is 8 km from Mestia's central square. Tetnuldi is further, about 17 km. Most hotels offer or can arrange shuttle transfers, but confirm this before booking. especially for Tetnuldi. Chalet Mestia on the Ski Area Approach is the only hotel in our list with ski-in proximity, and it justifies the $180-240/night price tag during peak ski weeks.
January and February get heavy snowfall at elevation, with base temperatures around -5 to -10°C. Book accommodation by late November for December-January stays. Weekday rates at most Mestia hotels drop 15-25% compared to weekends during ski season.
Budget travel in Mestia: it's very doable
You can stay comfortably in Mestia for $45-70/night with breakfast included. Guesthouse Nino in Town Center and Guesthouse Lali in Lanchvali District are both solid, clean, and run by local families who actually know the trails. This is not the destination where budget means bad.
Marshrutkas from Zugdidi to Mestia cost around $6-8 and take 3-4 hours on a mountain road. That's the budget move. The Vanilla Sky flight is faster but costs $50-80 one way. If you're watching spending, the bus is fine. just sit on the right side for the mountain views.
Mestia's Old Quarter: worth the premium?
Yes. The Old Quarter is built around the original Svan defensive towers, and waking up inside that landscape is different from looking at it from Town Center. Tower House Svaneti sits inside a restored tower complex and is genuinely one of the most distinctive hotel stays in the Caucasus. You're paying $290-420/night, but it's not just a room.
The Old Quarter is roughly 10 minutes walk from the central square, which is fine during summer. In winter, that uphill walk on icy cobblestones is a different story. Go in summer or early autumn for the best experience.
Mestia for couples: the right hotels
Svaneti Lodge in the North Quarter leads our romantic category for good reason. It's quieter than Town Center, views of the Caucasus range are unobstructed, and the lodge has a fireplace atmosphere that works well in autumn. Letiani Hotel in Upper Town runs a close second with panoramic ridge views you'll want to photograph at dawn.
Avoid booking a 'romantic' trip in peak July without reservations locked in 6-8 weeks out. Mestia's top properties sell out fast during trekking season, and the fallback options in East Mestia or near the airport don't deliver the same atmosphere.

Hotel Mestia and Betlem Art Hotel both sit here, covering the mid-range and luxury ends. Guesthouse Nino gives you the budget option without sacrificing location. Three very different price points, all within 10 minutes walk of each other.
Avoid the side streets east of the museum in the late evening, not because they're dangerous but because lighting is poor and the roads are uneven. Stick to the main square area and you're fine.

This is the most atmospheric part of Mestia. The Svan towers are not decorative. they're medieval defensive structures that define the skyline, and Tower House Svaneti is literally built into one. Upper Town sits on the ridge above, giving Letiani Hotel its panoramic Caucasus views.
You're 10-15 minutes uphill walk from the central square, which matters in winter when the cobblestone paths ice over. Summer and autumn are the ideal seasons for this area. The extra effort is paid back in atmosphere you won't find in Town Center.
Prices here run $110-420/night. It's a wide range because the neighborhood has both boutique-luxury and solid mid-range options. Neither is a bad choice. But Tower House specifically is worth saving up for.
