Parque Central: the heart of it all
Everything in Antigua radiates from Parque Central. The cathedral is right there. So is the Palacio de los Capitanes Generales, the fountain, and the best people-watching in the country. Hotels on this block charge a premium. $105-220/night. but you're paying for zero commute to the best of the city.
Book a room with a street-facing view if you can. The courtyard-facing rooms are quieter but you lose the atmosphere. And skip dinner at the hotel: walk two blocks to 6a Avenida Norte where you'll find better food at half the price.
Semana Santa: what nobody tells you
Holy Week in Antigua is one of the most extraordinary things you'll see in Latin America. Alfombras (elaborate street carpets made of colored sawdust and flowers) line the processional routes from the Cathedral down to Iglesia San Francisco on 7a Calle Oriente. It's genuinely stunning. It's also absolute chaos.
Hotel prices triple. Streets close. Tuk-tuks get stuck. Book at least 3 months out, pay the higher rate without complaining, and stay within walking distance of the main procession routes. It's worth every extra quetzal.
How to pick the right price tier
Under $100/night: you're at Black Cat Hostel or Hotel San Francisco near Iglesia San Francisco. Both are solid. Don't expect spa robes. $100-200/night: this is the sweet spot in Antigua. Hotel Casa del Parque, Posada del Angel, and Hotel Meson de Maria near Arco de Santa Catalina all deliver real comfort with colonial character.
Above $250/night: you're at Casa Santo Domingo or Camino Real Antigua in Las Gravileas. These aren't just hotels. They're destinations. If you can afford it, spend at least 2 nights. you won't want to leave.
Getting around: tuk-tuks, shuttles, and walking
Inside Antigua's historic center, walk. The grid is compact and most attractions are within 15 minutes of Parque Central. For trips to nearby towns like San Juan del Obispo or Santa María de Jesús, tuk-tuks charge Q20-40 depending on distance. Always agree on the price before you get in.
Shuttles to Guatemala City's Aeropuerto La Aurora run from most hotels and cost $10-15 per person. They're reliable and comfortable. Avoid booking last-minute shuttles at the bus terminal on Alameda Santa Lucia. the unofficial operators there will add 'fees' that don't exist.
Where to eat near your hotel
The best food in Antigua isn't in hotel restaurants. Head to 6a Avenida Norte for upscale Guatemalan and international spots. For cheaper local food, the Mercado de Artesanías area near 4a Calle Poniente has stalls serving pepián and jocon from Q30-50 a plate. that's roughly $4-6.
Café No Sé on 1a Avenida Sur is the expat institution for late nights. Fridas on 5a Avenida Norte is the one everyone recommends. Trust both recommendations. And if you're staying near Iglesia San Francisco, the tienda on 7a Calle Oriente sells the best pan dulce in the neighborhood at 6am.

This is ground zero. The Cathedral, the Palacio de los Capitanes Generales, and the famous Arco de Santa Catalina on 5a Avenida Norte are all within a 6-minute walk of any hotel here. You pay for that convenience, but in a city this walkable, it's worth it.
Hotel Casa del Parque sits literally on the park. Hotel Meson de Maria is one block from the Arco. Hotel Sor Juana de la Cruz is just south of the plaza on 6a Calle Poniente. Three very different price points, all excellent locations.
Noise is the one caveat. Church bells start at 6am and market activity on 4a Avenida Norte picks up by 7. If you're a light sleeper, ask for a courtyard-facing room. Every hotel here has them.

Camino Real Antigua is out in Las Gravileas, about 15 minutes by tuk-tuk from Parque Central. It's not a walkable location and that's fine. it's a resort. You come here for the pool, the spa, and the unobstructed views of Volcán Agua.
Rates at $320-500/night put it at the top of our price range. But the property is large enough that it never feels crowded, and the breakfast spread alone justifies lingering until checkout. Shuttle service to the city center is included.
This option makes most sense for travelers who want Antigua as a base but aren't planning to wander every cobblestone. Good for families, business travelers, and anyone who's already done the city before.
