West Bay vs. West End: Which side should you pick?
West Bay Beach is postcard-perfect. The water is calm, the sand is soft, and you can snorkel directly off the beach without renting anything. Hotels here like Infinity Bay Spa and Beach Resort run $195-249/night, and almost everything faces the water.
West End Village is the social hub. Main Street has local dive shops, cheaper restaurants, and a genuine neighborhood feel around Half Moon Bay that West Bay simply doesn't have. The water taxi between the two runs every 20-30 minutes and costs $3 each way, so staying in West End and visiting West Bay for the beach is a totally valid strategy that saves you $40-60/night.
How to base yourself for diving in Roatan
If diving is the main event, you want to stay where your dive operation is. CoCo View Resort in Brick Bay has its own house reef. you walk off the dock and you're in open water. Turquoise Bay Resort at Camp Bay on the East End sits above a reef that sees a fraction of the traffic the West End sites get. Both are worth the extra transfer time from the airport.
West End has good diving too. Blue Channel and the sites around Half Moon Bay are solid. but the boats can get crowded in peak season. If you're booking 10+ dives, the dedicated dive resorts at French Harbour and Camp Bay give you better reef access, smaller groups, and package deals starting around $175/night that include unlimited shore diving.
Getting around Roatan without spending a fortune
The collectivo system on CA-38 is your best friend. These shared taxis run constantly between Coxen Hole and West End for $2-3 per person and stop anywhere along the main road. A private taxi covers the same route for $15-20. For the East End. Camp Bay, Port Royal, Punta Gorda. you'll need a private car or scooter rental. No collectivos run out that far regularly.
Scooter rentals from West End Village run $35-50/day. That unlocks French Harbour's fish market, the Carambola Gardens in Sandy Bay, and the quieter beaches along the south shore. Avoid renting anything larger than a scooter unless you're confident driving on narrow, unmarked roads. the eastern half of the island has zero signage past Jonesville.
